    Well I guess I am just as "confused" as the other
    guy, but I didn't spend time hanging out in 2600.
    In fact, I've been standing outside, looking in at
    crackers and hackers, and I can't tell you the
    difference.

    For all the good hackers that are worried that
    they will be confused with eviiiiiiil crackers,
    here's an idea! There are "good hackers" and
    "evil hackers." Let's just ignore the word
    crackers from now on in this context... it's
    pointless.

    Personally, I prefer the terms "white hats" and
    "black hats." It sounds more cloak & dagger. After
    all, that's what we're arguing about, right? The
    "image" associated with words?

    Yeah I know I can filter him out...

    But why does CmdrTaco keep posting this crap?

    Amazon.com is an online store, out to make money.
    Always has been. They have a slick interface,
    great service, low prices, and great selection.

    They applied these same things to some new
    categories of items. HINT JON: You don't have
    to go to the toys section if you don't want to
    buy toys! I know, it's weird. You can actually
    stay in the books area if you want.

    Personally, I think it's f**king cool to be able
    to order a book, a DVD, a CD, and an electronic
    gadget from one online store -- especially from
    Amazon (for all the benefits listed above). This
    is way beyond KMart or WalMart. Amazon.com is a
    great site and a great store. I wish I had bought
    stock in them when they first came out...

    I bet Jon still thinks R.E.M. is a bunch of
    sell-outs! Grow up...

    I'm not old school, but your definitions make
    much more sense to me than the definitions that
    CmdrTaco and some others throw around. Crackers
    to me always implied people cracking software
    protection as well.

    Plus I'm sick of reading "They used the word
    hacker incorrectly!!" for every single mainstream
    post that is listed on /.

    LET'S MOVE ON. It's pretty clear that hacker is
    now synonymous with someone that *hacks* into a
    computer system, for good or evil. What is the
    point of dividing this up?

    It's like trying to explain to someone that you
    play the cornet, not the trumpet; the
    euphonium, not the baritone; the english horn, not
    the oboe. You drive a jeep, not a truck. You live
    in a condo, not an apartment.

    The important thing is: you KNOW what these people
    are talking about; you know what they mean.

    I'd find it hard to defend christianity like
    this knowing that Jerry Falwell is just as bigoted
    towards gays and non-christians.

    Just because it's a religion makes it off-limits?

    As far as I know, South Park makes fun of
    EVERYTHING, not just religion.

    And to answer why Christianity is the butt of most
    religious jokes on slashdot is quite simple: it's
    the most prominent religion in America.

    1. Their is an agressive attitude towards religion
    on any website that favors scientific-minded,
    rational, people. Slashdot is one of these sites.

    2. You can't slander someone on the web. Libel,
    maybe. Defame, sure. Slander, nope.

    3. Why must I try to understand someone's
    viewpoint when I feel he or she is a blathering
    idiot that doesn't know how to think for him or
    herself? I'm an object-oriented thinker. I've
    already decided that I don't agree with these
    people, and have moved that decision making code
    into an outside library. I just call it whenever
    necessary.

    In other words, I'll stop criticizing religious
    hardliners as soon as Jerry Falwell shuts his big
    fat mouth. (P.S. Jerry: where are those hurricanes
    you promised us in Orlando?)

    4. No, reviews are not generally done by watching
    a movie multiple times. Most critics watch the
    movie once and can tell you all about it... unless
    they are hacks.

    Uh no..... hobbits look nothing like "midgets"
    other than their stature. Go do some searches at
    aint-it-cool-news.com where this is covered in
    great detail.

    The main problem with using midgets is that they
    usually cannot perform the physical stunts and
    movements that normal sized people (and hobbits)
    can. This is one of the main reasons PJ is using
    regular sized people.

    And frankly, there are more normal sized actors
    to choose from. With this technology, you aren't
    limited to finding midget actors that are good;
    you can find the best normal sized actors.

    Go to AICN and read the interviews Harry did with
    PJ -- you should have no worries. He is handling
    this perfectly.

    and that's the bottom line.

    They will make 50-60 million on this IPO,
    regardless of how high it skyrockets, or how low
    it falls on the first day of trading...

    That 50 million will be spent pretty quickly on
    advertisements, distribution channels, engineers,
    etc.

    And just how exactly do you think a public company
    can make a "quick buck"? It's not like Gassee can
    just split up the 50 million with the rest of his
    employees -- a public company is answerable to
    its shareholders.

    In other words, a flawed argument on your part.

