Serious question: so if I'm suddenly without any contact with humans and don't take that too well, is it a sign of addiction or legitimate unmet needs? Unlike cigarettes and other drugs, the Internet allows contact with other people and culture that might not be possible otherwise. The difference between the Internet and face-to-face contact is that the former can and often does get suddenly cut off, while the latter is much more reliable, so you rarely experience what the absence is like.
Like one of the other posters, I think the only addiction is that of seeing unwanted behavior in others as a sign of disease.
Related to the whole HP thing but not this article is that I've just realized that this whole "pretexting" thing wasn't a form of sending false text messages to phones, but a euphemism for "lying". Just thought others might not have caught on immediately either. I guess I wasn't thinking "low enough" to catch on more quickly.
That's obviously a fake transcript. Where are the anonymous user IDs? If it was like this, I'd have believed you:
1226277: (excited) Hey boss, you know that Weird Al video we're gonna promo? It's been leaked all over the net. There's a lot of buzz! I think it's gonna be a big hit.
633122: (annoyed) You mean hackers stole one of our products?
Is this just them taking an opportunity to voice their opinions in a way that will give them a wider audience, given that version 3 is an impossible option due to the simple technical reason of being unable to contact every contributor (even dead ones) for permission? (I haven't RTFA of course)
Yes, paying developers to implement features allows said developers to spend more time on coding than on some alternate means of acquiring money in order to pay for food and shelter.
"Look's like you're trying to backup a CD. Would you like to settle now using one-click payment, or would you like me to contact the RIAA and your lawyer?"
What about the realiability of this? I'm assuming the respective formats already are pushing things, leaving little room for decreased reflectivity. Reminds me of the problems older CD-ROM drives had years ago when CD-Rs were a fairly new thing, as CD-Rs don't reflect as much light as normal CD-ROMs do. I could accept having reduced reliability on recordable media, but now they want to use such schemes on pre-pressed media? I wonder if recordable HD-DVDs will be more reliable in the future than this hybrid junk.
It's a counterfeit only if the sellers were claiming it was an authorized copy ("the real thing"). I think most buyers would know that a $2 DVD is not such a thing.
And when I go "I told you so" they go "yeah, but its a name brand and it costs more. It SHOULD work better."
It does work better for the movie companies who want to limit what you can do with your player. This is a case where you rather not a well-made implementation of something that restricts you.
I think I failed on the delivery. It sounds like I'm referring to the lower quality of lossy-compressed music, rather than the fact that CDs are also in fact digital music. I guess they aren't DIGITAL!!! as in the latest best thing, the same way you can buy digital headphones that have all analog components and accept an analog signal. Er yeah, rant over.
The design flaw is apparently in allowing lusers to run as admin and then complain that they were given admin access. Solution: don't give your main user account admin access.
There are studies that eldery people who play things like crossword puzzles on a regular basis are generally more alert and have a better mental capacity than others their age who don't engage in such behaviors.
So you're saying that those old people who aren't "mentally fit" enough to do things like crossword puzzles... don't do things like crossword puzzles?

"Addiction" is the modern version of "possession [by the devil]".
Potentially, it could pack the punch of a rocket in a box the size of a suitcase.
That seals it. The terrerists could use this, so we must ban all further research!
5% shrinkage a year? It's a good thing they're having to replace them, otherwise they'd be tiny little things after just a few years!

Just one question: does this mean I could finally get a full 56K modem connection to my ISP, using this setup?

Yeah, but then the first one is the last one..err the last one is the first one. Argh... yes, you're right!

The aerial view will ensure that they don't put up anything that looks bad from our flying cars. Oh, wait...

I predict that they will eventually go the way of the FPU.
You mean back into the main CPU core where they (GPUs) came from in the first place?
A 0.02% change? Wow, 1 in 5000 Mac OS X users have defected. The sky is falling, quick, hide!

I know someone I won't be playing Monopoly with.

No problem, I'll just wait for a CD-R+RFID-R writer. Sure, the discs will cost $8 a piece at first, but the price will go down eventually.

Why would anyone want the cold, lifeless sound of digital music when they can have the warm, refreshing sound of a compact disc?
I take it you've seen a preview of the upcoming remakes of the original Star Trek?

Sorry, this is Slashdot. What is this concept of "date" you refer to?
