Apple Care is just an extended warranty and replacement service, they might still offer phone support, it would be mostly useless but apple has a habit of sending out all levels of hardware. I owned a macbook for a while and never had any troubles with it, a co-worker got a macbook pro for his art school (cause ya know Adobe CS only runs on mac) and it was stone cold dead in 3 weeks (and took a week for them to half ass replace the motherboard then it developed a creaking case which after a brief argument was complete replaced, great value for nearly 3500$ eh?) . Never mind the horror stories of gpu's and cpu's desoldering xbox360 style a few years back.
You are amazed that the computer goes to sleep when the lid closes and sound cards magically work, but yet you want to get a linux distro? What is this like your second computer ever?
ha where? Obviously you have not been to one or else you would not have thought that the only way to get a keyboard monitor and mouse is to spend hundreds of dollars. Goodwill? nah they ship them to a central location and Charge like new. Ma-pa places, they are too dumb to know what they have so you see a 100mhz pentium for 100 bucks. (its not my fault your original argument is full of fail)
Besides I dont know where people keep coming up with this being a desktop replacement, are you going to use a plug computer or a thin client in the same way as a desktop? and if you are in the market for a small computer do you want to use a 3 cubic foot 300 watt monster to run a local ftp server off of AAA batteries?
I have a dozen ideas for this thing and none of them is anywhere close to "uh derp lets log on to slashdot and pretend that monitors cost as much as a used car dee hee hee"
500 bucks for a decade old computer is a pile of money. And sure its compatible if you only want a word editor and a few other standard issue programs, start running demos on it and let me know
8 gigs is a 2 slot board you can pick those up for less than 40 bucks in desktop form if you dont mind a older CPU and yea a decade old, 16 gig requires a bit more
maybe next years 39.99 boards but its totally not needed at this point
yea if you want the overhead of compression / decompression on top of virtual memory.
ok lets put it this way, if you were IN CHARGE what would you want? your devs sissy slapping cause everything is in (compressed) swap or 100 bucks in ram?
So this guy does something personal and no one says anything, now he is doing something commercial and is going to throw a hissy over a what 20$ permit?
Thanks for wasting our tax dollars on your horse shit lame ass dumb fuck stunt dipshit.
Its not even that, its a 800 Mhz PPC microcontroller. SO you have a Power PC thats not compatible with the 68000 chips the original systems were based on with a 3rd party "re-vision" of how Amiga OS would have developed (it runs like a junky linux desktop from 1997)
As a computer its lame As an Amiga its incompatible As Amiga workbench, its FLTK with amiga icons and borders
and yes it will cost a pile of money, the older PPC desktops did as well (with all of above), if you could find someone to even make one
The problem is that the hard core Amagia users that never let go AND (this is the important part) still want their system in a modern world need to have their wallets relieved from that stress.
Listen I love my retro computers, they are great machines that still manage to do amazing things. But I am not under an Illusion that a totally different arch, with 3rd party developed software is the real thing. Amiga PPC is.
As others have said, you dont recompile the entire thing cause you changed one integer, but as others have not said you really should be testing in smaller chunks, you are not perfect enough to vomit out something that takes 5 hours of CPU time (which on the given systems is about a half hour of real time) perfectly the first time you try.
Its much easier to write a chunk and make sure it works than to write a freeking monster blob and go hunting for a chain reaction.
Besides if you bothered to watch the "How William Shatner Changed the World" thing on histroy channel a few years ago you would know the biggest inspiration for iPod was to be able to have a computer serve music on demand, just like in TNG
Design was after form... which is something current apple has lacked
Power PC with a custom rom and dreadfully slow in this day and age, probally will cost 2 grand, as we have seen before in PPC Amiga's... which are non functional with the real deal amiagas.
Linux has apps dumbass, linux has a good amount of name brand apps (java flash, firefox), and a metric ton of apps that are just behind the A+ name brand stuff.
What web browser are you going to run on BE or Hiku? Office? I mean if all you need is a notepad on a pentium 3 with a riva TNT2 then BE would be fine.
yea it has nothing to do with apple patenting no shit ideas, charging a premium for it, then dropping their customers in hardware support like clockwork.
personally I don't have the time or the money to deal with a spaz computer platform like it was 1980 all over again every 5-10 years.
I disagree, while it was hands on tits better than anything in the late 80's and early 90's, it has never really progressed past then and is IMO quite antiquated in its post Amiga days. Since I did not grow up in the sheer awesomeness of Workbench in its prime I am not tainted by nostalgia, though I do appreciate what it was and what it did back then, its more modern versions just feel like an old outdated system being shoehorned onto more powerful hardware.
That was with v4 on power pc Amiga systems, and I just stopped looking then because it required special hardware, and I could not just toss it on a old Mac, this sounds exactly the same, old crap no one can find at ease, running on specialised roms, trying to shoehorn a very old computer into modern life.
They would have much better luck actually updating the OS to run on modern systems, till then its a few grand I dont want to spend to get lower performance than an emulator. Amiga is dead, Amiga PPC is a pointless waste of time as its mostly incompatible with the real deals, and its expensive for what amounts to hardware junk with a very outdated system.
a 5 hour flight go anywhere a 5 hour drive go where you can and take what you can get a 5 hour walk go f yourself
For an engineering student you are not thinking this out very much, "like spaceX" really? where are these private companies "like spaceX", I promise you they are not within your bubble
That is my thought as well, male voices are usually deeper and lower frequencies do not carry as well or as clearly as higher ones. For example my wife has some trouble hearing me in the car as it drones down the freeway.

with 230 watt power supplies nearly maxed out? you would loose your cost benefit in less than a day in just power use
find a thrift store, bam 5$ vga monitors and 25 cent keyboards and mouses all day long
kindly pull your head from your ass please
oh you mean your 4000 with a 68k CPU? no fucking shit it still runs original OS, its still using a 68K cpu with is not Power PC

Bingo, dev workstations are not 199$ Acer's bought at K-mart

A pile of ram, or a pile of time as it thrashes your hard disk? Ram is cheaper than time.
Power PC with a custom rom and dreadfully slow in this day and age, probally will cost 2 grand, as we have seen before in PPC Amiga's... which are non functional with the real deal amiagas.

Amiga PPC's are not compatible with the original ones
no one said they were profitable, they probably float by on subsidies much like Uwe Boll, where they get a "nice try" check for failing.
