But why cant programmers earn as much as producers and managers? Its no longer unskilled labour we are providing, programming is a highly skilled profession and it takes just as much brainpower and time as management. I for one am hoping to stay a programmer for life (because i love doing it) but it seems very unfair that i cant get paid as much as a manager/producer for contributing to an important part of the project.
The developers are different, the publisher is different, the prices, money value heck the economy is different. In europe the currency is different now. All in all, if you think about it it is still gamestops responsibility to honour them but they could argue that its too old or it was for a completely different game. My guess? Its just a bunch of stories centered around DNF's release, the lifetime achievement vaporware award winner is about to ship, its a big moment.
Science makes beautiful things, Artists create beautiful things. The rest are management and they just make a lot of money somehow... no justice in the world.
They dont just want one to detect radiation, they want one to accurately tell them how much radiation is actually present. They should also know exactly how much radiation is harmful over what period of time. A faulty counter or even poor knowledge of radiation can be just as harmful by underestimating the amount of radiation than by overestimating the amount of radiation and displacing your life / spreading panic among everyone else.
I am obviously going to build my jetpack. It should give me enough altitude incase you know i dont get caught up in the clouds myself (and looking at my pron collection its not likely). So I am going to jetpack up and grab on to one of those bible thumpers legs (hopefully it'll have a skirt on it which would be a great inflight movie) and totally get into like... heaven or whatever.
Hats are not DLC! They are cosmetic, you can get them in other ways (in TF2 at least, also crafting allows you to select your hat) and things like that. DLC is actual game content that you cant play (maps, modes, singleplayer campaigns) that effectively lock you out of a few hours of gameplay. I lose it when people point to the hats and say paid DLC. I think all new weapons in TF2 are (at least supposed to be) the equivalent usefulness of the stock weapons and using them just has a different playstyle rather than an obvious advantage.
And yea valve really does deserve to get away with whatever they want. Its prolly cos they are pretty awesome that a few slipups here and there are overlooked. L4D 2s early release is the only one i would say that actually seems like a genuine messup but its all overlooked. Cos they are awesome.
Valve released survivor mode, crash course and sacrifice for L4D, a lot of people were pissed off when L4D2 was announced so close to L4D1 but eventually everyone came around and valve kept its promise of releasing content for L4D. They even flew the community members who were leading the protest to their studio to playtest L4D2 and understand why it had to be a sequel and not an expansion.
All their DLC's are free for all platforms except where the platform owner (microsoft) insists they be paid. The only thing you could be referring to could be the tf2 hats which, and i would like to emphasize this point, do NOT lock you out of content from TF2, do NOT give you any additional advantages over other non paying players, and are available to all players without paying provided they can earn them by finding them in game. They innovate, they give massive discounts on steam, they give out amazing videos (tf2 meet the team, portal 2 investment opportunities), support independent developers (narb drop, tag, dota). They are an awesome company and they make amazing games.
Valve does Gods work imho so I would not dismiss this out of turn. He is naturally talking about multiplayer games because in single player games you effectively pay for the content so your entire user experience is crafted by the company using artists etc so in that case you charge what it cost you to make and think up and then some. Now in multiplayer games, the community adds a significant portion of the value to the final product so it could be argued that it makes sense that they be rewarded for adding value to a product (not unlike modders who can sell their maps on the starcraft 2 map store thingie).
In an MMORPG you ARE rewarded for being a better community member when you join groups, raids etc allowing you to unlock better gear and levelup faster. This does not result in monetary gain but most mmo's have some kind of conversion between in game benefits and real world money (not gold farmers, more like purchasable experience scrolls and the like). So in some ways being a better community player already rewards you (at least in theory, by design). Should the base game be cheaper for better community members? I dont think so. Should being a team player/community positive give you in game rewards that are otherwise purchasable with RL cash? Yea that sounds decent.
Its vvvvvvvery interesting he mentions Dota 2 here. First because its good to hear some news about it cos I am waiting on it, and secondly because DotA (the original wc3) has a community that WILL bite your head off the instant you make a mistake in game or say something stupid in people. For some reason DotA brings out the worst in people.
Im actually surprised about this, this is the first I am hearing about it. I live in India and I didn't hear squat even though I don't read papers end to end an article like this on the first few pages would have caught my eye. Now that I search through our national dailies I still cant find it. Looks like they pushed it through on the quiet.
