Glad you caught the bastiche though.

  2. what about us musicians? on Why iPod Can't Save Apple · · Score: 1, Interesting

Mac is still very popular, and very much used in audio and video. I'm a new comer into the audio engineering world and I've never not used a mac outside of my own studio. Windows just isn't stable enough for me to deal with it. Can you imagine recording a 24 track pro tools session and all of a sudden the machine stops responding?

No thank you, I don't want my client, who could have tracked three songs in a day, eating up that many channels realize "hey, I just wasted a ton of money on studio time, and now we're going to have to do it again?"

Thanks, but no thanks. I'll take a more stable mac, with better software and support, than that any day.

Call me crazy, but it's just how I am.

  3. My social skills on Building Social Skills in Gifted Youths? · · Score: 1

Growing up I was always in the "smart" classes. I really didn't trust anybody due to the mocking nature many of my "peers" did to me based on going to the gifted school every Friday.

It only became worse when I left elementary school and entered middle and high school. The other factor for me was that I was dirt poor.

I had very few friends, and they are what I consider true friends. No matter what, they will stick by my side. These are the guys and girls that don't care about apperances.

Now I'm an IT professional, in school for audio engineering. Trying to make my life happier doing something that I really enjoy. I've had some road blocks fitting in with my peers, but it has gotten much better since those early days growing up.

I really attribute me getting to know people better and opening myself up to partying. If it weren't for electronic music in dirty ass ware houses in the early 90s I probably would still be a social invert. If it weren't for trying certain chemicals I wouldn't have the guts to talk to girls I liked.

I've never made any changes about my outward apperance. I really don't think how you dress, comb your hair or tattoo/pierce into your body. Everybody is different and people will like you, or hate you, depending on your choices.

Is really caring what people think about how you comb your hair really all that important? Hell I haven't brushed or combed my hair in three years almost. Granted I have dread locks now, but that's not the point. Even before I decided to dread my hair I just let the pillow do my hair styling for me.

If you carry yourself well then you won't have many problems. Learning to do that can be difficult and everybody is different in that aspect. For me it took raves, it took illegal parties and drugs. I wouldn't change how I got here for anything in the world.

  4. Security risks on IM Usage & Awareness Services · · Score: 1

Well, as a contractor with the government our department has made all instant messaging "illegal" for the portion of the network I control. Gradually all other networks will be decomissioned and all users will be here. It is a pain in the ass blocking AIM, YAIM and all that.

The PIX just isn't built for stuff like this. Have to route the login servers to localhost, and there seems to be new ones every day.

Lucky for me they'll be getting some silly product or another (websense, or web something or another from netiq) to help combat this.

Their reasoning? People could start talking about something they're not allowed to and it going to a third party server. Just can't allow that.

Yes, my users are pissed off. But what can one do when enforcing policy?

  6. I say no all the time. on Learning to Say No in the Workplace? · · Score: 1

I contract with the government. It's me and one other guy handling all the network support, he does the switches and routers, I do the server maintence and network security.

We get a ton of requests that are outside of the scope of what we're supposed to handle. Technically we're level three and level four support when it comes to any issues, regardless of network or VoIP.

Many of the things we say no to are against department policy, so those are the easiest. There's no way I'm going to violate our security plan just to make the life of one customer happier. I'd lose my job, and I'd rather my direct government supervisors be happy that I didn't violate that than have a customer be happy that something was easier.

I get requests all the time to unblock instant messaging, but that's not going to happen. Our switches already know to bit bucket all authentication servers for icq, aim, yahoo and msn. That's by far my favourite thing to say no to presently. Just waiting for them to start complaining about the lack of yahoo! mail. *g*

Unfortunately as code red has shown us lately security is a major player that people tend not to add into their budget or network configuration.

If operating systems came default everything turned off upon install we wouldn't have issues of this magnitude. Or perhaps if patches were properly applied in a timely manner.

I believe that the general public should be known of the security hole, in detail. Your network administrator/security group should be on the ball and fixing it when it's made public. If not you'll never know when a daemon, program etc needs to be patched or upgraded.
