    The local internet gaming cafe has the same problem. (they're running windoze, though they wish they didn't)

    Keyboards that come unplugged never work when plugged back in a running machine.

    Mice don't either....


    What difference does windoze make? None that I can see.

    It still grabs a specific IRQ... often times an irq that's
    also hardwired by some not so bright pci board manufacturers...

    Can anyone shed some light on this ps/2 workee, no workee deal?

    Ok... I have some ISA cards. I admit it...
    they're not all that bad and I'll always have hardware around
    that can use them...
    I do like seeing pci only mb's out there and will welcome a
    wider acceptance of usb (let's get those prices down) soon.

    I, however, don't see myself using something like that for a few years yet....

    RANT!!!!!




    Am I the only person out there that refuses to buy a damn
    celery or p-II p-III system because they don't have any
    freakin boards that DON'T use that atrocity called
    PS/2 ???

    KILL IT!!!! What kind of a freakin moron came up with the idea
    of an architecture that REQUIRES a freakin REBOOT when the device
    comes unplugged??

    I LOVE the fact (with my old AT style keyboard) that I can unplug
    EVERYTHING from my server after setup... and....
    if I ever (god forbid) HAVE to physically sit on it for something
    I can't do over the network... I can just plug in my keyboard
    monitor and SERIAL mouse (if necessary) and go to work.

    Hello!!! Isn't there ANYONE else out there that agrees
    that PS/2 must die?

    End Rant... *sigh*
    Thanx a whole freakin lot ibm... and thanx to the idiots
    in the industry for continuing retarded architecture.

    few things for me would be nice.

    I wouldn't mind wearing a headgear deal (given it wasn't toooo big... ya know? ) if it was capable of a few things.

    Integrated with my whole house through voice command.
    I would love to turn on the stereo and switch cd's from anywhere in the house.
    Turn off the front porch light when I'm in the backyard with the
    8" Telescope.
    Talk to my circle of friends without having to go through the whole
    phone/busy-signal/voic-mail junk.... (I have a few ideas on that one.)
    See who's at the front door.... From work.
    Re-route my HOUSE line through the head-gear.. (transparently)
    Check my e-mail. Open doors. Change lights.
    Set oven temp (no... I don't want auto cooked crap)
    And of course cramming VR into it so I can handle e-mail, web-browsing,
    site building, report genration, etc. etc. etc...
    that would make it infinitely better.

    Just my take is all.

    Dangit.. Every year it's the same thing... they promise us
    vegetables.. and then at the last minute, they take them away.
    We're hungry computer folks out here people....I don't
    care if they're frozen or not... I actually prefer them piping hot...
    with lots of cheese and sour cream w/chives... Yummmm ;>

    Do you think they could pass out holiday Ramen blocks in the meantime?

    Besides the obvious baby-boom in 9 months...
    The cessation of all TV tomorrow would not be a bad
    thing. Network TV turns your brain to cottage cheese
    and it dribbles out on your pillow when you sleep.
    Cable programming isn't much better.

    If there was cable/satellite service that offered
    educational-only programming... I might subscribe.
    Even then I still wouldn't watch it that much.

    Life is too short to watch fantasies all day.

    Do yourself a favor and pick up a book... even if it's fiction
    you'll still be working your brain cells more than tv.

    Met my wife at work.

    Walked in one day and walked right past her. (she was new)
    Went and sat down at my desk and started to work.
    Got up a minute later (just flat out had to) and introduced myself to her.

    First time in my life I ever felt I just HAD to introduce myself right away.

    All my previous gf's and so's I always took my time from
    when I met them first, till getting around to knowing them better.

    Not so with my wife. Saw her... Had to meet her...
    We hit it off famously (despite my lack of haircuts and ratty stained clothes) and were married appx. 2 months later.

    She's a geek grrl (though she won't admit it) as well as quite a sophisticate.


    Oh yeah, don't judge a book by it's cover either.
    I love looking good for my wife and she appreciates it as well, but
    I attract young female attention when I dress nice. As a result I normally wear ratty clothes most places when she's not with me.
    It's interesting to see the types of people that dismiss me
    out of hand when I dress that way. Then note their
    reactions when they meet me in my 'Presentable' state.
    Personally I find most of it disgusting. *shrug*

    REAL people usually don't pay attention to dress.

    There are good geek guys out there... most of us just don't
    want to be bothered to get the really pretty feathers out of the
    closet from behind all our computer equipment.

    All I can say is... talk... to a lot of people....
    The more you do... the better prepared you will be when
    what you want comes around.

