  1. Re:HDTV comming of age on Creating 3D Computer Graphics From 2D HDTV Camera · · Score: 1

erm, you do understand that hdtv has existed in japan (and maybe other asian countries?) for several years now.. even back to or before 1995.
The major difference being that they use an analog system and our system (american, titled DTV) uses a proprietary digital system that is completely different from any standard in ANY other country.

[sarcasm] Of course, since hollywood is so smart, our system will have intimate piracy protection systems built in so that those nasty pirates that steal movies off of the air (and thus degrade our capital and king, hollywood). Which incidentally will produce movies and shows that can only be seen on compatible sets, forcing all other countries to fall into stride. After all, they need our protection from those nasty pirates.. Even the casual pirates that want to watch a show more than their alloted one time. [/sarcasm]

This is flamebait if I ever saw one..
You will never have a console game that looks better than a computer counterpart.. consoles just can't keep up with the dev cycle of computers.
Sure, they might look good for 4-6 months, maybe a year after release.. but computers will always surpass them (and consoles are usually around for 4+ years..)

In fact, when quake2 was being ported over to the psx and n64, they had to /decrease/ the levels' size and use smaller textures. (Especially the n64 because of the small video ram in it)

Plus there's the addons that you can't use on a console version of a comp game.. no hope of adding user made maps, mods, player models, etc.
And on top of that, you can't play the same game on the latest console.. they're all incompatible (The same way comps were back in the early 80's)..
If I wanna play quake1, 2 and 3.. then I need quake 1 and 2 for psx or n64 and then 3 for my dc.. If I was doing the same thing with my comp then I'd just need to install them and start playing.

hrm.. this is too offtopic as it is..

Pentiums were certainly not out in 1992.. If they existed, it was nowhere near the consumer market.

    I had a 486sx20 4mb ram, 170mb hdd, 2400baud modem with a 14" monitor and a 24pin dot matrix printer.. and that cost $2400 in LATE 1992
This is not only the slowest 486 that money could buy.. but at that time it was one of the few 486's that money could buy.

Pentiums came out more like 1994 or 1995.

Heh, I remember reading reviews of 386dx40mhz laptops in magazines of that time.. If you had an extra thousand dollars or so to spend on it then you could get a color screen with that!
May seem hard to believe in this time.. with no computers selling below 200mhz (well, new comps anyways) and with the last of the brand new monochrome screened laptops selling out back in, what?, 1994, 1995?

heh, in fact, I remember reading plenty of reviews of pentium 75 laptops in mags from 1995.. along side the 'bug' reports from the famous floating point and f0 0f bugs :P

Actually, I think such a transformer arrangement was trackable for at least one of a few reasons:

    1) The current that the coil draws creates a stronger than normal magnetic field.

(This all works basically b/c of magnetism)
    2) The coil draws current from the ether, and to keep the status quo the power lines have to lose more current to the ether. (Kinda like a little hole in the bottom of a milk jug, or a upside down cup full of water.. in water (pull it up out of the water.. water will stay in it.. etc))

Of course.. any coil arrangement like that is going to be *highly* lossy, and ineffecient.. normal transformers try to get the transmission coils as close as possible.

And also, If you do try this.. ya gotta be foolhardy to try it.. but a nice ferrious metal rod inside the coils will draw much more current than one with an air coil :P

And also make you more noticable in the case of #1 :P

  12. Re:Agree - Re:It's not wrong to figure it out... on DirecTV's Secret War On Hackers · · Score: 1

    I agree with ethereal..

    It's like this..
whether I'm listening to the radio on my way to work or not.. they are still broadcasting it to everyone within range of their tower. I have no impact on the radio station whatsoever if I decide never to listen to them again.

If I watch TV or listen to the radio and make a point of not buying anything that is advertised.. Am I stealing from the TV station or the radio station? After all, avertising is what pay's their bills. If I don't buy anything advertised, then there's no point in advertising it, and they won't.

The *only* reason why tv or radio stations aren't in a world of hurt right now is because there is always someone who will buy something that is advertised.

Now, because I don't buy stuff that I see ads for.. then I'm not providing my part in the revenue (akin to the subscription costs for directv).. and if I'm not paying for this service.. just what *AM* I doing?

Having satellite signals broadcasted to your property is unavoidable. Why should someone worry about being able to receive them? Heh, If I take the raw data stream and feed it to a synth and make a killing by selling the music I produce that way.. Is my neighbor negatively impacted? Is the signal altered for other ppl? Am I hurting the 'content provider'? (I doubt anything good would come out of a synth in that arrangement :P)

Personally, I don't want anything to do with one of those Little Silly Dish's.. I'd rather have a Big Ugly Dish with analog C-band, Ku-band, and digital mpg2 sats with signals in the clear (like network feeds for pop shows)

(sorry for the long rant :P)

  23. Doomed to fail on "D-VHS": Will it replace DVD? · · Score: 1

For a variety of reasons (most of which, I assume, have already been pointed out by the more intellegent slashposters...).
    1) Cost.
Come on, I have to buy a $10k tv, $2k dvhs vcr and $10-15 per media, just to use this?
    2) Piracy??
    argh, ok
    a) a special connector that will only work on their hdtv set (so far) won't fly
    b) 75gb=30 min of video uncompressed? Am I the only one who has thought about the prospects of compressing it? (surely not, unless you count the majority of (non-technical) aol users)
    c) Invariably, someone, somewhere will beat it
    d) Like most attempts to "protect" something, it is only an annoyance to the consumer and the 'casual pirate' (Media co's: These are NOT the same!)
    3) Replication.
The major vhs tape manufacturers *might* go for this.. but then, how do you get the masters to them? It would prolly be a huge bother to get this done (resulting in inflated prices.. more so than dvd)
Then again, I work in the cd replication business.. not cassette replication :P

    What I'd rather see?
VCD or SVCD-rw drives.. standalone drives that will record tv shows onto common data cdr or cdrw's.
This would quickly fill the consumer's need for a cd-based video storage option.. This could progress to dvd-r or dvd-ram versions when they are ready, to allow for higher quality or longer run times.

Of course, this will never happen because the media companies love to hoard every penny..

I wonder what the Internet would be like if it came about as a result of Big Media, instead of Big Government? I imagine that you wouldn't be able to print or download web pages, and many of the advances that came to the Internet, would never have happened.

There are several good anime that I like..
You should try to get a copy of these to watch:
    Love Hina (not released)
Hand Maid May (not released, this is NOT hentai, dispite how the name sounds)
Trigun (In US, dvd or vhs)
Photon (In US, dvd at least)
Dual (In US, dvd at least)

I hear Kenshin is good, but by all accounts the dub is bad :(
LH and HMM were both made by the same creators, They are both romantic, but LH is also a comedy
Trigun is a sort of sci-fi-ish western (still with guns/bullets tho :P)
Photon is a comedy, ya just have to see it :P
    Dual is sort of mecha

This is just my personal collection, there are hundreds of other animes out there, each with their own story.
If something is unreleased in the US or Europe then you'll have to either import it or go find fansubs (Please don't get fansubs for anything that's released in your area, Please support the people who worked hard to bring anime to your area.)
You could also find some Hentai, if that's your sort of thing.. not all anime=hentai.

Also, if you can buy the manga for whatever series that you are watching.. then that can help explain some parts to you, if you were confused at all. (I'm still noticing stuff in the LH anime that I didn't see the first couple of times thru)

Explore your tastes, find what you like and what you don't.. get a dvd with both english and japanese(or whatever language, with english subs) and find out if you like subbed or dubbed anime.
    Everyone is different.
