This is an argument (and a very nice simple retort frankly) that I hear often, but in reality it does not hold water. What humans do is nothing like the symbiosis achieved by the rest of the world's organisms... in the natural world when something is created is becomes a resource for those who would exploit it. What you are arguing is very true in nature - the system adjusts to accept new variables. What humans are doing would probably elicit such a response from the natural world if we weren't destroying all natural space and doing this all in don't act the way humans do (sure they 'adapt' to their environment, and to some degree adapt the environment to themselves) but they do NOT create the overwhelming levels of everything we do (and I wont bother listing all the pollutants we release into the world). Will the result of our efforts be a world with a 80cm ozone layer vs a 100cm ozone layer? Also, the article dosnt say but what 'creates' ozone? (thought it had to do with upper atmosphere & lightning) Also, will the resulting 80cm ozone layer not result in a weakening of the overall ozone protection and thus an actual increase in UV illness worldwide? PocketLinux currently runs on Casio's E100, Compaq's iPaq & the VTech Helio. I think the 'real future' of pocket PC's, and if success for Linux will play out in this space is if a 'distro' is developed that is not to closely tied to one device - why not use Linux as the operating system to move the Handheld PC market away from the 'Apple' desktop idea to the 'IBM Clone' idea - where people install whatever (PocketLinux) OS on their current INSERT YOUR PDA HERE?
Have a look at all the PDA's that were @ Comdex 2000 - here at PDABuzz Look at all those beauty little PDAs, the question is are these obscure electronics companies from Asia going to build and 'market' a completely new OS for each of these devices? -OR- Would they be better off selling the device like a standard PC, with the attitude that users can find a OS to run on it. Wouldnt you rather buy a handheld for its hardware (the reason I bought the E100 10 months ago) or would you rather be forced to buy a OS/Hardware combo - where buying one may force you to compromise on the other.
Casio's E100 is a far better piece of hardware than anything fielded by Palm (even today - only advantage palm may have is size.. but its not that great an issue)
Palm's are small but their capabilities, speed, screens, audio(?) are less than optimal.
What I want is the PalmComputer market to move in the direction of the PC market - that way we can have our cake (hardware) and eat it too (PocketLinux).
What I would like to see: Both Palm and PocketPC get caught with their pants down (ala Apple in the 80s) while each of these "I have a wonder Palm PC but no 'marketing' or 'OS' to sell with it" (ala IBM Clone shops in the 80s) brings their product to market and aids Transvirtual in building PocketLinux. This basic change is bound to occur in the handheld space - Ill bet PocketLinux makes it happen...

What I would like to see: Both Palm and PocketPC get caught with their pants down (ala Apple in the 80s) while each of these "I have a wonder Palm PC but no 'marketing' or 'OS' to sell with it" (ala IBM Clone shops in the 80s) brings their product to market and aids Transvirtual in building PocketLinux. This basic change is bound to occur in the handheld space - Ill bet PocketLinux makes it happen...

Ive often indulged myself in several whims of fancy similar to your zombie idea:
Ive thought that it would be possible that the whole of my perceived world is a construct to give me 'consciences ness'. The planet, the universe, the people around me, everything I 'perceive' could be artificial - that I alone possess conscience and that nothing I 'do' actually has any affect on the world around me (ala matrix i suppose.. but I swear I have been thinking/talking about this before I saw the movie.. really..). Ive often thought that I could very well be a computer program, running in some alien CompSci lab somewhere - how would I know the difference? How does my present existence differ from what we all imagine will be the 'life' of future AI written by humans? This has often been the topic of my giving myself a 'think headache' (Ive also called them brain orgasms...)
