yeah i agree...this is a junk slashdot post if I ever saw one. At least cite reputable news sources, not one that puts "Gamergate" and "Social Justice Warrior" in quotes...
/. is the site I've been visiting daily since I "discovered' the internet in college in 1997...I can't imagine the site without you, but I'm hoping all the best for you in your future endeavors.
I still remember (unless im cloudy) when http://slashdot.org added http://www.slashdot.org as an alternate DNS, and thinking I was cool because I still used the old address (stupid now I know, but it seemed cool to my teenage self at the time:-)
I think my state (Massachusetts) tried to sue a tire company in NH for this same info, and eventually lost (could be mistaken, it was a year or two ago)...precedent?
There is *no* technical reason why adding a facebook widget requires access to your personal profile. Facebook devs could have easily set it up so this doesn't occur. It is the most shady part about facebook, and I am surprised there isn't more of an uproar about it.
The point is to show you did due diligence. No network is going to be 100% secure, and my argument is not about proving that "the other guy did it", but rather if your lack of securing your network could have you considered an accessory to the crime.
That's actually an erroneous legal idea....if in fact you have shown due diligence in trying to secure your network, and someone gets in, you are less likely to be found at fault. If however the courts can show that you knew the risks and consequences to having your network opened, and you had the means to do it, yet did not, you are much more likely to be held accountable.
interesting points, I was referring more towards the legal system in that you can't waive your constitutional rights and have that be admissable in court, though ianal:-)
Correct, last time I checked you cannot "waive away" your constitutional rights. The only thing that can "trump" the constitution I believe are international treaties.
Why do we treat copyright violations like they are the end of the free world? There is no reason that these civil issues between two parties need to get the federal government involved at the felony level. F hollywood and the legislators who are sitting in their pocket. Completely out of whack. And people think the patent system is bad! Not trying to flame here, but this whole thing really irks me to no end.
I work for the same type of company; the problem is that marketers live for their "numbers" and any change (especially downward) is either one of two things: Their campaigns are not doing a good job, or there is a problem with the software/reporting. Guess where they are going to look first?
There are plenty of resources for the banking community out there that can help you. If this is a US bank, remember that there are several laws and regulations you need to comply with, such as GLBA, FFIEC, FISMA, etc.
Nope, state wide. It was like that prior to 3 years ago. It's a town=by-town basis how late they can be open on sunday, but you can buy beer & liquor in any non-dry town (only a handful of those) on sunday. In Boston I think they are open till 9pm on sunday.
Sure you can, we have been able to buy liquor on sundays for about 2 or 3 years now. At least it's better than New York, where you can't even buy beer and liquor in the same store...what sense does that make?!
If what you are looking for is how popular or useful your site is, web spiders are not really important. Since they are not real users, they really don't tell you much. If you need spider data, you can always slurp that in from logs but honestly, the business managers don't really care about that data in general. It actually handles users who don't use javascript by also including an in the header of the page so that if javascript is disabled, you can still track hits and paths.

Can we not re-post crap from the "Washington Times"? This is slashdot not breitbart....
If you are going to post "advertorial" content SLASHDOT, at least mark it as such. I just lost some respect for this site.

Skype is not down at all, not the service nor the website....this should not be on the front news page as it is sending out FUD.
Armored Strike is great if you like games like scorched earth, and also has multiplayer.

I think it's "choose 2"?
no reason they couldn't send you links to keyloggers that would work on other OS's
well said

Use the language that best solves the problem at hand...and never trust anyone who only uses one programming language :-)
In how many other majors does a grade of 39 on a test = a B?
