    I'm curious... I pay $75/mo for the DSL line from the local phone company and $50/mo for the ISP connection.

    This is 768K up and down......

    Do you pay extra for your digital subscriber line from the phone comapny.. or is that included?
    I don't understand how that works....

    Incedentally.... the dsl network is owned by the local phone
    company around here. To increase my up and down
    bandwidth.. I have to pay the phone company
    more money per month... the isp rates stay the same. Weird, huh?

    Let's see...
    128Kilobit streaming MP3 download 24/7
    (this is normal for me)

    128Kilobit / 8? = 16Kilobytes/sec
    16K/sec * 60sec = 960K/min
    960K/min * 60min= 57600K/hr = 56.25Megs per hour?
    57600K/hr * 24 = 1382400KiloBYTES/day = 1.350 GIG's per day
    1382400K/day * 31 = 42854400K/mo. = 40.86 Gig's
    Per Month

    That's not including ANY gaming/browsing/downloads/Mucking
    Etc. etc. etc. etc.....

    How much was that per extra 100M's?

    Yeah.. I pay a bit for 768K DSL... but it's worth it not to have to bother with junk like this...

    768K u/d Servers up to the individual.... No slow times of the day... *shrug* Who could ask for more?

    If my numbers are off... I do apologize... (I'm just a wee bit tired this morning)

    I consider myself lucky that I am not in a position
    where I'm required by a job or somesuch to HAVE to
    use M$ products.

    I don't know about anyone else.. but I send a polite reply to anyone that sends me e-mail in M$ only format, letting them know that I do not accept any e-mail or correspondance that's not
    in STANDARD format.
    Granted I may have missed a few things of importance
    but since I never read the junk... I wouldn't know.
    Yes.. I have translators.. but that's not my job.
    Anyone using the internet should use the standard
    protocals... If you can't figure out how to make
    Outlook Express send e-mail in ascii/mime format.
    You probably don't have anything to say that I care
    to hear. *shrug*

    M$ has screwed the public by crippling communications without
    using _their_ products.

    And what's this crap I hear about having to re-boot after installing
    a new driver? *sheesh* How'd they buffalo
    the public into accepting that crud?
    Oh yeah... the microshaft way IS the way computers
    are supposed to run.. *sigh* Sheeple.. a WHOLE bunch
    of sheeple... :/
    I DO use M$ on occasion.. but only when I'm forced to because of some
    proprietary M$ crap. Usually only once a month
    though.. so it's not really THAT painful...

    I like the quote I saw recently....
    'A computer without a Microsoft OS on it? Gee...
    that's like a choklit cake without mustard.'

    So how come there's no mention of what resources
    were still left available on the NT or Linux machine?

    I'd be quite surprised to find that the Linux box
    was using even close to all of it's resources...

    Wonder what would happen to the NT's stats if you
    opened up a copy of IE or Netscape and started browsing the net with it.

    We all know what would happen if you hit one of 'those' pages.
    heh.. How many pages did you say the linux box
    can serve up during the time it takes for nt to
    crash and re-boot?

    Reminds me of a couple of guys out at the lake here.
    They all have large boats.. but blown engines.. the works....
    One guy only has a 454 non-blown, non stroked engine.
    He's not quite as fast as the other boats...
    but He's put an awful lot of extra miles on his
    while the other guys had theirs in the shop for repairs.

    Personally I'll never use M$ anything for business.

    I don't have time to stop and fix something every other day. *shrug*

    Get in, do the maintenence, get out. Server crashes SUCK!

    It comes down to the degredation of thought when
    using a computer.

    Microsoft and Apple have created an environment that
    pretty much allows someone to use a computer without
    thinking. Of course they get what they think for.

    In reality... If a user has never used a computer before
    it's easier for them to learn Linux and much less painful
    in the long run than if they have been corrupted
    by Microshaft or Apple.

