I had an old desk that I got rid of by putting on the street, and putting a "free" sign on it. Put it out at 10 pm, it was gone by 8 am the next morning.

  2. Miami, the Gunshine State on Machine Gun Fire From Military Helicopters Flying Over Downtown Miami · · Score: 1

BTW, just to quibble, it's the Arsht Center. This was shot in Downtown Miami, and just north of it. Apparently, there were other places in Miami-Dade County invaded, too. I'm just wondering: Did anyone fire back?

It doesn't really push wars underground. It's a cold thing to say, but I'd rather lose the WTC than all of Lower Manhattan. And we've had ideological/religious rebellions, brush fire wars and small-scale and larger scale banditry under one banner or another for all of our history. But the war on (some) terrorists, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the wars in Africa aren't going to end civilization as we know it. Thank John von Neuman for creating the game theory that proved nuclear war was, on a national level, the ultimate zero-sum game. And, with the Soviet Union no longer existing and sponsoring terrorists and "wars of national liberation", the world despite what you see in the news, is becoming a more peaceful place.

  4. Higgs: Practicalities on Ask Slashdot: What Are the Implications of Finding the Higgs Boson? · · Score: 1

All this is presuming that the mass field can be manipulated in a fashion similar to the EM band. A big assumption. Reduced inertia: A safety field for vehicles. It's not the fall that kills, it's the impact. If you impact with the mass of a snowflake, you're probably not going to plow as deep a hole. Localized lowered/raised gravity. Faster vehicles (of all types again) that use less energy to get to speed. Inertialess or lowered inertia drives. If you can diddle with the direction/polarity, you might have a space drive to explore the Solar System a lot faster and more cheaply. And probably a MUCH better payload to fuel ratio. Fly me to the Moon! And possibly a drive that uses electricity directly like an ion drive would be a lot more energetic. "Gravity Polarizers" a la Baron Harkonnen. Also a big aid in construction, both terrestrial and for something like the Beanstalk/Space Elevator to synchronous orbit. And drives for the same. Though I'm not sure I'd want to live in a building that was held up and together by the thing. Power failure could be...your downfall. Someone who knows physics better than I can probably suggest hundreds of places that being able to make the inertial constant a variable would be interesting and practical. And then there's Superman: http://www.qwantz.com/fanart/superman.pdf

  10. Intel supporting LibreOffice on Intel Joins LibreOffice · · Score: 1

The LibreOffice team has made a VERY determined effort to clean up the legacy code that's built up over the years. And while Intel is going to focus on Windows, I believe that any extra eyes on the basic code will end up in all the platforms LO supports. Be interesting to see what features get added. I doubt they'll go hog wild. I think the mistake that Microsoft made with Office is that Office 97 was about all most people needed, but they had to keep adding features to keep selling. One thing LibreOffice could do is push learning it more in schools. Microsoft really does this, and that's probably their most effective marketing.
