Agreed.
I haven't bothered logging in with my account for a good 7 or 8 years. But I dragged it out to stand with you in solidarity. (In the meantime, I have continued to visit the site to read the comments, and still comment myself, but anonymously, as I never felt that anything I had to say was important enough to attach my name to. However this is.)
Please don't kill the community, Slashdot.
Not always. I thuink it may depend on the bank. I know this because I got stung. My card was used illegitimately to purchase about $500 more than I had in my account (perhaps because I had been using it for online purchases; I don't know where they got the number). Result? My balance went about negative $500. I tried to call the bank and sort it out, when I found out (about a month later), but they had already closed my account due to this, and wouldn't reverse everything. So I had no more account and my credit rating took a big hit.
Unfortunately, I didn't have much recourse due to the fact that I am in Canada, and my account is (er, was) with Bank of America (making it easier to do US transactions). The laws are horrendous for dealing with trans-border finances like that, and it was easier (and probably cheaper) to just swallow the loss and kill my BA account. Now I just have my Canadian VISA account for doing anything online, which I have learned has much better protection.

Exactly. You can't. Napster at best is dubious. I've always steered clear of it myself, and don't really blame Metallica for going after it.
What REALLY pisses me off is them going after MP3.com. MP3.com was most definitely a legitimate venue for small, independant artists. And Metallica trying to shut them down -- now that, I will never forgive.

> Do they expect current blood tests to check for previously unknown pathogens as well? Perhaps they expect their car radio presets to adjust themselves when a new station carrying a format they would like starts broadcasting.
The sad thing is, I know a number of people who would read something like that and go, "now there's an idea! I wonder why thay can't do that?"...

And are you maybe now realizing that it's probably not different -- the person who posted the source code probably did exactly the same thing and had the tag stripped out of his post as well?

I would (and do). But given the fact that around 50% (number made up off the top of my head based on general observation) drive automatics, I think the answer to your question is pretty obvious...

For the record, I did check the FAQ, under the section on the +1 bonus. And I happened to notice the following statements:
"But it also bears more responsibility. A Score:2 comment will be seen by more people."
"just because you think it deserves that bonus point doesn't mean that other people will."
"a good poster will need to learn when he ought to use his bonus point. Certainly not every time."
"a 'Me Too!' comment certainly isn't worthy of that extra bonus."
"its also designed to make sure that they have the right to choose when to shout, and the community can tell them to shut up when they're just blowing hot air"
Sorry, but that seems pretty conclusive to me. I also have a +1 bonus available to me. However, you won't catch me using it here. In fact, you'll almost never catch me using it anywhere. I've had it for several months now, at least. And in all the hundreds of posts I've made since then, I haven't used it once. I'd much rather save it for what it is intended for -- raising my voice when there's something that I really want heard. When something comes up that's important to me; that I can contribute to the discussion on, then I will use it to get my voice heard, since it will be worth it.
It's certainly your prerogative and your right to use it whenever you wish, but I strongly urge you to show restraint in when you use it. The idea is that people who use it when it's not warranted will get their posts moderated down, and so lose Karma. Unfortunately, that isn't happening, mainly because there is just so much crap out there that moderators spend time moderating that crap down, and don't have any points left for stuff like this. But please don't use that as an opening to abuse the system, as small an abuse as it may be.
(BTW: not the same person that posted earlier -- just responding to your comments.)

So good, I almost (almost!) caught myself nodding my head in agreement every now and then.
And even when I decided that most of it was bunk, my first instinct was to think the poster was more ignorant than anything else. I was about to send off a huge response explaining to you exactly where you were wrong. hehe It took me quite a while to realize it was a troll.
Very, very, very well done, sir! Definitely one for the hall of fame.
-- It's a fine line between trolling and karma-whoring... and I think I just crossed it. - Sean
My point was that the reason the gov't was disturbing the signal was for "security" reasons -- they didn't want the ability to pinpoint locations that accurately to be in the hands of ordinary citizens. However, that ability is now available (or will be in the very near future) with other satellite services (of which Terraserver was one -- possibly poor -- example). It just struck me that the march of technology allowing this sort of service to be available to just about anyone was rendering the sort of government intrusion this demonstrates to be more and more obsolete.
If that makes any sense.
-- It's a fine line between trolling and karma-whoring... and I think I just crossed it. - Sean
It would seem to me that they had to do something like this pretty soon. What with all the TerraServer's and the like popping up, there wouldn't have been much point to it. It's one thing if there's no other way of getting such good/accurate information, but now there are other ways. And more and more seem to be showing up every day. So any "national security" concerns (or whatever) are by now pretty much bunk.
-- It's a fine line between trolling and karma-whoring... and I think I just crossed it. - Sean
Oh, for sure. I'm not debating that... there are a lot of good points in there that I believe in. I think you misconstrued my entire post as meaning something more than it does -- it was really just an off-the-cuff reply to the following statements, in particular:
The pressure from management to meet some imaginary 'deadline' (often invented after two many beers during an 'important meeting') means software goes out barely tested if at all. In 10 years as a programmer I've never seen a program get more than an hours testing before it got sent out.
-- It's a fine line between trolling and karma-whoring... and I think I just crossed it. - Sean
The project I'm currently working on, and which is almost at completion (a commercial project). has just gone through 4 weeks of having the absolute s**t pounded out of it (ie: testing).
And it's not that big a program.
What that says about anything, I dunno. But it is a counter-example, anyway.
-- It's a fine line between trolling and karma-whoring... and I think I just crossed it. - Sean
Whoa! That's amazing -- I code in an almost identical fashion. I'd never realized it before. I've been asked "how" I code in the past, and never really been able to come up with a satisfactory answer. But you hit the nail right on the head -- that's exactly the way I code.
It's kind of interesting, too, that I also come from an English (ie: human language) writing background.
