If you wan't to try something fancy, you can have overlapping maps of various scales and use PostGIS to select the correct map
PostGIS adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL object-relational database. In effect, PostGIS "spatially enables" the PostgreSQL server, allowing it to be used as a backend spatial database for geographic information systems (GIS), much like ESRI's SDE or Oracle's Spatial extension. PostGIS follows the OpenGIS "Simple Features Specification for SQL" and will be submitted for compliance testing at version 1.0.
PostGIS has been developed by Refractions Research Inc as a research project in spatial database technology. PostGIS is released under the GNU General Public License. We intend to continue development as time and resources permit. This'd be great, ALL you need to do is get some standards agreed and from then on you'd only need 1 remote for you PC. I could cat/dev/bluetooth/remote and microsoft could DirectRemote it.
Now anyone know how to get the TV and Sound card manufactures to agree on a standard?
COM provides a 'simple?' interfaceing mechanism and a good way to ensure you applications are encapsulated.
C++ is too complex to interface genericly and it probably wouldn't work that well with other languages (lack of closure type support in C++ also provides some problems)
Java already has a COM type framework I'm not sure why more prople don't use it for non-java applications, there must be some reason.
COM style models provide a simple interfacing method the.NET framework is 'just' a revision of COM, with versioning support, profiling and other things that would have been nice from the start.
There's CORBA but again no-one seems to use it for generall applications (too heavy, and licensing issues?)
The point of COM is that it provides a dynamic framework for you to build components in and provides enough flexability to be easly implementable in most languages. I wouldn't use COM for static development!

I believe that the UK investigation started decided that it was the chemicals that the UK and US pumped there troops full of that caused gulfwar syndrom.
