I need people who are not afraid of challenging the software industry whole. Where there is no division between proprietary and open source development, but only the support for following through with the fundamental goal of the act of programming to the point of making it easy and common for the everyday user to program as commonly as they use a calculator.
Now what sort of argument would terrorist come up with, so to promote a following and motivate some to self destruct in performing acts of terrorism, that would be effective against genuine efforts to improve the livings conditions the six billion + people of the world, including them?
Know anyone who wants to stop a good them for themselves?
Consumers do a lot that is good for business, that business doesn't have to pay for but have been complaining about. P2P, genuinely fair use copyright (Some recent/. article on how fair use does a lot of good at stimulating teh economy....and even matters regarding the fraud of software patents (IBM the largest software Patent Holder have been releasing their patents to open source and others are beginning to follow.)
There was a time in this country (USA) where the people got together and created the country because it knew better how to do it. Perhaps we are starting to get back to the basics here. If this sort of direction continues what might the world look like tomorrow?
Clearly there is a lot the consumers do that helps business and considering that business is what provides the consumer with products and services and employment, why would it in sum, be any different?
Does business need to hold so tight to controlling property?
Not to sound communistic for the lack of individual incentive about the socialistic economic side of the word (the other side being a totalitarian government which is like business holding tight IP)....
But when you die, you can't take you money with you.... you can only enjoy the benefits of the value exchange it provides in improving the social and personal environment you live in. Your Living conditions!
For the consumer to be allowed to do what they do anyway (mass pirate production is not consumer acts but an illegal business usually for profit)... is to reduce business costs that really don't provide genuine benefit to the Living Conditions.
We are all in this together and the music industry RIAA just doesn't seem to get it as they have been the most in the news business attacking those who feed them.... They have lost my business.... I'll listen to free radio instead...
On a larger scale about people... there are over six billion of us and a few (some fraction of one percent) that hog up resources that could be better spent making this world much better living conditions, a great deal better living conditions, an unimaginable better level of living conditions.....but they spend it on keeping that from happening.
The war mongers...
So perhaps in short time there will come enough solid evidence of the anti-benefit of such unnecessary overhead. The evidence sure seems to be getting exposed....
To promote something at a given price range and then have development over runs and resulting higher costs?
Its like a bait and switch program or methodology. What I don't get is why play this game at all?
Who is really fooling who here?
Haven't the computer industry experts figured out realistic cost estimating yet? Other industries have!!
In a short period of time the price of computer hardware goes down. Will the concept of a laptop ever reach the $100 dollar price? Absolutely!!!
What does the cost overruns, over the promoted price, do for the reputation of these experts?
Who is fooling who?
The experts are fooling themselves!!! They are not experts at all!!!
When it becomes genuinely reasonable for laptops to be sold for $100 and Sub-$100, then they will be and by numerous parties that together support fair competition.
This OLPC has already gotten some negative competitor bashing oriented in the style of political bashing.
Don't those involved know it only a matter of time before selling laptops around $100 is no big deal. Actually I suspect a comparative to a laptop usability product will replace it and have more appeal.
1) come out with useful but buggy software 2) have buying customers users report bugs and make suggestions for improvements 3) sell upgrades back to them. 4) don't pay them for any of their work 5) Copyright and patent teh improvements you got from the users. 6) do like autodesk, don't allow the customer/users to sell their used software.
Here you have game players doing a bunch of documentation for free on a game that is commercial.
The web site made money off of the unpaid efforts of the documentators efforts in on site advertising and the sale of the site.
step Seven:
lock down the documentation and site and require all contributors to pay a monthly fee for access.
How can the contributors respond?
Copy the site to another location and sue the pants off of any attempt to stop this.
Using the DMCA to shut the site down is contradictory to the original intent of the contributors.
Maybe on Linux the kernel, but I doubt a few can position themselves of authority on anything regarding open source software legal matters (The GPL v2 is clear enough to not need....). I did I miss some decision or all open source devs?
It is more likely that we engineer a life form that, more naturally than ourselves, perceives the physical world and energies of and even to inspire and manipulate such manifestation outcome... sooner than we develope anything close to the singularity via machines. As such energies as we perceive quantum physics to be.