    It's not that Linux is 'Too Hard' to learn... it's that
    it's different than the pre-processed baby food pc companies
    have been feeding them and calling good.
    It's better. Ok.. so it's not as polished and supported.
    That's changing quickly and I for one am glad to see
    the slow migration away from the 'other' OS's....
    I'd like to see the bsd's and such have as much interest as well.


    I'll even bet that if you fed Gates some sodium
    pentathol that he would admit that his OS is
    a huge ball of garbage code that should be flushed.

    There's the right way to do things... and then there's the
    Microsoft/Apple way to do things.

    Fortunately there are more right ways to do things
    than wrong ways.


    (I love this quote) 'A computer without Microsoft,

    The point is that with a standard configuration with no keyboard and no video card does not allow
    you to re-configure the bios without plugging
    both the keyboard and a videocard in and attaching a monitor.

    The weasel seems to be an interesting work around.
    I wish them luck. :P

    just some (non-alien) life form that decided to create us one day.

    In an infinite uinverse your statistics are pretty much insignificant.

    2#.) Since when has god said anything to anyone? Or does
    he appear to you on occasion to give you stock tips?

    3#.) Who said Seti is looking for communications?
    ANY non-natural event could be an indication of ETI.

    4#.) Unless there is some way to 'warp' or 'fold-space'
    or travel 'faster-than-light', it really doesn't
    make a difference if there's ETI or not. Think about it.

    My advice:
    1. Get a life.
    2. Read anything you can get your hands on.
    3. Find something you like and let it kill you.

    That's an interesting point...
    Being able to take on more rendering projects would increase his pay... however...

    What renders faster? an Empty-box (NT)
    Or a Linux-box?

    IS Linux faster rendering than NT?
    I've never done any myself. (nor have I used NT)
    Does only M$ stuff run the rendering software He uses?
    I would be most curious to find out.

    I would assume (yeah, dangerous I know) that he would
    be able to get the same savings and speed by running
    Linux as his rendering box. Not to mention how much more
    he would be able to take on after overclocking it at that point.

    Is it possible that Microsoft is more admitting to their
    inferiority overseas.. due (in part) to the Europeans being
    less tolearant and more observant.
    Do they believe that (since we speak US English) we'll not hear about what they do over there?

    OR

    Are these Microsoft reps speaking english at these conventions? and if not... do they understand what they are saying or are they just reading it? heh.. makes you wonder who writes the speeches if they don't understand it.

    I've been hearing this same argument for years...
    It all comes down to case design... I use cheap cases... I.E. the air flow is not as well planned
    as some of the other nice cases I've had the opportunity to drool over in the stores.

    Personally.. I never put the covers on my 'puters either. Yes.. you do have to seperate the harddri ves a bit as they tend to heat up a little more
    The reason I don't put the cover on is because my chip is overclocked... With the cover on the kernel barfs horribly after about 8 minutes.. and I can feel the heat of the cpu from the OUTSIDE of the case where it's located. BAD BAD BAD...

    Yeah.. I could go with a better fan or something.. but it runs just fine as it is... It's quiet and since it's 2 1/2' from my head when I sleep.. that's a good thing.

    I for one would have preferred to have had to pay more for hardware in the last few years than been forced to watch the Microshaft revolution.

    Because they are big... the market for hardware has been cheap of late.

    If they had not been big... we would have a better OS in the mass market's mindset... *shrug*

    Microshaft will never be able to "crush" Linux... nor do to it the same as Java and OS/2...
    It just won't happen...

    Personally.. I don't care one way or the other what other people use... I'll use Linux because it works the way _I_ want it to... Not because a commercial says so... (though I wouldn't mind seeing Tux on TV.. heh.. 'course I don't watch TV either) or some big Corporation says so.



    When the smoke clears.. I'll still be using it.

    It was quite interesting to read the accounts of others' experiences in High School.
    I've been out of the education scene for almost ten
    years now and have just recently re-entered it.

