It's because of two reasons: hospital care is perceived as "free" due to insurance or governmental aid and because people don't get regular check-ups. It's like taxes, we'd be more offended about the taxes they take from us if we had to pay our annual federal and state taxes via a check every year...so we could see the actual amount and feel the pain. Medical insurance needs to be overhauled as does the drug industry (which may actually mean the FDA). It's a shame the hospital's down...problems like this are going to become more prevalent as SCADA moves to Windows... Sorry for the smattering of thoughts but I woke up a few minutes ago and to quote Cookie Monster, "me sleepy and me need cookie."

Any algorithm would be nice, probably more a calculation of free space between the spheres but I never put much thought into it.

As an ardent environmentalist with a BS in Environmental Science, I am also a realist and understand we need to use what we have while we forge ahead in search of what will power our future. I also have not seen conclusive proof for or against anthropogenic global warming and doubt it will ever be published, simply because the world we live in is too complex and the span of time we look at it is too short. Elrous0 was correct in stating this "dilemma" is man-caused for nefarious reasons (e.g. money, power, fame, all the above, etc.). I think a lot of environmentalists and people in my field simply want us to live in a manner that doesn't our environment up (e.g. Love Canal is a prime example of the damage that can be done through ignorance or corruption). I think almost every environmental problem boiled down to either laziness on the part of the corporation/government/individual or greed...it's ironic the pseudo-environmentalists are doing their deeds for largely the same reasons.

  16. Re:Resolution on NRO Declassifies KH-9 Satellite · · Score: 0

Being able to read a newspaper from space is a Cold-War era urban legend. Commercial space-based imagers (e.g. Quickbird) have ~60cm resolution, one can argue they are several generations behind what the US Intelligence agencies have but even if one were to get 6cm resolution they still couldn't read a newspaper. You say you could se blocks of colors on a newspaper in 1971 seems to me to be incredible...that would imply a resolution of less than a few centimeters which I doubt anyone has in space. I'd bet the image you saw was either from an air-breathing imager (e.g. U-2 or another plane) or from a guy on an adjacent rooftop.

Shooting down satellites from a conventional F-15 using an ASM-135 ASAT missile was first done back in 1985 so no need to increase the complexity (e.g. boost speed to mach 20).