On the other hand, we are quite the adaptable conscious creatures and capable of extending ourselves. And with the proper self reflective but disconnected objective tools we can even improve our own perception ability and improve our ability to manipulate physical reality. This tool is the abstraction machine of computers, what is being called AI but a lie. Rather it is a reflective abstraction processing machine that we can use to more objectively see the subjective manifestation of our thoughts and shortcoming of wrong or faulty thinking, that we may improve without suffering the consequences of, if only by being able to extrapolate other possibilities of and knwo the difference.
To be able to do so, what happens to the concept of the singularity?
I have what I tell people is a magic dumpster. I think oe something I need or would like to have and it tends to show up at the dumpster. For example this real event is typical: Friday at work it was hot in the office and I thought it would be good to have a small fan under my Desk. End of day and last one out typically checks all the doors to be secure. This can take twenty minutes as the warehouse has grown. I thought it would be nice to have a stand up scooter to kick around or even a battery powered one but that would mean charging it up. Saturday morning by the Dumpster was the perfect working small fan. Saturday evening was a Razor scooter that I fopund only needed a charger and a charger connector to get working.
Though I know its not really the dumpster but myself, there is a matter of physics needing the opportunity to provide in a manner of acceptable to society and not breaking the laws of physics. In other words the dumpster of the large apartment complex is a medium by which manifestation can happen in an explainable manner.
Of course I have an understanding of abstraction Physics and some experience that I "know" thought into what can be called the either of existance can manifest into reality.
Its all this that allows me to "know" this singularity via a stone image of..... man, is prone to failure due to human laziness, deception and the desire some have to take value from others without genuinely earning it.
Hindsight is 20/20 but how do you tell those who haven't taken the time and effort to look, what you see?
The truth of the matter is that man has this Power of Denial...
The Hindu Arabic Decimal system was denied for 300 years. The observations of Galileo were denied for 350 years (by the catholic church until the early 1990s) and I'm sure there are plenty more examples of human denial.
Ultimately Man will not, cannot invent a machine smarter than himself anymore than a theoretical one dimensional being can comprehend a two dimensional object or being... nor can a theoretical two dimensional being comprehend a three dimensional object or being, etc...
Computers will never genuinely be anything more than an extension of man.
However, it is well within human deception to lead the masses to believing otherwise. Which would be very insulting and demeaning to those such a lie is imposed upon.
So called Artificial Intelligence is nothing more then the by-product illusion of automating enough to deceive those humans interacting to believe its not a machine or a machine better than man.
Genuine intelligence is built upon the progression of: Gas, liquid, solid, single cell life, plant life, animal life, consciousness...intelligence
Just as there is a build up of things, structures, technology in society that are a prerequisite of what we have built upon our knowledge, so it is with what is required of genuine knowledge.
Besides, we have plenty enough artificially intelligent people fu&'in things up as it is, we don't need a machine built by faulty human intelligence to give us something worse then the calculation that resulted in the Trillion Dollar Bet and repercussions of dotcom boom and bust, worldcom, enron and 9/11....
In college I had a TBA teacher for a communications class. He spent about five minutes on grammer and said nobody uses it so instead he was going to teach abstraction. As the class progressed he covered the different levels between the concrete and the abstract. I.e a name like Bessy is closer to the concrete in the identification of a cow named Bessy then in the more general identifications of Bessy being a cow or type of cow. As a name is more specific than a category. Unfortunately I did not complete that term due other events in my life, but I have never forgotten what he was on about.
From another direction many years later I came back to what he was on about, It is what I now call "abstraction physics" and its clear that math is a subset of abstraction as is the communication of sciences and fiction, programming etc..
I am currently working on getting an AbstractionPhysics tri domain up (.org ,.net,.com).org for the Abstraction Physics - Virtual Interaction Configuration project (an open source program),.net for community communications (playing with abstractions) and.com for potential funding generation of the project.
I may have the beginning of.net up today and there is always the above link to start with.
ever here the saying "they just don't build things like they use to"?
Do you really wanna fly such warheads over the US in newer planes?
here is another saying "if its not broke then don't fix it."
A large load bomber does not have to be fast but steady and sure.
