Might be something with the installer. The three pcs I used it in, I tried the portable version. Didn't need to edit any inis. Indigo and Juno detected Java on my Linux box fine, and on Windows using the GUI (with Ganymede, Indigo and Juno) worked fine. But then again, I have trouble getting Juno to look half-decent in my laptop even after editing CSS. Indigo worked fine, though.

I disagree that it is niche. With two (admittedly major) things, this could be the Linux distro to take over the desktop. A decent setup program and corporate backing. Seriously. If I could Google how to do X and be able to apply the solution for any distro on mine, just think about how much would that simplify things for grand mas and granddads. Corporate backing to push vendors to pre-install it and get companies to use it. I understand that it's a long way out. A unified front. That said, I wish you the best and I hope that I can get to contribute in some way in the future (too much of a n00b/scaredy-cat to venture into an open-source project now).

And in such instances I am invariably logged in. Has happened about 4 times so far. But no problems before or after booting.

Yeah, I guess in that context, you could even argue that murder (which claims fewer than 15,000 US lives each year) is a small problem.

There is a world outside the US, and many countries in which murder is a serious problem.

If these artists and programmers spend so many hours in to creating stuff, how come they spend so little time in pricing it? Often enough, it's one-price-fits-all. I remember this dicussion on facebook over the PHD comics' movie release, where one American said that if you can't pay $10 for streaming a movie, you certainly can't afford to go watch one in a theatre. Well, guess what? I can comfortably go and watch a 3D movie in 10 USD (and that will cover travelling and food costs for me, too). I mentioned in another comment that my college doesn't throtte traffic or block sites, and I guess they realise that us students downloading and pirating stuff is cheaper than having to buy licenses for all that. You have mentioned the music and programming industry, yet you forgot one of the most bloodsucking cuntish group that thrives on copyright: the scientific publications industry. The rates they charge are exhorbitant. In a country where (I read this in an interview) the cheapest kill cost just over 1 USD, why in fuck's name should I shell out so much for what is a result of patently stupid business practices, carried out by people who live thousands of kilometers from where I live, probably a couple of continents over?

Irrelevant. The GGP's complaint was that it was not configurable. And I know plenty of users who don't give a damn and use it the way it is. If you try to please every one, you end up pleasing no one. (Oh, and I switched to Linux Mint to avoid the same hassles, but ended up switching back when Precise Alpha came around because I hated their "everything's green" disease more than the button placement of Ubuntu.)
That said, I think the defaults are for Metacity, not Mutter, so if the distro had gnome-shell from the start, the likely button placement would be what you and I consider normal, as it is in Mint. Somebody should consider adding it as an option to the install or something, since no official Ubuntu derivative has a GNOME desktop as the default any longer. What with Xubuntu and Kubuntu and Lubuntu, I think it's a damn shame that they don't have an equivalent for GNOME. It might help them push the new applications they're developing like Documents (which might become irrelevant soon, now that Google Drive's here) and Contacts and maybe give their Office suite and other existing apps a boost.
