I've been ripping and compressing mp3's with the Grip proggie... Works kick butt. Nice interface... flawless mp3info integration... even a submission button for adding your (unfound) cd info to the mp3info db.
I know some folks don't like the xing encoder. Personally I find it to work fine for my purposes. The best part about Grip is that you can use a variety of different encoders... use your favorite.
Also rips/encodes flawless mp3's with moderate to heavy loads on my amd k6-2 375.
1) Not breathing. 2) Bringing your own air. 3) Not going outside? 4) Moving to a 100% mormon community.

Yes... Anyone who can read a book can become an MCSE......
As you pointed out... it's a credible certification to the vast majority of the world for good reasons.
The main one being that it's an excellent way to make money off of idiots that continue to buy and use a screwed up product.
Let's face it... Microsoft has made it possible for an ENTIRE INDUSTRY to be created where there once was none. What is this industry? Ha! The industry of keeping their product up and running.
There have always been computer techs from day one of the computer industry. Now there are thousands and thousands of MCSE techs out there.
I WAS going to get that training as well... till I met a bunch of em. The only ones that REALLY know what they're doing are the ones that have been running OTHER OS's for years and only got the training to make extra cash on the side. *shrug* Whatever... and damn if this isn't Waaaaaay Off topic.. *shrug*
Thanx for you most informative reply. I have taken your advice to heart and gone against a life long aversion to muds. I have an ROT running on my server now as well. (GrandDaddy of Diku muds).
It is my hope that this will show you that I am not a total loser.
Thank you for your support.
p.s. I still think muds are a waste of time. Mwuahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaa!
Just wondering... Since the plans for Micros~1's offices and Gates' house are public record... Anyone have the time and the gumption to Get them and whip up some kick-butt QuakeX or Unreal or even Half-Life levels out of em? Granted I only have Quake I & II and don't game.. but hey.. would be neat... Put the big evil overlord in the East wing? was it? Heh...
No... admittedly the users aren't doing that much. That also doesn't count the Icecast server (4/128kbit streams), the active ftp site I run. Not to mention all the folks connected to the other services I host like: 4 Mucks. 1 Mud. 1 XSW server and the quakeI server for my lan.
I'd say that's not bad at all for a little p-100 (586)
Bummer... How many of you out there are like myself?
Given 5 minutes.. I can sleep anywhere, anytime in any environment (ok.. ALMOST any environment)
Sun, no sun, Monitor, no monitor, Radio (LOUD), no radio, people, no people, storms, cars, trains, parks Hell.. anywhere... I don't even have to be comfortable. Heh... 'Course.. I figure I suffer from serious, self inflicted sleep deprivation... but I don't ever remember having problems with sleeping. And uhh... screensavers? What's that? Hehehe:>
3:22pm - Network connections down due to router failure, possibly related to thunderstorms and power failures in the area
2:59pm - Network connections intermittently up
12:40pm - Network connections down due to router failure
11:02am - Services restarted
10:47am - Some services failed after reboot
10:45am - Reboot because the System log was full
10:30am - Network connections down due to router failure
I uh... wouldn't post these kinds of statistics for MY server. 6:16am up 101 days, 17:50, 29 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 I did the installation and set up 32 days earlier than that.. but someone kicked the power plugs out. Gee.. no re-boots... no problems.. nada... *shrug*
This is a transitionary generation. Computers have exploded onto the scene and have infiltrated almost every environment we occupy.
Interesting to not that it's advances have rushed ahead much faster than the population's education has. Hence the popularity of M$ dummy-ware. This doesn't have to be.. and will be changing in the next few years. Ever see a kid who'd Pop was a System administrator? A kid who grew up sitting on his knee while Pop ran BIG *nix machines? Gee... being raised in that environmnet makes for a pretty savvy *nix dude. It's all environment and exposure... Kids in school today are using computers on a regular basis... (Yeah.. Ok.. so a lot of schools are still way behind.. but it's getting better) They're starting out with skills that we never learned at that age because we didn't have the computers.
LINUX IS NOT COMPLICATED.... It's just more involved that what most people are used to. Total and complete morons drive through LA traffic EVERY DAY!!... Is this easy? Is this Effortless? It seems like.. but it's not.. driving is something you get used to over time... It seems confusing at first... then as you learn it BECOME's almost effortless...
Watching a 5 year old putter around inside a cruddy M$ box to get his game to run properly is amazing. Makes me wish all kids were exposed to linux at that age.
Hang in there... be patient.. and deal with it... Linux is not really for our maximum benefit (though I admit that I get a hell of a kick outta using it) It's for the future generation to use to design the next Confusing as hell OS on.
You could fit a massive ammount of OS and game on one DVD disk... Here's a thought... why not have One disk on DVD to boot your machine... then additional games you could buy on cd after it's booted?
Personally... I listen to 128kbit mp3s all the time. I have all of my CD's ripped and encoded. I DON'T have a stereo, only my computer. I don't like putting a cd in my cd-rom drive and running it endlessly for weeks on end.... besides.. it's not a 10-100 Disk cd-changer anyway.
I even run my own Icecast server (don't ask.. it's private) since it's easier for me to store the stuff on the server and listen to it from there without bogging down my own harddrives with massive files.
Here's my problem. I would love to listen to streaming AIFF files... that would be fantastic.
Anyone know of any streaming servers or players? I have the bandwidth. Unfortunately.. that would mean either a huge multi-cd player/drive attached to my server or ripping them all and storing them on the harddrive space that I don't have.
Fortunately.. 2 things are changing fast... 1) Bandwidth is increasing and getting cheaper. 2) Storage medium is getting more dense and cheaper.
When the bandwidth and storage capabilities reach the point where I'll be happy... everyone will be throwing AIFF files back and forth... *shrug*
Until then? I'll keep listening to my 24/7 streaming MP3s... thanx.
Everyone who knew your parents before you were born realized that if they had any kids they would grow up to be a nerotic toad like you.
Umm... so they were right... maybe the naysayers about this project are wrong? I, for one, don't really care either way. The information they get out of completing the project will be interesting. Getting sucked up by a black hole or disappearing in a big bang would be interesting as well. I just hope it doesn't happen when I'm sleeping.. or is so fast that I miss it... (that would suck) Heh:>
Personally, I've been an AMD fan for a while now. (Yeah.. so I'm not much of a gamer.. so shoot me.)
Seriously though... with the release of the new Athalon and the changes it represents in the face of Intel's continuation of a mediocre genre of chips... I predict a long standing run of higher end AMD's as becoming the power house chips of the near future. No... I don't think they'll replace Intel... but with the architecture changes and the Alpha bus technology their future looks brighter than Intel's, if they can keep their grip on things.
Unless something happens in the next few years to change the current trend... I won't be buying anything but AMD chips for a long while. They're good, they're cheap and now they're faster than intel.
btw... the Athalon is in competition with the lower end Xeon chips... Last time I checked those were selling for Waaaaay more than the Athalon ever hoped... no?

IF (and ONLY if) I was a Gamer... I'm sure I would have bought more intel chips up till now. I admire AMD for choosing the Alpha bus chipset. For one.. it's superior to intel's. Two, it may provide cross compatibility with Alpha cpu's in the future. Three? As far as I know.. anyone can liscence the specs and create their own processor for it... I.E. Cyrix winchip etc...
How many other non-intel brands of chips can you put into a Slot I or Slot 2 MB?

AMD has always been cheaper...
Now they're looking to be cheaper AND Faster.
(Intel would have to sell it's Xeon cheaper than the K7 to have amd be more expensive and the k7 would still be faster. I.E. worth the price)

I am curious though.