Another saying "Murphy loves complexity"
But here the real thing to consider. Now they we have told extremist groups that B52 Bomber may or not be caring warheads over the US, unguarded.......
First of all you have to wonder how it is that the media gets such a story and second of all how they are allowed to tell it.
Doesn't this matter equate to national security, or is national security more a spam and IP issue?
Certainly Homeland security has to be in on this information????
But again, how is it that the media are even allowed to find out about such an insident?
Maybe the US government wanted them to media it, in order to commit more terrorism....
Now maybe someone will flamebait mod me down but seriously, how does the media find out about what would otherwise be considered a typical US military plane flight? Did the plane accidently have a big "warheads on board" sign stuck on the side of it?
It was only recently that I got a flamebait rating for being humorous and saying Rick Rubin is the music industry new messiah...... so everyone bow down to him and buy what he says to buy.
He promoted to know all even before he reads the long running comments made by consumers....
but he was right in not showing his license, as he may not have had or needed a license.
The obstruction wasn't refusing to show his license, but for refusing to show his receipt and bag.
On the other hand, should he have needed to? Didn't the cashier handle the transaction well enough to know what was in the bag and that it matched the receipt?
Or was the store checking on its own employees?
He should have shown his receipt as it wasn't a privacy issue unless there was a personal matter between him and the person asking? Com-on Dad, what did you buy me for my birthday?
I'm fully aware of all the excuses... the undeniable endless line of excsues. What ever patents are still active ACER is now getting in the Gateway deal As for the rest of it, Amiga Inc, or is that KMOS is busy burying it as deep as they can.
If you think this is a long line of coincidences or bad luck, you are a fool. You are to close to the Amiga tree to see the forest. Step away from it and open your eyes.
The fact that efficient and user empowering system have been suppressed and the Amiga is only one of them..... And putting this up next to the over complexication of the systems the majority have... does show both side of the coin. What the nasty nature of the coin is.
The MS philosophy of "make people need you" so to be successful has manifested itself thru the industry and to extreams of "anti-trust" entrapments. Manifestation of that mindset is also the essence of the article this thread is about.
Step back and see the bigger picture and when you get clear vision of that, step back again and repeat..
On the flip side but consistent with what you are saying.
The Amiga was taken down, not because there was not enough demand for it, but because it was too efficient.
Mac as a server is not popular because its easier to use.
I believe the answer is, the more people you can require to change the light bulb, the more you employ and the more money you cause to change hands and collect taxes on.
Progress? In what? Lower unemployment rate, shorter vacations, more taxes collected, etc...
Bush would say have faith, forget science...
As to WGA, its an act of paranoia for anti-thieft measure and it cost in overhead. All security measures cost in additional overhead. The solution is to not need it by using personal individualized systems. Like what you might have on a USB thumb drive. Where the only security you need a firewall in your connection to the outside world.
It should be becoming clear that systems and accessibility that don't need such overhead is what teh future holds. A simple matter of addressing the problems cause otherwise.
There are efforts to improve or create or recreate OS's for this future trend. There is DragonFly BSD for one, which has the application base of freesoftware. There is AROS (cloning Amiga on x86) but its application base is more limited. And other OS's that were better but being reincarnated such as BeOS - don't recall its reincarnation name... etc..
Just by looking at the spectrum of OS efficiency past and present OS's is very telling of the industry.
MS functions in the mode of "make people need you" to be successful. That manifest in the ways it has to require more to replace the light bulb.
... and hang it high for everyone to see as a reminder that lawyers always win more.
How many of the residents do you suppose will actually cash in? Are you required to be put on a spam list to collect? Probably. For the $16 dollars you get, what is being gotten from you? Could have windows been sold for $16 dollars less to begin with?
Microsoft is not a bottomless pit of money. With all the lawsuits and judgements against them It'd be interesting to see where there books really are. At least to know how much more they can sacrifice or risk in future uncompetitive wrong doings.
Just how many more laws can they afford to break? More important, how is it that you can over charge so to afford to break the law?
Its the MS cycle that needs to be addresses. Only the Legal system has no clue or care.
....lots of money and kick back ties to the music industry....
The Kickbacks in the music industry have been uncovered before and laws passed to make such illegal. So its now going on at a higher level of abstraction and harder to prove. Fewer involved at the proof point.
