  1. Re:Tires? - Moderate to non-factual? on Spirit Rover is One Year Old · · Score: 5, Informative

This post should be moderated non-factual.

The solar panels are not "degrading" as much as their ability to collect solar energy is being limited by dust covering them and the winter season. Now that Martian winter is over for both Rovers, they are going to see increased power. Interestingly, and noted elsewhere, Opportunity is seeing up to "landing day" power levels, due perhaps to some Martian dust devils "cleaning" the panels.

JPL instituted energy conservation measures - no instruments were permanently "shut down" - all of the instruments on both MERs are functioning. Opportunity is put into a "Deep Sleep" which does temporarily shut off all instrumentation, but they are brought back online. This was done not for the winterization of the rovers, but in answer to a problem Opportunity had with one of it's heaters for an instrument.

The confusion in this post with Voyager/Pioneer has already been noted.

JPL guys were (and are) doing miracles to keep the craft functional.

JPL is not performing a great deal of real-time operational control over the Voyager craft. They are more monitoring what is left of the various experiments and power levels.

The miracle was performed back in the 70s when these craft were built - they certainly engineered them damn tough! Say what you will about how we've lost 2 shuttles, but NASA has shown some huge successes in our robotic craft: Voyager, Pioneer, NEAR, Deep Space 1 and MERs.

There's not a lot of questions that someone could ask that a stroll through your blog archives wouldn't answer. You're a family man, you've gone through some really harsh, but introspective good times and you've created a career where you get to be creative, filling your geek quota and doing what you started out doing - entertaining.

There are probably just as many people in acting, as well as in any job, that struggle with identity, like you did. They struggle with expectations, they struggle with defining who they are or struggle with exceeding/overcoming definitions that have been put on them. You've answered this in several ways in your book, but if you could summarize - just what the hell did you learn - and if you could be a mentor like Stewart/Frakes were to you - what would you share/teach the budding actors/actresses/geeks/geekettes?

What do you want your legacy to be? And how will you share it?

That's one of the things that has been seducing me towards Slackware - the concept of cleaning up my installation and having something clean and simple - rather than a bunch of binaries that 'I might need'.

Besides - if I need something that bad, make; make install works perfectly.

I seriously have to question any religion that advocates or has advocated the elimination of another religion or belief (Crusades, current Moral Minority are good examples).

I seriously have to question the concept that a signle thing 'died' for us so that we 'believe' this person died for us. The focus should not be on that - it should be on that we believe in doing good and not adding to entropy.

I seriously have questions about a single religion when you have 5 dominant religions in the world, each suited for their civilation and ecology/economy of origin, and they all purport to be the One True Way, all you have to do is believe!

I seriously have questions about a religion which is more set up for the benefit of a governance than for a belief in a higher purpose and being.

Maybe the real gift would be inner peace, inner enlightment and inner acceptance that all have a different Path.

The problem with trying to backtrack is that this distributed DOS sounds like it could be set up as a message based system with no ACKs required. Just a message to 'wake up', 'heres your targets - go get 'em'.

Althought... an article on ZDNet mentions that there's a series of of agents and connects - one of them being a secured connection to download the targets. I suppose they could do this using broadcast, but it would be hard to set up. They could also, I suppose, mask the control machine from the master hosts by making the control send in a non-connection environment with a spoofed IP. That would at least shield the final link.

Bottom line is - if this is a sophisticated attack, I think going backwards on the chain has already been taken care of. We should check, but it's probably not going to get us any closer.

Just as a side note, it looks like HNN, l0pth and other black/grey hat sites are bogged down... media attention or a bit of the DOS on them as well. Has anyone seen if antionline is still accessible? *G*
