This is completely unconstitutional. Everyone should have a freedom of choice. Entering a dormitory is not the same as entering a prison. Just because university is loosing a contract (which is basically a legalized monopoly) does not mean that it can ban other choices?
A side note... Has anyone noticed Coke's predominance at many universities? For example, at my University you will not be able to buy Pepsi or any other Pepsi products (i.e. Mountain Dew which we all love;-) enywhere on campus. That pisses me more off than the phone... hehe
Hmm... so you would trust Microsoft or AOL to guard your privacy, to protect your constitutional rights?
I wouldn't.
Do you get to vote for the CEO in a corporate capitalism? Of course not! This is like dictatorship. Not much different from the communism. In Russia they had politburo, here we'll have chairmen of the board. Same thing, different name.
How long before we're left with 10 corporations in America? According to the rate of mergers so far it'll in 10 years max.
Will the government matter whan that happens? Peobably not. Corporations will do everything that the governemnt does today. People will loose their democracy and choice when that happens.
Very sad news. Hopefully FTC will put a stop to this.
Well... Mr Cowpland probably is not allowed to answer some of the legal questions since the case is not over. I'm sure he'll issue a press release or give an interview when it's over.
Tesla was one of _the_ best scientists of 20th century. They could have named him Man of the Century easily. Tons of stuff that we take for granted today was invented in part by him.
Virtual Characters are nothing new. Only thing that is new is the marketing force behind it;-).There has been several successful virtual characters so far (and many unsuccessful). One of the more successful ones was a virtual model for the Elite Modeling agency. Check it here. She could not speak, however. There are a lot of other virtual characters that can speak however. Check virtual friends by Haptek. Also, check out Virtual personalities (or verbots) by Virtual Personalities Inc. here.
Those who know their computer graphics also must know Nadia Thallman and her virtual personalities (you can't forget virtual Merlyn Monroe) over at Miralabs. Microsoft also has "Agents" which act as virtual characters and personalities.
I love Lynx as much as you do however... no frames and poor table hacks have made me use it less and less. I prefer w3m. It does almost everything better than Lynx. Also, if you'd like to see pictures, you don't have to save it and then view it again... you can just pipe it to svgalib plug.
I wish Lynx and w3m combined their forces and made a single, console based, browser.
Aha! Thanks for the info! Quick question and hope you don't mind me asking... where did you hear about this?:) I'd like to get some news about local, Ottawa, issues.
Firts of all... I notice several people mention that they know how many people are on their WAN. How dod you check for something like that?
I'm an unhappy @home user. I was happy when I got it about 1.5 yrs ago but now it's too damn slow. I get 15K from most sites during the day and thats just too damn slow.
Is there any way to optimize linux for @home? Any TCP/IP stack options you recommend for setting? MTU maybe?
I am sure Bruce Perens will have more to say but in the meantime go to http://www.nocode.org/ (this is an organization reponisble for lobbying of the FTC regarding this issue.
Does it really matter who "Time" chooses? Who decides at Time who the person of the century is? It's an editor/owner type of deal. Why should I listen to some guy in a suit telling me that the man of the century is Einstein or whatever?
I recommend you all stop waisting your time thinking what a single most important person of the century is. Just think about "people" who have influenced particular fields or parts of the every day life.
There is no single "Man of the century" that will be the man of the century for everyone.
PS: Why not have a person of the century? Women are people as well.. maybe TIME hasn't figured that one yet.
JP was a wannabe hacker and he managed to gain a lot of access to many hacker groups by providing the groups with publicity. He 'called' them (us) a 'friend'. Actually, what he was doing was collecting information on 'friends' and putting it into a database of which FBI and NSA would be proud. He now sells this information he collected to law enforcement officers.
Questions for JP:
1) Why did you betray your 'friends'? 2) How can you now be trusted? 3) How do you feel about spending this dirty money? 4) What were your charity donations for 1998 tax year?
Corel would be MUCH better without Cowpland... he made a series of bad decisions in the last 5 years and he was mostly influenced by his ego and his rivlary with Terry Matthews (CEO of Newbridge and his friend from high school).
PS: I worked for Corel and many people inside Corel have the same thoughts as me...

You never know.. Corel might have some sort of connections with RedHat and they don't want to "burn" any bridges by not recommending a RH product :)
The fact that Corel chose Debian should speak for itself.

Also... Who gives TIME to decide for everyone? What happens if NY Times decides that Roosevelt is the man of the century?
Ridiculous!

Does this sound familiar to you? Thought so...
I agree! All these "small" things DO add up. We have to take action!
They SHOULD be sued just like Real was sued. Software industry HAS to take notice.. They need to be set as an example.

QT is a time bomb... Many people don't like its licenses and I don't like it either. Maybe it's time we start working on FreeQT again?
