I hope it does not also cause anyone to miss those negative reviews that have horrible writing errors and flawed arguments. Those can sometimes help the product maker.
Phishing types are already preparing false communications and false sites with such warnings "from google". There are certainly many mechanisms in existence to help authenticate that a communication is actually from google. Hopefully the use of such mechanisms is clever enough to avoid more contamination.
CommuniGate Pro is not FOSS and my opinion is biased as I have business interest in this platform. However I do believe it is the best solution to this problem and many others despite not being "Free". It is available on most any platform you would want to run it on, supports Linux (not just specific distros) and has implemented enough RFCs to be regarded as a comprehensive communications operating system. The Flash client "Pronto!" has IM auto-archive. There is a PKI built in permitting the actual storage of the archives to be automatically encrypted by the rules engine on the storage device.
SecuritySpy is one of the best software solutions I have found for affordable video surveillance. The software provides support for a variety of network cameras and similar solutions. MacOS appears to be the only supported operating system.
The flash based Pronto! email, calendar, VoIP, media, rss reader, jabber, pbx and more client we make is light, fast, and scales much better. The install can be downloaded, installed and configured in less than 30 minutes. The entire package is under 15 megs single binary with more than 20 operating systems/hardware combinations supported. There is a live demo system running at http://talktoip.com/ if you'd like to create an account and see for yourself. If you would rather run the software to test you can get it in the CommuniGate Pro package from ftp://ftp.communigate.com/Pub/CommuniGatePro/5.1 . 5.1.12 is the most recent stable version.
As the subject says I am biased for being directly affiliated with the developers of Pronto!

Mouse or Trackball?

I switched to a Kensington Expert Mouse last year for a similar problem. This input device works better for me than the traditional mouse. My wrist pain problem is so bad that I switched the trackball to my other hand and this has improved things a bit for me. I am not a graphics professional and I try to avoid the Mouse input device as much as possible. Guides like this table help very much.
IMHO the world needs a reminder that email is asynchronous. I have seen the reply-fast-to-email strategies that some employ do more harm than good. In fact I blame this for all of the reply-all mishaps I have seen over the years. Can everyone please set their email client to check for new messages every 60 to 90 minutes and help re-pace the world on this issue. I hope this will start to erase the few words meaningless messages that can add to the weight of an INBOX such as "thanks man" or "ok, I'lll check". Seriously, with technologies like IM and Presence now evolving to workable standards I think this would be wise. As soon as the closed IM networks model shatters (see skype, AOL, MSN.NET, etc...) we'll all be better off with realistic expectations around email. Email is great, I do not need to install Lotus to receive a message from your Lotus Notes system. When that is true for other communications, such as instant messaging moving to SIP and Jabber I will be happier. I should not need to install Skype to use voice over IP or IM with you. What a waste of time (like posting gripes to message boards).
I do not often find electricity near toilet seats in the US. Are there maybe building codes against this? Perhaps contractors are not accoustomed to this need. This has been the only obstacle I have found to this upgrade.
I am admittedly biased as I am directly connected to CommuniGate Systems. While Groupware and Scalability are interesting, what is really amazing is we're also delivering an integrated and powerful Voice over IP applications with CommuniGate Pro that includes Software PBX, Media Server, and a fully featured NAT traversing SIP server. Most of this available in the new development branch (5.0c1). We have 2 development branches (somewhat BSD-like): current and stable.
A download is available in a fully functional version except for a few limitations:

I am not connected to the company selling these in any way other than I think I may have purchased something from them once.

I welcome versions of Cyanogen without the google applications.
