  1. Quicktime unprotect? on Park Wars Released · · Score: 1

Who knows how to unprotect "protected" quicktime movies? Someone must have done this by now, but I can't find anything on google or the USENET.

I would normally agree with you. I regularly convert "cool" quicktime vids to mpeg for linux, but almost every quicktime vid I've downloaded over the past year has some sort of protection enabled. If you try to load the video into a conversion program, such as Premiere, it gives you the same kind of message you get if you try to load an encrypted DVD file (file doesn't exist). BTW, I use TMPG for Windows (since it is free) and it works great. Anybody out there know how to disable quicktime protection? And while I'm on it, I know this feature has been present for some time, but did apple make a 64x64 button or something in the latest quicktime authoring software?!? That's the only way I can explain everybody using it all of a sudden.

I'll have to agree with you that Basilisk II is currently the best mac emu out there, but... you have to admit, when Fusion first came out, it was "the cat's meow". When I first got it, I dusted off my old 68040 mac, pulled out the SCSI drive(which had System 7.5), plugged it into my PC, and fired up Fusion with no problems. It ran all my apps (Office, older quicktime, and some games like Aperion) no problem. I haven't tried it with System 8, but I have heard that people have had problems. I'm quite happy with Basilisk II now. I will definitely give Fusion another shot if they make good on their PPC version, which is promised by then end of the year. Regards, -ab

Holy moly!! Apple is about to release version 10 of their OS. Does this mean we're 3 versions behind?!? Hmm... Caldera has something called "Preview 2.4", with the 2.4 Kernel, while Mandrake has "Mandrake 7.2" with the 2.2 kernel. Duh! *You*, yes, *You* can release your own distribution of Linux tomorrow, and call it "Maroon Hat Linux 8.0", then you'll have everyone playing "catch up". ;-) I don't mean to insult anyone, including the author of this comment, but newspapers glean info from this page, and this is the kind of goofy comment that gets them to print things like "Next Version of Linux to be released soon." And leaves people who work for distributions scratching their heads!

Read that press release really carefully, you know, like a M$ Drone would, and then ask yourself this question: "Is it possible that M$ is porting their apps to all the "closed" (drone-safe) unix Operating Systems, and not to the various open flavors of Linux?" Remember, they did port IE to HP/UX, and there's no chance in hell of running that port on a Linux box. Remember, this is M$, yer gonna get a binary, that's it, no recompiling, no fixing some stupid mistake that got by M$ QA, just a binary. Like many of the posters today, I too would like to have IE5 and Office on my Red Hat Workstation, but I think we're getting are hopes up too high once again. And this is coming from an old Amiga hack! :-)

I'm sure only a tiny bit of Red Hat's profit comes from the sale of the OS, so even if your logic is true, so what? -ab

What's the surest way to make everyone on the planet disappointed with your news/product/whatever? Announce it 3 years in advance, but don't supply *any* information beyond that. People automatically expect the best case scenario. With all the rumor that surrounds 3 years of "this webpage is not here", I remember actually almost believing I would be running my new Amiga on some futuristic triangle-shaped chip that was going to run any OS at speeds that would crush Intel and Motorola. What a glorious day it would be when this new chip came out, and whoa! glory, upon glory, when they hired Linus I was sure this was just going to be the most amazing thing since sliced bread. Well, zap us back to the present... Transmeta has released their product and all the whitepapers for us to peruse, and what have we got? We've got a chip that might just get a little more time out of these barbaric batteries were using in our laptops. Oh boy. Pinch me, I must be dreaming. But wait, there's more: Code morphing! This info was actually leaked a few months before the chip's release, and what did people do? They assumed the best. They assumed you'd be running PowerPC, x86, and Alpha apps at full speed on this "super-chip". What actually exists today? A slow, low power chip that will supposedly run linux. Linus did demo Quake 3 running under Linux at their product announcement shindig, but that's the only time I've ever heard Linux associated with this chip. Well, to wrap up, if you're working on the "next big thing" try to keep it to yourselves instead of letting the world assume you really are going to come out with "the next big thing". For an example of this, Check out http://www.amiga.com. I'm not too excited about what they're doing, but they have pledged not to announce *anything* or promise any "groundbreaking technology" until release date. This is a great policy, IMO.

  16. Differences between Dr. Tom and Sharky Extreme on Overclocking The AMD Duron · · Score: 3

First off... This thread is supposed to be about Dr. Tom's and Sharky Extreme's articles, not about the overclocking debate. If you do it, great! If you don't, *who cares*! I've been running OC since I bumped my 486 DX2-66 up to 80Mhz, and have _never_ blown up a chip. Nowadays, with temp monitors, and screeching alarms, you'd have to be a complete moron to blow up your chip!! Ok, enough of that. Did anyone else notice how the two articles seemed to have completely different takes? Dr. Tom seems to consider this chip the new holy grail of price/performance, and Sharky seems to compare it more to the 66Mhz bus celerons. Also, did you notice how Dr. Tom had all chips running at 950Mhz with no problems, and Sharky couldn't get past 770? I wonder what the deal was there? Maybe sharky did not want to bump up the voltage. Hopefully, we'll get a Duron to test at Redhat, but until then, I'm crossing my fingers that Dr. Tom is correct (as he almost always is!). .95Ghz for $112! Awesome!

I agree with that last post about "look and feel" of the host OS. It's funny that you picked on Quicktime, as I dislike it also. Usually, the first thing I do when I get a cool quicktime movie is to convert it to an mpeg, so I can enjoy it on a better player. My original beef with NS6 was it's ugliness, but also with it's size. It's still almost as bloated as IE5. I have, though, found the solution for those strapped for size and speed: Opera! If you haven't used it in awhile, check it out. It's still in the "rather stinky" stage on Linux, but the Win32 version is really starting to kick ass. (and it's only 2MB!)