    Yes..... High School sucked... It's only now that I realize
    that the majority of the things I did that were so bizarre and 'out-there'
    were to fit in with other kids.
    Trying to be normal. Well.. I'm NOT normal and never will be normal.
    I'm ok with it now and it doesn't bother me in the slightest any more
    but I can remember many times when it seemed as if the whole world was
    against me.

    Since I've entered college it's been interesting. I still don't
    fit in... but I can at least count on both hands the number of times
    I have NOT gotten the feeling that everyone around me was slow.
    I'd say that's pretty dang good for one semester. Can't wait for the next.

    The main reason I enjoy the internet so much is that it allows me to go outside my physical location and find others who are on the same level as I. Others who need not have me type a full ten sentances because they understand me
    in the first 5 words.
    People who are NOT negative or narrow minded, who can appreciate
    your ideas and actually be of some help in times of stress, etc.
    In light of what our system has become, when it comes to it's
    treatment of children, they are failing dismally.
    I cannot belive what poor quality (mentally and socially) students are entering the college in this day and age.
    Many of it being a direct result of the societal conditions they've been subjected to, the last few years, in our public school system.

    The internet provides a larger community for us to search out those who would help us see that we are in fact the norm. It is society's game that's the sham. Pity that many of us learn that lesson late, and usually painfully at that.

    It's a matter of Choice.

    IF there were several varieties of Losedoze
    on the market and it was the only viable
    OS, I"m sure that my choice wouldn't be the same
    as most other's choice; yet it would be MY choice!

    I, for one, am grateful there are so many choices out there in the world of Linux distribution land.

    I may never, EVER, use another distribution other than the one I currently use now.
    I WILL defend, to the death, my right to choose another if I like.

    Don't close doors because you think _I_ might not like what you are supposing MIGHT be behind it.
    There are enough people in the world doing that already and I find it cramping my life at every turn.

    Frankly, I've always wanted to move my lab into a silo like that.
    Gotta admit that I really enjoy concrete holes in the ground. Definitely would have to have access though.

    As for the neutron bomb and rotting corpses? Just figure that if you wait long enough... it won't smell so bad and there won't be any squishy stuff to clean up.

    How come the techie said that a crashed program doesn't pull down an entire NT machine?

    Ok... right off.. I've never used Oracle on any platform.
    I'd just like to point out something that I believe a few of you might have missed.

    It seems that Oracle did an inventory of their Corp. Network and found 1400+ Linux machines.
    I believe they made a statement to the effect that
    they were going full bore on linux support.

    Considering how many of their employees run Linux.
    I don't think they're going to stop support for Oracle, any time soon.

    Then again... what do _I_ know?

    Every computer company in the whole industry does not know how to do bussiness other then
    microsoft. Microsoft is the only company trying to make great products and doing great bussiness deals while the other companies just whine.

    M$ was founded by Bill Gates. Lil' Willy is a ruthless businessman who does not mind being unethical to get what he wants... i.e. $$$$
    They don't sit around in Redmond and have discussions like: "gee... what can we do that will make our customers get a warm fuzzy feeling in their tummies as they use our 'wonderful' products."

    Trust me... they are in the business of making money. If they can sell you an upgrade to fix their mistakes in the previous version, they are accomplishing this. M$ has created an entire technical support industry who's only job is to keep their buggy OS's running. They don't care about you 'Anonymous Coward', they care about the $$ you throw at them.

    I don't hate M$. I use my 95 machine as a night-light and an arbitrary distributed.net keycracker(allbeit a very slow one).

    Linux will become a viable desktop OS. Maybe not THE Desktop OS, but then, that's not really important. What's important is that the power and flexibility will always be there, and those who wish to utilize tools to maximize their potential and accomplish their goals, will use Linux when it comes to computers.

    Windoze whatever will always be a viable OS for the sheeple (i.e. You.) who believe everything they hear on tv and read in the paper. It will probably never die. (there are an awful lot of people making money off of the fact that it's a piece of junk)

    Linux only continues to get better and better. *shrug* Watch and see.
