That blog posting reads like PR. It's so clearly not objective. The biggest reason I switched to Google's DNS is that it doesn't do any damn redirection. I hate that OpenDNS search page that comes up. I don't see any way to configure OpenDNS without having to sign up or something annoying. Google's doesn't require any signup; just 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and go.

No, but it does show that singling one out as the only one is not justified, and it highlights the erroneous approach of focusing only on new things, all the while ignoring things that have been around all along, like your ISP being able to datamine everything you do.

  19. Re:Another things to consider on Lifecycle Energy Costs of LED, CFL Bulbs Calculated · · Score: 1

Another things to consider is heat output. More or less, any energy that isn't becoming light is becoming heat. Now in some areas of the world, that matters little to none.

It's still a waste if you have a heat pump, which has a coefficient of performance (COP) greater than 1.0. A resistive heater is 1.0.

However in hot climates, it does. An incandescent produces more heat which gets dumped in to the air in your house. You then have to run your AC more often. So you end up paying double for the power, in terms of using it and then eliminating the excess.

An air conditioner also has a COP greater than 1.0, so you don't pay double for the excess energy the incandescent uses.

So, if you need heating and don't have a heat pump, you might as well use incandescents in the winter. If you do have a heat pump, or it's summer, use CFLs.

Regardless if global warming is a problem, we should ALL strive to lessen our effect on the environment. Restricting emissions that may not heat up the planet, BUT have noticeable problems on health of humans and wildlife.

Everything we do has an effect on the environment. Lessening things that have an effect that's detrimental to us is good, but there are different approaches we can take, each with different tradeoffs. We must know what things are most harmful. We must also trade off who gets the benefits. And finally, we aren't going to devote 100% of our resources to reducing effects, so there's another tradeoff we must make. If we're rational, we'll not let politics color our scientific investigation into the facts of the environment and effects on it, and we'll acknowledge the inherent tradeoffs when we're deciding how much to devote to environmental issues.
