    I've been ripping and compressing mp3's
    with the Grip proggie... Works kick butt.
    Nice interface... flawless mp3info integration...
    even a submission button for adding your (unfound)
    cd info to the mp3info db.

    I know some folks don't like the xing encoder.
    Personally I find it to work fine for my purposes.
    The best part about Grip is that you can use a variety
    of different encoders... use your favorite.

    Also rips/encodes flawless mp3's with moderate to heavy loads on my amd k6-2 375.

    I always stand/walk/sit downwind of non-smokers.

    I do NOT like whiney, inconsiderate folks who rant.

    I have the 24hr crabby flue... it should be gone
    in about 17 more hours... *erf* I'll resist the urge to post until then.

    After all... This IS a free country.. and yet all

    Smoking sucks... it's a filthy habit and I personally
    wish that it never existed.
    That doesn't give me the right to ban it or make it illegal.
    Get a fscking plastic bubble yourself.

    The govt. has nothing to do with bandwidth usage.
    E-mail is not theirs to tax...

    I can't belive you're all taking this seriously.

    If they tax it... we'll sue... it's unconstitutional and totally

    Started from just two people....
    Adam and Eve.... Who were tragically stranded
    on this planet when their inter-stellar drive
    ceased functioning.

    It took them 2 years to slowly motor their way into our system (the closest at the time) and find
    that this planet was habitable (mostly).

    The rest is history. Poorly documented of course...
    but I'm sure it would be wonderful if someone
    found their flight recorder... ya know?

    What would happen to society if everyone suddenly (by a miracle) learned how their computers worked?

    Gee?... Microsoft wouldn't be able to sell their product anymore?

    I mean, if everyone knew how their computers worked...
    would they be willing to spend money on a product that
    used it the wrong or inefficient way?

    Yes... Anyone who can read a book can become an MCSE......

    As you pointed out... it's a credible certification to the vast majority of the world for
    good reasons.

    The main one being that it's an excellent way to make
    money off of idiots that continue to buy and use a screwed up product.

    Let's face it... Microsoft has made it possible for an ENTIRE INDUSTRY to be created where there
    once was none.
    What is this industry? Ha! The industry of keeping their product up and running.


    There have always been computer techs from day one of the computer industry.
    Now there are thousands and thousands of MCSE techs out
    there.

    I WAS going to get that training as well... till I met a bunch of em. The only ones that REALLY know what they're doing are
    the ones that have been running OTHER OS's for years
    and only got the training to make extra cash on the side. *shrug*
    Whatever... and damn if this isn't Waaaaaay Off topic.. *shrug*

    I'd rather be in R&D

    No... admittedly the users aren't doing that much.
    That also doesn't count the Icecast server (4/128kbit streams),
    the active ftp site I run. Not to mention all the
    folks connected to the other services I host like:
    4 Mucks. 1 Mud. 1 XSW server and the quakeI
    server for my lan.

    I'd say that's not bad at all for a little p-100 (586)

    Try running half that with M$... *sheesh*

    How many of you out there are like myself?

    Given 5 minutes.. I can sleep anywhere, anytime
    in any environment (ok.. ALMOST any environment)

    Sun, no sun, Monitor, no monitor, Radio (LOUD), no
    radio, people, no people, storms, cars, trains, parks
    Hell.. anywhere... I don't even have to be comfortable.
    Heh... 'Course.. I figure I suffer from serious, self inflicted
    sleep deprivation... but I don't ever remember having
    problems with sleeping.
    And uhh... screensavers? What's that? Hehehe :>

    10:47am - Some services failed after reboot

    10:45am - Reboot because the System log was full

    I uh... wouldn't post these kinds of statistics for MY server.
    6:16am up 101 days, 17:50, 29 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
    I did the installation and set up 32 days earlier than that.. but someone kicked the power plugs out.
    Gee.. no re-boots... no problems.. nada... *shrug*

    This is a transitionary generation.
    Computers have exploded onto the scene and have
    infiltrated almost every environment we occupy.

    Interesting to not that it's advances have rushed
    ahead much faster than the population's education has.
    Hence the popularity of M$ dummy-ware.
    This doesn't have to be.. and will be changing in
    the next few years.
    Ever see a kid who'd Pop was a System administrator?
    A kid who grew up sitting on his knee while Pop ran
    BIG *nix machines? Gee... being raised in that
    environmnet makes for a pretty savvy *nix dude.
    It's all environment and exposure... Kids in school
    today are using computers on a regular basis...
    (Yeah.. Ok.. so a lot of schools are still way behind.. but it's getting better)
    They're starting out with skills that we never learned at that age
    because we didn't have the computers.