With todays technology there is no reason for middle men to exist to plunder the process of paying the artist.
What is lacking is the exchange system to make it all work without plundering.
Seems to me that the labels should be a service the artist go to and pay for, rather than the other way around in a contract distorted manner. And with this it means all proceeds of sales goes to the artists. This way the artist are in control and the labels become competitive in service they provide to the artists.
All artist start small and work their way up and on the way might find investors outside of the label service which should be prohibited from doing so. Where the label service may then be more motivated to protect the artists from abusive investors..
The point is that there is apparently a serious lack of checks and balances, that such lack of allows for abuses and kickbacks that bias what choice of music the rest of us get to hear and know about.
Things change!
Record Club of America changed the way record clubs worked.
The internet technology has changed the way Real estate is done (in the process uncovered abuse techniques and resistance to improvement).
Isn't it time to change the way the music industry works so to genuinely reflect what the consumers are interested in?
Besides the fact that this supposed conflict seems to be just the thing a proprietary licensing company would do to try and degenerate, create conflict within open licenses in such a manner that would allow them to steal......
The hard truth is simply this.
The BSD License allows for the very thing this FUD conflict is supposed to be about.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GIVE BACK WHEN USING THE BSD LICENSE! Does everyone understand that?
If so then what the fu& is this FUD really all about?
It is not the fault of GPL or any other license that this manifestation of the BSD License not only creates the possibility of not giving back but also is the source for allowing the possibility of such FUD to be fabricated.
If the BSD devs don't like the "not sharing part of their own license" then they should change their license.
For the supposed problem is created by the BSD license.
If you really want to compare legal documents and consider the extreamism that can be supported by such documents, perhaps you should look at the licensings of those who are really the responsible parities in promoting this FUD.
Fu&'in read the Proprietary software Licensing of those who have been abusive to developers and consumers and even legally shown to be criminal in the court of law with their activity.
Have people forgotten why such licensings as the BSD and GPL came about?
On another note, perhaps as an analogy or metaphor, have Americans forgotten what the declairation of Independance reads or what teh constitution reads?
Rather than spculate as to who might break laws tomorrow, how about looking at who is breaking them now! And who has a history of law breaking.
Math is a subset.....

I'd strongly promote switching to Linux at work if only the applications I use had realistic alternatives on Linux.
Namely Autocad, Illustrator, a cad/cam package with non-buggy cnc post processors that would plug into a linux version of autocad,....
And what ever the alternatives are, they have to be file compatable as we have a large store of cad drawings to deal with.
There are other programs as well, like filemaker and the resources we have built up in that, etc..
Its not just a matter of finding a similar program but one that have realistic support for existing files and resources.
I have no doubt that many more would change away from Windows if such a realistic change was possible.

That manifest in the ways it has to require more to replace the light bulb.
... and hang it high for everyone to see as a reminder that lawyers
always win more.
With all the lawsuits
and judgements against them It'd be interesting to see where there
books really are. At least to know how much more they can sacrifice
or risk in future uncompetitive wrong doings.
Just how many more laws can they afford to break?
More important, how is it that you can over charge so to afford to break the law?
Its the MS cycle that needs to be addresses. Only the Legal system has no clue or care.
Not Forgetting it wasn't until the early 1990's that the Catholic Church (Pope) exonerated Galileo....

On second thought, somebody just send the pope this post and let him slap himself awake with it.
.... even before he reads all the consumers comments...
Everybody bow down to Rubin now and buy what he tell you.....
....lots of money and kick back ties to the music industry....
Didn't Microsoft recently propose an open source license to the OSI for approval?
Besides the fact that this supposed conflict seems to be just the thing a proprietary licensing company would do to try and degenerate, create conflict within open licenses in such a manner that would allow them to steal......
The hard truth is simply this.
The BSD License allows for the very thing this FUD conflict is supposed to be about.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GIVE BACK WHEN USING THE BSD LICENSE! Does everyone understand that?
If so then what the fu& is this FUD really all about?
It is not the fault of GPL or any other license that this manifestation of the BSD License not only creates the
possibility of not giving back but also is the source for allowing the possibility of such FUD to be fabricated.
