I had to lookup what wombles was and for those who dont want to take the trouble:

The Wombles are fictional pointy-nosed, furry creatures that live in burrows, where they help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in useful and ingenious ways. Wombles were created by author Elisabeth Beresford, originally appearing in a series of children's novels from 1968. Although Wombles supposedly live in every country in the world, the stories are concerned with the life of the inhabitants of the burrow on Wimbledon Common in London, England.

I've gone above and beyond the call of duty a few times to put something that i felt would add a lot to a game/level. I've always felt a small feedback loop exists between the gamedesigners and the programming team where the programming team will suddenly think of a tweak, implement it and show it to the designer. Usually its something small that takes very little coding but has a noticable effect on the feel of the game. Im not sure how often it happens but i've seen it a few times.

The level design and artwork goes art director -(words)-> concept artist ->(image)> 3dArtist/texturer etc.
you can send the concept image to a different team and expect a near spec output. But try explaining what kind of concept art you are looking for using a requirement spec even without images and you'll see what I mean. Having said that i think most studios retain a few concept artists to send concepts abroad where the bulk of the 3d artwork is done.

You cant move coding offshore for game development. You can do it for generic software/website/enterprise system which is brain dead boiler plate coding for some huge bank that they can milk for maintenance contracts. But making a game requires very rapid prototyping, a huge variety of technical skills, creativity and honestly? a bit of love. Knowing what you are making and being passionate about it will be lost when transferring code oversees where there are no designers and no beta testers to fix it. How can u explain a level or gameplay mechanic through a requierment spec?

India is already a source for artwork for games and film but programming? no way. I know, ive looked for jobs here (a lot of art studios) and there are very few end to end game studios.

When I learnt how to program I couldn't see any other use for it except to make games. And soon as I had the opportunity I went for it. Now of course I am a little more knowledgeable. I have a few friends who are working for some huge banks doing java code and earning buckets of monies, another few in web development and a few others scattered here and there but im pretty happy to be a Game programmer. Its not the best way to learn but it might be the best way to get one interested in programming.

On topic, I would like to see if people who arent good at math also cant code.

  15. Anyone else? on New Technique To Help Develop MMORPG Content? · · Score: 1

    Anyone else find tfa stupid?

“For example,” Roberts says, “you could develop a program to steer players to relevant content. Because it is a data-driven modeling approach, it could be done on a grand scale with minimum input from game designers.”

They are saying this as if game designers regularly sit on servers telling users where to go, they are also implying the game will suggest where the players will 'go'. I dont see how this is related in anyway to developing new mmo content.

One interesting element of these findings is that the achievements that are highly correlated – or part of the same clique – do not necessarily have any obvious connection. For example, an achievement dealing with a character’s prowess in unarmed combat is highly correlated to the achievement badge associated with world travel – even though there is no clear link between the two badges to the outside observer.

Here they admit some correlations dont make sense so all they are saying is these achievements seem to be done by users together. Is this what passes for a 'new technique' and 'research' now? it looks like something from steam stats could do pretty much all of this
