  1. This only hurts Debian. on Debian Removes Binary-only Firmware From Kernel · · Score: 1, Informative

Although removing any possible licensing issues is a good thing, this will only hurt Debian. People simply expect their hardware to work, without having to jump through massive hoops. Requiring full source code only makes certain hardware harder to get working, and does not contribute to the adoption of Linux. Now that RedHat is mostly focusing on the enterprise market, there has to be another distro to take its place (Fedora is still in its infancy), and Debian will soon not become that distro.

  2. Wow. on Supreme Court Rules Against Community Telcos · · Score: 3, Interesting

This opens up a bunch of things now. Does this mean I can't let people share my wireless connection, for instance, without them breathing down my neck? The decision means total support for the local monopoly, which is sad indeed.

  4. Will the US still have jobs? on Australia To Adopt U.S.-Style Copyright Laws · · Score: 0

With globalization, it becomes cheaper to import goods rather than export our own. Will this result in eventually having no jobs of our own domestically? I shudder to think what would happen if this was the case.

  5. This is nuts. on Five PC Vendors Face Patent Lawsuit · · Score: 4, Interesting

I think what would help more than patent reform though is tort reform. For one, making the losing party pay is a start. Also, finding a way to reduce lawsuits or using arbitration more often will contribute significantly. Reforming the patent system would be nice too though.

  6. US adoption on Samsung Puts Satellite TV in Cell Phones · · Score: 1

What changes would be needed to get it working in the US, and popular? Would a different band need to be used for satelite transmissions? This would be neat if the kinks are worked out to make it global.

  7. More and more stereotyping on BBC Links Linux To MyDoom · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why can't we just all get along? I'm serious. The actions of the MyDoom creators are not indicitive of the actions or opinions of the rest of the community. To say otherwise would be the same as being what you're against. I would have expected better from the BBC, but whatever.

  8. It's the 9th Circuit on Court to Hear Landmark P2P Case · · Score: 4, Insightful

We probably shouldn't cheer any victory in the appeals court. The 9th Circuit is the most overturned court ever, and the Supreme Court will probably overturn the decision made here. Of course, they might overturn it in the P2P services' favor if the 9th Circuit rules against them. Either way, we should be prepared.

  9. Plausible, but... on Methane Bubbles Could Sink Ships · · Score: 1, Interesting

  10. An idea that really wasn't ready for prime time on Farewell To The Concorde · · Score: 3, Insightful

The Concorde really wasn't ready for prime time. With tickets starting at around $6000, fast travel to Europe was only affordable by the rich and by those whose employers would pay for it. Not to mention that you could only fly out of New York and Washington, DC to London and Paris. The technology was impressive for its time though, and I hope another attempt is made at high-speed air travel, knowing the problems with the Concorde.

  11. Useful for the UN Weapons Inspectors on Radiation Detection Wrist Watch · · Score: 5, Interesting

Actually, I installed the nVidia binary-only drivers recently onto my 450 MHz Linux/Windows 2000 box, and X runs way faster now. Of course it takes longer initially to start but once that happens it runs faster than I've ever gotten X to run (I'm using FVWM95 at the moment because I don't have the bandwidth to download KDE).

Once I download and install KDE it might slow a bit but the difference has been so amazing under FVWM95 that the slowdown might not be significant.

How much demand is there for fixed wireless? I've been considering starting a wireless ISP that would serve my local area, and I was thinking that no one would be willing to pay more money to switch from cable or DSL to wireless. This is what could have been the problem.

Maybe if AT&T deployed only in rural areas...

  18. Re:Armchair Bitching on Congress Plans DMCA Sequel: The SSSCA · · Score: 2

I happen to be an optimistic person and won't give up easily. The worst thing in a situation like this is to become pessimistic and start thinking negative thoughts. I wasn't recommending that writing your Congressman should be the only option. Protests could be done if necessary, like the one that got Dmitri Sklyarov bailed out of jail. In all, there is a way to fight this, we just need to figure out the right way.

Unfortunately, American coders/readers will have to fight this on their own. I'm American, and happen to care and willing to help however I can, but if all the other American Slashdot readers can't or won't take the time to actually do something about it, then it's not worth fighting at all. Feel free to laugh at us if it gets passed :(

Would Congressmen listen to teenagers who aren't registered to vote yet? Or do they listen to adults? If they do in fact listen it'll go a long way. At this moment I'm preparing to write a letter to my senators, but unsure if they'll actually listen to me, a 16 year old male from CA.

  21. Re:"Once more unto the breach, my friends." on Congress Plans DMCA Sequel: The SSSCA · · Score: 4, Insightful

Does the bill have any provisions for letting you uninstall the digital rights management software? Or will it be embedded in hardware, making it impossible to bypass? It depends on how it's implemented, if it was actually written correctly it could be something we don't have to really worry about.

But seriously, I bet 90% of people out there would not care if they heard of this bill. They'd go "I'm not a music pirate; I can go through a little extra hassle if I get to pay less for my music CD" or something similar. We need to give them something that'll make them care, maybe some piece of software that refuses to work if digital rights management is being used on their systems. In any case, something must be done, and now.

  22. Armchair Bitching on Congress Plans DMCA Sequel: The SSSCA · · Score: 5, Insightful

This just seems like another opportunity for Slashdotter to bitch and moan, without actually doing anything to help. If this happens again the law would actually pass, and we'd all be screwed.

Is Hollings going to be reelected in November? For those living in South Carolina, write him, saying that you will not reelect him if the law passes. A delegation should also go to Congress and show them how digital rights management, especially SDMI, is a pain in the ass (even if you're using Windows and approved software).

I'm just sick and tired of everyone here being complacent and not doing anything useful to put a stop to stuff like this.

If Russia doesn't know already about Sklyarov's plight, they'll know soon, and they will demand justice too and put some political pressure on the US.

Not to mention that he hasn't had a bail hearing yet or has even been expedited to California. I'm just glad the Cold War is over, or we'd see something far worse happen.

If you have for-profit media, you're gonna have corruption and a generally biased viewpoint when it comes to news, etc. If media was non-profit, those things may still exist, but to a lesser extent. Bias would be less evident and the media would try harder to be objective when it comes to reporting stories. Heck, they might even play better music in the process.
