  1. Not impressed.... on Netscape 7.0 is Out · · Score: 1

Just downloaded and installed NS7....outside of the nice eye-candy, I'm not to entirely impressed yet. There certainly isn't anything to change me over from Moz 1.0, and if anything, there is too much pushing for their "Netscape Network". Add that to removing the ability to prevent pop-ups, and you have a Microsoft-esque attempt at grabbing market share. Stick with Moz or Galeon.

Firstly, don't blame the distro for the application's manufacturer's actions.

Secondly, Sun has a right to try and recoup some profit off their products, and they did support OpenOffice. We, as consumers, have the right NOT to purchase or seek alternatives.

Thirdly, Perhaps instead of whining about it, one could be supporting the other office apps out there, such as KOffice, GnuOffice (Abiword, etc...), SIAG, et al, would be a more powerful message to those who would consider any M$-like sales manuevers.

Finally, one can always stay with 5.2. It is unfortunate that it appears that Sun supports GPL, GNU/FSF with one hand, then attempts to take financial advantage with the other, but again, Sun has a right to get paid for their efforts, and we have the right to choose whether or not to purchase.

  5. Possible GPL'd source written in code? on Judge Says Microsoft Must Give States Windows Code · · Score: 1

I seem to remember rumors of GPL'd source being intergrated into 2k and XP about a year ago. Certainly, they would be able to find this. If so, how would they address that issue? Could Microsoft be made to pay punitive damages, and to whom?

  7. Accounting on Linux platform on Accounting Systems on Linux? · · Score: 1

I have my own computer/networking business, and I run the entire operation on linux. One of the tasks I have been trying to accomplish is to devise feasable and easily scable linux solutions for small to mid-sized businesses.

Much of the more prominent tasks(email, internet, word proc. spreadsheet, etc..) are easily taken care of. The challenge is where office or field specific functions come into play, especially where databases are concerned. While there are many db solutions and many office suites, trying to intergrate them has been difficult.

Star Office (at this moment), seems to offer the best solution, but trying to get AdabasD set up correctly is like pulling teeth (at least for me.)

I would rather build all of the tables and forms fresh, so as to fit the platform around the network, rather than visa-versa, which a certain Evil Empire has been known to do.

I have found that customers WILL perform the "extra work" to migrate to a new platform, so long as A: they don't have to change the way they do business, and B: they won't have to be forced to migrate or upgrade for a least a VERY long time.

Accounting, tracking, AC/AR, all can be created according to the customer's needs and desires in linux: that is one of my selling points. However, there needs to be some improvement in the ability to intergrate different applications, and make it appear seamless.

  8. In defense of filterng on At the Library: a Briefly Vocal Minority · · Score: 1

A common misconception is that having a filter "limits" free speech. This is not necessarily the case, as a library can offer both filtered and unfiltered access, with the unfiltered being made accessible after authenticating a user is of legal age. The core issue is that the ACLU and ALA (American Library Association) believe that a 5 year old boy has a constitutional right to access, view, and distribute pornography, extremism, et al, and thereby sabotaging and subjugating the manner in which we choose to raise our children. Case in point: When one goes the magazine rack in a bookstore (Hastings, Barnes & Nobel, etc), one notices that the adult material is covered with an opaque cellophane wrap. This keeps the images dicreetly covered while displaying the title. It is also on the higher shelves, so that little hands cannot reach it. I applaud this manner in which it is sold, as this allows me to maintain the restrictions I impose upon my children in order to raise them in the manner I deem necessary. Why then, should my 3 y.o. son be able to have access on the computer at the library what he cannot access in published form? This is a case where the child's "rights" are being elevated past the point of the parents rights. How much more asinine can that be? Is the State now responsible not only for the children's physical well-being, but moral and spiritual as well? How can an entity that maintains seperation of Church and State also be the arbiter of morality? I do not want to limit access to adults. I merely wish to have safeguards in place to be able to allow my child in a public library without fear of him being exposed to material that he is neither ready for yet, nor healthy for him.
