there was no direct causation mentioned specifically in the article, but if you apply Occam's razor to the problem the simplest and most likely solution seems: no one had heard from him (probably even about him) and had no way of knowing who he was with or where. Given that specific information it's easy to make the treats or promises to obtain his release.
And yeah, I know what they say about assumptions but there is such a thing as a safe one.
1. Money cannot buy happiness, it can buy security.
The key word there is 'can'. Money buys you options. Enough money and you can make good or bad decisions with it towards the goal you have. (And 'security' is an excellent one, IMHO) Not enough money and too often you're looking at choice between bad and worse.
Oh waaah. I guarantee they don't hate their lives as I much as hate them whining about them.
At least they have $250k(minus taxes, sure but still more than most) to choose to spend! And expenses like mortgages and tuition are actually investments that will more likely than not come out way ahead in time. Look I'm sorry your townhouse is taking a bite out of your salary but it's also paying for retirement perhaps. No such luck for those with an equivalent bite of their income going to rent, credit debt or any number of traps the poor can't help falling into. A large salary buys a lot of choices, so don't expect sympathy from me when you whine about the ones you made.
And if the rich hate the system that much, who is in a better position to change it than them?
I agree 100% that a person's private behavior should not reflect on the aspects of their professional / public life if it isn't directly relevant. However, that is not the way it works in practice and until that changes one needs to address what 'is', not what 'should be'. Being the 'public spokesman' of an organization especially blurs the lines between between private and public actions. And the amount of comments on all of these stories show there is a public interest, legitimate or not.
It could be a good opportunity for wikiLeaks to show they are truly committed to posting all information in the public interest by posting the police reports and other documents relating to the case. Redact the potential victims names, etc, and put up something that may be damaging to yourself would really show commitment to the ideals you've espoused, IMHO.
...is waiting for all the online videos of next-door neighbors sunbathing topless, looking up all like "WTF!?" and running inside. And then the inevitable litigation for the encore.
IIRC, the Beastie Boys had their fans shoot video for a live DVD as well. But they didn't give it away. Thumbs up for Radiohead! They're not really my style but they seem to have more integrity than most bands out there and I got to respect the hell out of that.
I don't know how many military people would be offended or not by this. Why not let them decide for themselves by buying the game, or not, or complaining to the store if they find it's mere presence too much? If it offends, it won't be in the store on base very long, and if it doesn't - let them choose to buy it!
So how can you say Moses invented the 'single god'? Why are the major mono-theistic religions referred to as 'Abrahamic' religions? And what defined the Jews in Egypt if not this belief, taken from Abraham?
I have a suspicion you haven't actually read The Baroque Cycle. To me it seemed all about the idea that only rational thinking and actual science (not 'alchemy') can move civilization forward. It painted a picture of the 17th/18th century as an interesting place, but not a pleasant one. Especially if you have bladder stones. *shudder*
And what's with the 'we'? Are techies now some sort of homogeneous hive mind that are all interested or not in the exact same thing?
from TFA:
Moderate drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day,
But you are correct in that way too many involved with the recovery movement seems to act like 3 drinks is 'heavy' if not 'problem' drinking.
For me it is not. YMMV.
This is exactly the type of thing that makes me want a workable micropayments scheme. I'd dig having the full version in either electronic or dead tree form, sure, but I can't justify the cost. I could easily see myself paying US$0.25 or something to look up words as needed, though.

Seems like a fairly logical outcome to recording death / near death experiences.
we're waiting on the Rule 34 action with these things!

They had that band that was pretty big. Bigger than Jesus, someone said..

nobody even cared
