  1. Re:Whoa on First Look At Windows 7 On an Entry-Level Netbook · · Score: 1

I think part of the problem is that people don't seem to understand what netbooks are for. They're for looking at the 'net. eg, running a browser and an email client. They are certainly NOT for running Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Visual Studio or playing games.

I think people view them as bargain laptops, and then complain when it doesn't do all the same thing that standard laptops do at 2-3 times the price.

  2. Re:Windows has ESP? on First Look At Windows 7 On an Entry-Level Netbook · · Score: 4, Insightful

That's a really bad example. With Windows Vista and Windows 7 I *DO* have my desktop in 15 seconds. I've never had that with any previous version of Windows. Much of the "pre-loading" is actually done post boot. MS have even moved many services that don't need to be ready straight away (eg Defender) to the new "Delayed Start" setting (see services.msc) so they load after your desktop is already ready.

Vista and Windows 7 use a lot of RAM for caching so that your computer is faster. It's not using more RAM just to annoy you. After all, you PAID for that RAM, so why not actually use it to speed up your system? If an application needs lots of RAM and you're running short on physical RAM, it will free up that RAM and make it available for use by other applications automatically so you haven't lost anything.

If you're that bothered - just stick with Windows 98 which doesn't do any of this stuff.

Entry Level != Lowest Spec Available

The lowest spec available would be a niche market for people that need a very low powered machine - eg the original Eee PC. Many netbooks actually have 2GB of RAM. Those specs ARE pretty typical entry-level netbook specs looking at the reviews sat on my desk.

They need to get IE8 onto every desktop as fast as possible. It should not be "opt in" because most people don't even know what a "browser" is, let alone why they need a new one. In a BBC survey many people though the browser WAS the internet, or that the IE icon on their desktop was how they "download Google". Seriously - roll it out to everyone. The world will be a much better place (especially for us web developers).

Well if it didn't have the glitches and install issues, Silverlight is actually FAR better than Flash for what they were using it for. Flash is simply awful to program for - it's really designed for simple animations and it's now being used for all sorts of other stuff for which it's not really suited. Silverlight is designed from the ground up to be an interactive front end for powerful web applications, not for making animations. So it wasn't a stupid idea choosing it, it's just a shame that you need admin privilages to install it and it seems to have some technical issues for some users. In a year or so's time when these glitches are ironed out, I'm sure Silverlight will really start to take off.

The problem with IE8 is that it IS rendering things properly (or at least, a hell of a lot better than it was before) and the websites are coded around old bugs which have now been fixed.

There is NO bluetooth keyboard support in the iPhone bluetooth stack, therefore it is not crippled! You cannot cripple something which is not even present in the first place. My car is not "crippled" because it does not have wings. If I wanted something with wings, I could have bought a plane.
