It does matter.
Games are very limited compared to real 3d environments. Many games you play have no realtime light rendering, and simulate them by texturing.
For example, games like doom3 need vertex shaders, that older chips like geforce2 do not provide.
If you think that max payne is as realistic as a game can be, you must think that star wars: a new hope was the most realistic movie ever!!
(not even in movies do we have enough realism, mostly because of lack of hardware, much less in real time games, that could be much improved)
Back in the day I played Test Drive III, I thought it was as good as 3d would need to be, and my s3 trio 64 was the last video card i would ever need.
Just because it is a pain to learn, it does not mean that you accomplish anything once yo do it. I am yet to find an experienced vi user as fast as I am (not a fast typist, nor an experienced joe user) at editing text.
It is just painful to see them struggle through complicated keystrokes, and modes.
You are not wrong, although vi might beat edlin all the way, it is not suited for modern computers.
Even experienced people using vi are far less eficient than joe & I are at simple task as editing a config file. vi does look as a nice try, but others have succeded in making a fast, powerful editor, yet much easier to learn. WordStar-like editors, like TP4, beat vi all the way, and joe's shortcuts are really useful and easy to learn.
Let's face it, nobody wants to spend more than 10 minutes learning how to use a text editor, time must be spent thinking about your code, not the tool you use.
I think the only reason why vi is still used is that old timers promote its use by not installing a good editor in their systems, while vi is found on every system.
I remember typing salshdot.org (almost certain taht was the exact spelling), and entering slashdot, plus a framed banner at the bottom.
Cant find it now.
What ever happened to it??
I live in Uruguay, and about ten years ago some guy had a car that could do short ranges around 20-30 kilometers.
All I can remember is that the principle that it used was fairly simple, but the guy didnt get any funding to develop the idea.

License to Sit

Paying to sit in a public place is nothing strange. It is paying $0 to go, and $x to sit.
If you go to a paid event, in many cases you have the option to pay $y to enter, and $y+x to enter, and have a nicce seat.
I can see how unexpected that can be.
>The Skittles game described above is a zero-sum >game: Some number of Skittles come into the room >(with the teacher) and the same number of >Skittles leave the room (with the teacher and >the kids). Note that the teacher is part of the game.
Wrong!!
The teacher is _not_ part of the game. The only reason why he is part of the game are the laws of physics.
What makes the teacher "play" is that Skittles have to be brought by someone, but if they were rewarded with, say, a rock from the floor, the teacher would not be playing, and on your scheme, the floor would be, but the game woul remain the same. Zero-sum games have nothing to do with conserving resources, it is about gain and loss, I do not think the teacher feels he has gained anything because he has more Skittles than if the kids were smarter. Maybe he now thinks that he is better than them, but that would be sad..
I don't think so, moderators should not mod something up or down according to whether it is true or justified.
The whole idea of the moderation system is to filter trolls and to avoid flamewars, while keeping what is relevant.
A moderator should mod something up if he thinks that the post was relevant to him, and not just an urge from someone to get some attention, as this clearly was. To filter the true from the wrong goes beyond the power of a slashdot reader.
Read again.
The guy says that it is possible to increase the file size without a better quality, that means _decreasing_ the compression ratio.
In fact, that's something that is not very clear, Fraunhoffer people say that 128kbps is enough, but what about 196kbps? is it noticeably better?
Apart from that, the particular codec might be designed to achieve 128kbs quality and nothing more than that, but that is another story.
Anyway, I think that if we are going to change formats, a free standard is the way to go.
In fact, ParallelGraphics, the only company still developing a VRML plugin for Windows, has extended the use of textures to include Flash, they still do not provide interactivity, but I think that is the way towards which it goes.
"One of the biggest problems all around is when a bunch of idiots elect a corrupt moron "...
"creating a military dictatorship.... and so on. "
Stop dreaming. Military dictatorships never happen without foreign support. As an example, Pinochet (as in Chiles dictator in the 70s and 80s) was supported by the Kissinger people to help get rid of "communist" Allende, the one that the people had elected. Same thing happened in Brazil, and Argentina, the latter of which supported too the dictatorship in my country, Uruguay.
If South America is not good enough... do you remember Saddam Hussein?? Where do you think he got money to get his weapons, once intended to be used against Iran??
I do not think you should come here educate us,
better educate your CIA people and make them mind their own bussiness.
Toshiba satellite laptops claim to have 1600x1200 in a 15 inches display, that must scale nicely, at least if you want 800x600.
83 cubic centimeters?
It does matter.

Things change.
Gives a whole new meaning to "computer bug" though, doesnt it?
Does not. Computer bugs were actually bugs that used to eat wires in early computers, that's why they are called "bugs".
That is sooooo wrong.

Someone posted something about using KDE instead of GNome, and got moderated to -1, Flamebait, so now I am not sure asking...
Is there a way to get nice fonts, even if it is not GNome, does KDE/Konqueror render antialiased fonts with X11 4.02??
