Yes you are completely right. Just the other day I got a friggin' word doc I had to fill out and return and the damn thing was trying to change the normal.dot or what ever that stupid thing is. Which if I accepted would change the formatting of all four of the .docs I grudgingly allow to stay on my hard drive. How would such a scenario work for someone receiving a plague of .docs on their computer and trying to compile and edit them all?

Word is the worst abomination - its clones are probably nearly as bad as they all do all of the same wrong things.

You ask - who would ever think of this? I have done production work on University level textbooks for a major text book publisher and all - yes ALL of the new materials from the Professors at the colleges that I had to reflow into existing textbook material was in what format? In Design? Quark? No, no, no. Word. Fucking word. Even the most intelligent are the most brainless when it comes to things outside their area of expertise. People just don't know how screwed up it is.

I have had writers ask me without no hint of irony what the best format would be for them to set their text if they were to self publish - i.e. have their text plate ready for the printer - invariably before I have been able to answer they will say - Word, right? WRONG!

Sorry to say that Microsoft is synonymous with Word. For many Word is MS and vice versa. Type that up in Microsoft and print it out. Make sure it is in Times. Everybody likes Times. It is really readable. Oh and for the cafeteria memo, type that up in Microsoft and do it in Comic Sans...in pink or something nice for the ladies. It's a bit more freindly (sp) than Times. Knock yourself out guy!

Submitting .docs in court? Surely legal documents should be submitted in an unalterable form such as - in days of yore, printouts - and nowadays PDFs. If you are looking for stupidity at its worst look no further than the legal system of any country. And for the very worst, anything related to (alleged) child abuse. The people working these beats are at the bottom of the legal and social services ladder. Bottom feeders, essentially. The word documents probably has virus infected macros too!

In August 2008, it was revealed that scientists in Japan were able to successfully harvest stem cells from wisdom teeth.[19] This discovery is of great clinical importance, as wisdom tooth extractions are a relatively common type of oral surgery. Patients who have their wisdom teeth removed are currently able to opt to have stem cells from those teeth isolated and saved, in case they should ever need the cells."

I'm stuck on an older mac due to financial reasons. I would like to be up to the minute but for the time being I have to make do with what I have. @damnbunni I have tried perian but maybe a 1.25ghz processor and Tiger are not up to the task for .mkv files even with the help of perian.

Strange though every other kind of file I have thrown at VLC plays fine with out stuttering even when playing via ethernet from another way old mac. Personally I think the .mkv codec is flawed in some way or just not mac friendly but I'm not techy enough to offer a reason.

I also do not think that Apple necessarily makes the best software for it's own OS. VLC is better than QT and DVD player. It plays (almost) everything without issue. The Apple players baulk at the most obvious stuff. This is still true on my STBX wife's recent MacBook. Whine, whine, why won't the file play? Install VLC. How do I do that? OK I'll do it for you. The internet isn't working properly. Safari is crap. Install Firefox or something else. OK. I'll do it for you. Same shit for a few years now in both respects but the answer is usually - go third party!.

iTunes is pretty bad on a mac too. No real alternative that I'm aware of. Songbird? More of the same I suspect but I could be wrong. iPhoto - most horrible software I have ever used. Well, no MS Word gets that prize. I don't think I actually use any of the Apple apps besides iTunes, grudgingly. Great OS, mediocre apps.

Surprised Apple hasn't made a lot of their software 'just work'. Still I wouldn't touch any iteration of windows with a bargepole. Been there, never again.

  15. Re:VLC is crap. on Open Source VLC Media Player Coming To iPad · · Score: 1

Could it be that the version of VLC is not completely compatible with the version of the OS you are running? I think it is quite specific in that regard. The VLC people make older versions of the software available on their site for those of use that are not running the latest OS. Just a suggestion.

  16. VLC not crap on Open Source VLC Media Player Coming To iPad · · Score: 1

The only kind of file I have a problem with are those infernal .mkv videos. VLC does a better job of playing video than Apple's DVD player and Quicktime player. Consequently I never use either of them. Apple should allow this but would they? They may as well cease developing their own video playing software.

I like to feel my way when cooking and use my senses and instincts. It usually works out well. But a year ago I had to switch from gas to electric. What a pain in the arse. Gas is so adjustable and subtle compared to electric. Even after all of this time, cooking every day I find electric an impediment to the way I have been cooking for years. Maybe in a year or two it will seem natural to me. I do not own or need a microwave but if I had one I would probably put it to use for some basic re-heating or very simple cooking.