    LINUX IS NOT COMPLICATED.... It's just more involved
    that what most people are used to.
    Total and complete morons drive through LA traffic
    EVERY DAY!!... Is this easy? Is this Effortless?
    It seems like.. but it's not.. driving is something you get
    used to over time... It seems confusing at first... then as you
    learn it BECOME's almost effortless...

    Watching a 5 year old putter around inside a cruddy M$ box
    to get his game to run properly is amazing.
    Makes me wish all kids were exposed to linux at that age.


    Hang in there... be patient.. and deal with it...
    Linux is not really for our maximum benefit (though I admit
    that I get a hell of a kick outta using it)
    It's for the future generation to use to design
    the next Confusing as hell OS on.

    You could fit a massive ammount of OS and game on one DVD disk...
    Here's a thought... why not have One disk on DVD to boot your machine...
    then additional games you could buy on cd after it's booted?

    Personally... I listen to 128kbit mp3s all the time.
    I have all of my CD's ripped and encoded. I DON'T
    have a stereo, only my computer. I don't like
    putting a cd in my cd-rom drive and running it endlessly
    for weeks on end.... besides.. it's not a 10-100 Disk
    cd-changer anyway.

    I even run my own Icecast server (don't ask.. it's private) since it's easier for me to store the stuff
    on the server and listen to it from there without bogging
    down my own harddrives with massive files.

    Here's my problem. I would love to listen to streaming AIFF files... that would be fantastic.

    Anyone know of any streaming servers or players?
    I have the bandwidth.
    Unfortunately.. that would mean either a huge multi-cd player/drive
    attached to my server or ripping them all and storing
    them on the harddrive space that I don't have.

    Fortunately.. 2 things are changing fast...
    1) Bandwidth is increasing and getting cheaper.
    2) Storage medium is getting more dense and cheaper.

    When the bandwidth and storage capabilities reach the
    point where I'll be happy... everyone will be throwing
    AIFF files back and forth... *shrug*


    Until then? I'll keep listening to my 24/7 streaming MP3s... thanx.

    born realized that if they had any kids they would
    grow up to be a nerotic toad like you.

    Umm... so they were right... maybe the naysayers
    about this project are wrong?
    I, for one, don't really care either way. The information
    they get out of completing the project will be interesting.
    Getting sucked up by a black hole or disappearing
    in a big bang would be interesting as well.
    I just hope it doesn't happen when I'm sleeping..
    or is so fast that I miss it... (that would suck)

    Personally, I've been an AMD fan for a while now.
    (Yeah.. so I'm not much of a gamer.. so shoot me.)

    Seriously though... with the release of the new Athalon
    and the changes it represents in the face of Intel's
    continuation of a mediocre genre of chips... I predict
    a long standing run of higher end AMD's as becoming the
    power house chips of the near future. No... I
    don't think they'll replace Intel... but with the
    architecture changes and the Alpha bus technology
    their future looks brighter than Intel's, if they
    can keep their grip on things.

    Unless something happens in the next few years to
    change the current trend... I won't be buying anything
    but AMD chips for a long while. They're good, they're cheap and now they're faster than intel.

    btw... the Athalon is in competition with the lower end Xeon chips... Last time I checked those were selling for Waaaaay more than the Athalon ever hoped... no?

    AMD has always been cheaper...
    Now they're looking to be cheaper AND Faster.

    (Intel would have to sell it's Xeon cheaper than the K7 to have amd be more expensive and the k7 would still be faster. I.E. worth the price)

    IF (and ONLY if) I was a Gamer... I'm sure I would have
    bought more intel chips up till now.
    The truth of the matter is that I've not purchased
    an Intel cpu since AMD came out with their K6 line
    of processors.
    Celery/P-II/P-III ??? wtf?
    Why the hell would I buy a chip that is made to be
    incompatible with all my existing MB's?
    Screw that... Intel only went to the Slot 1 tech because they have a freakin patent on it.

    I admire AMD for choosing the Alpha bus chipset.
    For one.. it's superior to intel's. Two, it may
    provide cross compatibility with Alpha cpu's in the
    future. Three? As far as I know.. anyone can liscence
    the specs and create their own processor for it...
    I.E. Cyrix winchip etc...

    How many other non-intel brands of chips can you put into a Slot I or Slot 2 MB?

    My savings have already started towards a 4-way
    AMD K7.
    AMD..... Works for me.