    I never did before... but I'm a firm believer in Destiny now.

    I see that some updates have required re-compile
    and re-format of existing partitions to use now
    source... *ouch*

    Any ideas on how many more times this may happen before the beta-testing is done??
    (Hmm... got first post earlier and didn't even try. :> Nice way to start the evening. *grin*)

    I've used Netscape as my main browser for years.
    It's been irritating me to no end that it's become such
    a bloated and unstable application. :/

    With the current events surrounding the M$ trial, one
    wonders how much better of a product Navigator would be at this time
    if they'd not had to deal with M$'s embrace and corrupt
    policy on html/java/javascript standards.
    Seems that 90% of the time that Nav crashes on me these days
    is on pages that use m$ specific Java-crud. This is
    truly irritating.

    If IE had been written as a competitive application, by a
    company _other_ than m$, without m$'s specific
    advantages as a monopoly (which I firmly belive it is), it's my opinion that Netscape Corp. never would
    have sold out. In fact, I belive that it would have been a
    much MUCH bigger company today and we'd have a much
    better navigator because of it.

    Without m$'s clout.... IE would have died a horrible, yet appropriate,
    Death.

    Bummer daze... :(

    Why do people let the public see files on their ftp before they are done uploading them? Isn't that just silly? (I know it's just a test for them... but still) It makes a whole lot more sense to have all the files in place (and mirrored) before setting the public read permissions... Is it not? Anything else is just un-professional. Just my Take... *shrug*

    This is NOT a current G3...
    Yet.. you are right.. it IS the pci card that's required.

    They still neglected to mention such on the phone.
    (Sorry I don't know more about macs... I prefer Motorola chips in big-iron machines)

    thought....
    It'd be nice to have a linux distro that ran as
    an application on windows that wouldn't require you to re-boot to get back to windoze...
    but wait... that would suck as your stable linux
    would now be prone to windoze faults...

    then again.. (if you have the resources) there's
    VMware and the like....

    Still this does seem the way to go for some folks...
    I've a few friends myself that are trying out linux
    using the umsdos loadlin method... *shrug*

    I figure when they get confident enough they'll switch
    to a REAL distro...
    It's not their fault they were MS-netized a long time ago.. :/

    unplug linux-drive
    plug in small hd...

    Install winblows
    unplug small hd re-plug as slave
    plug back in linux-drive

    boot
    copy necessary /windows/system files etc. etc
    to directory on linux drive...
    edit wine.conf
    format windoze off of small hd (don't wanna contaminate anything)
    chuck small drive back into parts box

    The one they didn't tell him he needed extra software (==$400) to watch movies with.
    Don'tcha just love build it yourself Macintosh ordering personell?

    (No.. I wasn't around when he ordered it, or that wouldn't have happened)

    This is indeed the most appropriate approach.

    Never EVER give out more information than is necessary... (too late if they read this list).

    Best case scenario, they will take a second look
    to make sure they are right and realize their mistake.


    A minimalistic reply is always your best approach for first response.

    There's another option that's quite nice.

    Rigid gas-permeable lenses....

    The trick is to put them in before you go to bed and take them out the next morning....

    Given a good 6-8 hours of sleep, your eyes will stay adjusted to the curve of the lens and you
    will have good vision for the next 8-12hrs WITHOUT
    having the lenses in.

    The more near-sighted you are, the less effective this is,
    or rather shorter period of time it stays effective...
    but it's great for kids.... ask your Opthomalogist.

    Has anyone ever come up with an interface that would plug into cpu socket on the motherboard and
    allow you to place the cpu into the other end
    of the interface??

    I.E. a fibre-optic channel or something...(is copper
    wire 2 feet in length fast enough for cpu traffic??)
    This would allow you to cool the cpu seperate from the internal
    components of the rest of your computer...
    You might even be able to stick the cup in
    a liquid nitrogen bath (sealed) inside a cooled unit.

    I can think of a number of ways.. just curious as
    to wether or not anyone has ever done anything like this
    or if anyone knows why this is a bad idea???

    Is anyone else getting tired of non-compatible cpu sockets? Ok.. so I can see AMD using the slot A tech to utilize the alpha tech.... I can see Intel's switch to the slot 1 (because they hold the patent) But how many different freakin sockets does Intel have to bring out? Please... this is getting ridiculous. Socket 7 was great.. (had some drawbacks.. yes) Socket 370 or whatever that non-slot celeron is Slot 1 Slot 2 and now a NEW socket design from Intel? Gah!