If you have watched the trailer or the gameplay video you would not be saying something daft like this. The whole game is plot and not action driven, the facial expressions are.... because theres no better phrase.. fking A, they are so good they are an actual gameplay element here. You need to watch peoples facial expressions for clues of guilt etc. It quite likely revolves around a massive story presented through lifelike cutscenes with GTA like free roaming. Nothing like HL2.
From TFA: The airport, roughly 150 square meters (over 1,600 square feet), is breathtaking to behold. But the Brauns’ masterpiece is even more than an autonomous feast for the eyes: it’s interactive. Visitors can push buttons on the railing surrounding the model airport to induce up to 11 different programmed scenarios. A visitor who pushes the button labeled “Fire incident” will see smoke begin to billow out of a house, and then actual flames. The fire house will sound the alarm and begin flashing its lights. Moments later the fire brigade–3-4 vehicles located randomly about the airport–will turn on their lights and start heading towards the fire. At intersections the fire engines will sound their horns and cars will yield the right of way. Meanwhile the fire grows bigger! After the fire engines converge on the burning house the PC decides whether or not the fire has been successfully put out. If not, another alarm is sounded and additional fire engines (up to 35!) from the neighborhood come to the rescue.
AI programming along with all the complicated physical inputs too. Amazing
Yes the whole thing doesn't make any sense. if you use any other notation f(1) = 5. the whole "problem" falls apart. he had to use the = sign and the problem is retarded.
A friend of mine was interviewing for a php position was asked the following apparently no brainer question.
"if 1 = 5, 2= 25 3 = 125 4 = 625 what is 5 = ?"
naturally he calculated out the fifth power of 5 as his answer and presented it. The interviewer put on a smug smile and declared the answer was '1' because he already stated that 1=5 (which was supposed to be cumulative or something). I would have laughed my head off at the interviewer and walked out but my friend was polite enough to complete it.
Because although id makes great graphics they do not have things like visual design and the 'soft skills' that make great video games (think portal 2's voice acting and animation). So they always score in the technical department. Unfortunately the whole graphics curve is leveling off now as we reach photorealistic games and graphics no longer impress anyone. Also from what I am reading RAGE uses OpenGL? Whops there goes the whole hardware tessellation from directX 11. So really this game will bring nothing to the table unless the gameplay is superb or the engine itself is easy to use (for making other games, not just modding).
This was more of a comment on NASA and the US and not on this particular satellite mission. What I actually was thinking of when i wrote it was the voyager craft.
I am not an American, but I have seen both the blue pearl image and the pale blue dot image. I have read about how long these projects have run and the astounding quality of the instruments that must be on satellites like these along with the massive foresight it must have taken at launch time to make them relevant decades later. You can criticize the USA all you want for their wars, and I have heard some harsh criticism of NASA too but the most astounding images and discoveries have always come from the here because they are on the pinnacle of space exploration. The world would be a lot less interesting if it wasn't for them.
I wouldn't use it as an indie developer. And understanding a whole new engine, architecture, language, workflow is a huge investment that i would like to have the possibility of getting back in $$. Its a huge exposure yes, source level access to a big name engine is quite something but if you want people to use it you need to dangle the carrot in front of them to get them to become active members of the community. Less work for studios trying to work on the engine to train their staff if they have done indie work on it and with a bigger community.
This is kind of pointless. You can release everything but if you don't have a license to release a commercial games for independent developers no indie developer is going to take the trouble of using your engine. To be a great engine you need to have widespread acceptance, for that you need studios to use your engine. For studios to use your engine you need to have the people walking in for interviews use it. For those to use it your forums and community need to be abuzz with help and praise for your engine (because lets face it, community is run by indies and a few studio mods). And Indies will not touch an engine which does not have a commercial license available. The best you get will be some hobbyist or student trying it out a bit but for widespread adoption, get a nice cheap commercial indie license.

I would blame a lot of the slashdotters for wanting to see if tfa had a picture of the oz math 22 year old genius. Facebook says shes alright ;)

Obviously I removed my token.
You should apply for sony's online security team.

I dont know what this song has to do with the story but its a really good son. So half of you all mod parent off topic, other half mod him informative

when is the world going to move on from counterstrike!?!!?
a very good point. But if you are testing interview candidates about how they would react to idiotic superiors you already have serious problems.

Personally the trailer was disappointing.

Could you elaborate or point to articles about this please? I am not challenging your stand but would simply like to read more. Thanks.
