Thank you. April Fools Day would be much more enjoyable without the blowhards wining about how they don't find it amusing. We don't care about what you find, or don't find funny. Please go to your room for the rest of the day so the rest of us can enjoy it in peace.
This reminds me of one of David Weber's book where the moon is really a giant spaceship with a thin layer of rock over the top to camouflage it. As I recall the original moon was dropped into the sun. Nobody noticed the switch since this happened long before humans were around.
I so frequently see people who remind me of someone else. Similar facial features/hair/skin coloring/etc. It would be interesting to have it run thru millions of faces and group them by similarity to see if there is a sort of finite number of different face "types". Also, it would be fun to give it a photo of my face and find my doppelgangers.
What does it matter? They had watches 100 years ago. Have you ever seen anyone using one? No? Me either. I seriously doubt a Rolex bought today would be used by anyone in 100 years.
How old are you? If you seriously think that the state of the USA now and the state of the USSR then are in any way analogous makes me think you can't be very old. And, the fact that you called it Russia and not the USSR makes me doubly think you are a young one. Were you even born when the Berlin Wall came down?
I'm trying to figure out what part you are surprised at. That the mormons are interested in genealogy? No surprise there. That DNA is being used for genealogy purposes? No surprise there. That Ancestry.com, a genealogy company that has a history of buying up other genealogy companies, would want to get into the genealogy DNA business thru an acquisition? No surprise there. The only thing I can think of that would surprise you is that people were willing to pay somewhere around $100 to a non-profit to have their DNA sequenced to learn more about their probable ancestry. I don't need to pay anyone $100 for that. I can just look at my skin color and get a pretty good idea of what part of the world my ancestors came from.
Before Obama I thought anyone who didn't have the name of Bush or Clinton would be a good choice (dynasty issues). Apparently it is not enough to elect someone with a different last name than Bush or Clinton. The only sensible choice is to elect someone without a last name. Which one of these would you vote for? President Gaga. President Madonna. President the Artist formerly known as Prince. President Xzibit. President [Your Choice].
This. This is the main reason I don't use any sort of social media. The secondary reason is it just seems like such a waste of time. I hardly have time to do everything I need to do in my own life, how could I possibly find time to read about what others are doing in their lives?
Yes, the only one in my neighborhood who has installed solar panels is also the poorest family in the neighborhood. The main reason they did it is because they didn't have to pay anything, and they are hoping that it will help lower their electricity bill.
Other than advice, why don't you tell her about yourself? What are your memories growing up? How did you and your wife meet (you wife can tell her, but you will have a different side of the story)? What do you remember about the day she was born? What memories stand out from when she was growing up? What are your happiest memories? What are things you are glad you did? Etc. Even if she doesn't appreciate them, your potential future grand-children might.
Your argument is the same as. "My uncle never smoked a day in his life and died of lung cancer. Smoking does not cause lung cancer".
I know smokers who really do believe that.
I know of a family who has a child that is allergic to all nut, milk, wheat, dairy, eggs, some fruits, and probably a few more I can't remember. And these are deadly allergies, not just break out in a rash allergies. I have no idea what he eats, but I feel so sorry for him (and his family who has had to make sure none of those products, or products that might contain traces of those products, ever enter the home).
Do you not have children? It has been the established recommendation in every book I've ever read, from every pediatrician I've ever talked to, etc. not to give children peanuts/peanut butter before 36 months. I just did a google search out of curiosity and apparently there were a number of large scale studies that led to this recommendation.
Yes, but I have kids and we've always been told not to feed them peanuts till they are a certain age. Now it looks like that was bad advice.

But, how do I know that a new study won't come out next year that will say "Hold everything! Giving babies peanuts is actually a deadly thing to do!" It's just so frustrating that it causes paralysis to set in since I don't know when to trust the science and when not to trust the science. In this case, the science is saying to give kids peanuts, but I think I'll stick with the old recommendations for my kids.
The question is, when do you know the science is "finished"? I swear every year there is a new study saying something is good for you, followed by more studies saying it's bad for you, then more saying it's good for you. Sometimes it seems like science flip-flops worse than a politician. I'm not saying that science or the scientific method isn't great, it's just hard to know when to know the final word is in to know whether it is beneficial to ingest some substance to improve my health.
Alcohol - http://health.howstuffworks.co...
Marijuana - I'm pretty sure the police officer who talked to us in 3rd grade said that we would die if we smoked marijuana. I consider death to be bad for my health;-)
Alcohol is good for your health! Alcohol is bad for your health! Smoking is good for your health (says the 1940s doctor)! Smoking is bad for your health! Marijuana is bad for your health! Marijuana is good for your health!
The only guarantee is that next year what is good will be bad and what is bad will be good.

The worst thing about April Fools Day is people complaining about it being April Fools Day and the gags not being funny.

That's not true. At least in terms of the RAM. I've upgraded the RAM on my MBP.
What? My main laptop dates from 2008 and is still going strong (though it is a mac book pro, so maybe that has something to do with it).
I have to assume that yesterday's XKCD was aimed squarely at the iWatch.

Um, no neither. But I have dealt with 4 year olds who haven't yet mastered English grammar.
"me want" > "I want" or "This is what I want"
"please to explain?" > "please explain"

Or Apple is not overpriced & you are stupid. I lean more toward the former, but I wouldn't put money down on it not being the latter.

Heh, I just saw a link to this article on USA Today ;-) http://www.usatoday.com/story/...
