    My pockets have been picked since I started working to fight useless wars and fund an enormous, expensive and increasingly ineffective military. Not to mention the soaring spending rates on police agencies from local to Federal which reduce my freedoms.

    The money being spent on Volt subsidies is nothing compared to handouts to corn farmers. It's a pittance compared to money we just hand over to other nations.

    As wealth flows upward and the middle class shrinks in size and spending power, artists must accept that that these changes affect them as well. The Middle Class is the real reason we have such a large artistic community. I'm thinking that if this social change does not reverse that artists will be relegated to patronage and the former middle class will cease caring about art as they increasingly need to spend their money on necessities over srtistic luxuries.

    Hardly a good analogy. Your end users pay your bills, you must listen to them or you go out of business. If the posters don't like how you provide your content, they'll get content from someone else.

    Your business model is not protected by law, or rather, it should not be protected by law.

    It's not a failure because the majority of mobile device users haven't embrace it. I have DVD drive on my Thinkpad. I've used it maybe twice in three years. All my data comes to me over the wire instead of on dead dinosaur media. Burn CDs? Hello, iPod?

    While the touchpad on our Eeepc 1005HA is indeed annoying, a $15 mini wireless mouse cleaned that up. The low vertical resolution is just part of the packaging if you want a physically small device. We run browsers full screen and it's great. I dunno what the boot time is, we've only booted it a few times. Hibernate works great and it resumes in seconds with the OEM XP installation.

    I think you are whinging about a device not designed for you.

    California can't stop this as the Federal government decides to redistribute their wealth to the fly-over areas. Cali only has their reps in the legislature to fight that.

    By and large the coastal states are taxed at the Federal level so that up to 40% of those tax receipts can be gifted to the bootstrappy heartland states.

    No whingefest about mean old taxes is complete without a mention of this fact.

    My own state only gets 60 cents spent on it for every dollar we contribute. And that includes the sub bases!

    Indeed. After McCain's douchey 'concession speech' in which he practically demanded that Obama act in a bipartisan manner, Obama tried too hard at bipartisanship. He should have known that the Republicans would never meet him half way. After several months of Democrats giving concessions to Republicans re: health care, and several months of the Republicans not giving concessions, it's about time the Democrats played politics the way the Republican-majority Congress did in the 90's and most of the 00's. No need to turn into total douches, but the Dems really need to stand up to the idiocy coming from the angry (fr)right(end) wing. What are these people so scared of anyway? :P

    The brain damaged failures known as 'federal funding for faith-based medicine' and 'abstinence only sex educaitons' my trollrific friend :)

    He's also saving us money by telling the AG to not prosecute pot users in states that make such use legal. I do wish he'd pull every US soldier and asset out of the ME immediately, but military people who know better than I say that would be a bad idea.

    I develop J2EE applications on a Windows machine as I prefer the snappier UI to X. My code runs, with no modifications, on Windows (duh), AIX, Linux and Linux running on zSeries platform. We have never needed to call platform-specific functions for our work as these are business applications. There is something really cool about using the development tool to push the same EAR to applications servers on several different platforms all from within the dev tool. Now the dev tool itself is a resource hog but my boss doesn't mind spending a few hundred dollars to max out memory and ensure we have speedy processors in our dev machines.

    I used VB.NET in a few classes I took last year for my Masters degree. It is a nice environment to work in, even the 'free' student-grade version. It may even be better than the eclipse-based environment I use at work. My only complaint was that we had to use VB as I dislike BASIC syntax.

    But single-species tree cultivation is not forest! Not even close. It's cultivation which does not tolerate all the other aspects of a forest ecosystem. You can't really compare commercially farmed trees to an actual forest. It's disingenuous.