    You act as if the information on what hardware
    was supported was kept hidden... they practically
    SCREAMED that Release 4 was for geeks and
    enthusiasts, and was only supported on a limited
    amount of hardware. You could even look up what
    drivers were available from 3rd parties on their
    BeWare site. If your hardware was not supported,
    and you bought it anyway, then that is your
    problem.

    As for their tech support, I have had good results
    from them in general, as I have heard from other
    users as well.

    So I assume you've broken into a BeOS machine
    over a network? How'd you do it? Seems like it'd
    be quite hard and all, considering it ain't
    multi-user nor shipped with a whole ton of
    servers.

    I haven't read one internet stock prospectus
    yet that looks any good -- and they all go through
    the roof. They have to list all the possible RISKS
    in the prospectus, so they usually aren't a very
    glowing report on the company's chances.

    However, I'd never feel more comfortable betting
    my money in Vegas -- the stock market has much
    better odds if you know what you're doing.

    How exactly are you measuring the BeOS userbase?
    I'd rather not rely on the numbers you pull out
    of your ass...

    BeOS is a very young OS. (And don't anyone tell
    me it has been around since 1991, because *IT* hasn't... the company has, not the OS). x86
    is the most popular platform available, and it's
    only been out for x86 for about a year and a half
    now (R3).

    For chrissakes, they haven't even put the OS out
    on store shelves yet! You can't compare it to any
    other OS's in that league yet, like Windows, Linux, Mac, etc. Wait until they get more money
    for distribution, advertisement, and of course,
    engineers!

    You ain't seen nothing yet.

    P.S. I bet you didn't know that a large portion
    of the EBAY stock holders are the loyal customers
    and fans of EBAY. EBAY shot through the roof for
    that very reason. BEOS will do the same. I'm going
    to be putting my money where my mouth is, too.

    Satire is about the oldest form of comedy there

    is something like, "making fun of someone else or

    That's funny, it's daylight and I'm not made of stone. Just because I hold a different viewpoint
    does not make me a troll. Obviously, if you really
    thought I was a troll, why would you be dumb
    enough to respond?

    Is that a new rule you made up? Actually, I was
    talking about the DESKTOP market, period. What the
    hell kind of office do you work in? A programmer's
    office, a network management office, and IT
    office, etc. All those offices I could see Linux
    in. But your everyday, common office is filled
    with people that want a good GUI that is
    consistent (user-friendly) across applications.
    Linux does not fit the bill.

    I don't quite get your analogy, but if I had my

    I think the problem is you're assuming that when
    I criticize Linux I'm also supporting Windows.
    Not true. I hate Microsoft. I would love to see
    BeOS, Linux, Java, etc. get more of the market.

    Nah, the OS just needs to be smart enough to know
    what you're trying to do. As someone mentioned,
    you can hold the mouse over the taskbar icon for
    a program, and it will popup after a second or two. In Win98/2000, you can drag an item over a
    folder in Explorer, and it will expand as needed.

    But drag and drop is just one cool thing about
    GUI's. It's all about being able to have several
    programs visible at once, and allowing cool
    programs to do cool things that are impossible
    in a commandline environment.

    For example, in BeOS 4.5, there is a new program
    called 3dsound which has a really awesome
    interface. You'd have to try it to see what I
    mean. It just "makes sense."

    By all means, the current GUI/mouse paradigm is
    limited and will be phased out in 5 years or less.
    Monitors will be flatscreen technology that can be
    rolled up like a thick poster, and hung anywhere.
    We should be getting into really cool holographic
    technology by then. I'd be surprised if there
    wasn't a really ingenious 3D user interface by
    2005. And voice recognition should be nearly
    flawless by that time. (Michael Abrash, code
    wizard, is working with Microsoft on "natural
    language parsing" -- the reason he left id
    Software... I expect good things to ensue.)

    There's already technology out there that can
    beam the image directly into your eye, without
    a monitor at all, so the image appears to be
    floating out in front of your face.

    Cool.

    Oh lord. My point was that there is a level of
    progression. Punch cards -> Commandline interface -> Mouse-oriented GUI -> ???? (Voice recognition GUI, 2D/3D/holographic?).

    Why does everything have to be an OS contest? I'm
    not making a statement about the operating system,
    I'm making a statement about the interface.

    I don't need to do that in the OS's I use (BeOS
    and Windows). That's because the GUI's are built
    in from the get-go (moreso in BeOS).

    match with OS zealots.
