The F-22 is most likely the last manned fighter the US will develop. Un-manned fighters are the future. It's probably better just to say computer system instead of identifying one of the sub-systems. The do have redundancy in their computer systems but it does not make them susceptible to failure.

Human pilots do not have the physical reflex's needed to manually control a high performance jet operating at the top of it's performance envelope. Without fly-by-wire fighter performance would be substantially reduced. And while I realize this article is about a fighter jet I will just mention that the F-117 and B-2 cannot be flown manually except in a few cases because stealth fighters have sacrificed aerodynamics to EM and heat detection. I am curious if anyone has come up with a way to overcome the stealth capabilities of the F-22 or B-2. The F-117's used in the first Iraq war required coordinated attacks by other non-stealth air assests to keep Iraq's air defense system as busy as possible and they also had to execute a flight plan that required them to enter into Iraq's air defense system at the borders of the air defense area boundaries. Air defense systems are broken into areas of responsibility and are most vulnerable where the area boundaries meet. I would think you could detect a stealth fighter using the wake turbulence caused by the plane. It would not be very precise but it would allow the air defense missiles to targeted close enough that the other detection capabilities can use to lock on. As it is now the first sign of a stealth aircraft in the area is the explosions caused by it's munitions.

Apple's iXXX branding starting with the iPOD to the iPAD has left it's competitors temporarily behind but their market share will eventually be whittled down as the Android based devices stabilize. Just like the MS versus Apple PC battle the proprietary hardware and software approach was crushed by the MS commodity hardware support and emphasis on software development support approach. Since the mobile market has exploded it was easier for Apple to change direction than for MS. They already had their hardware manufacturing network in place. When it comes to the deployments in the ME Obama's actions are not that different from Bush's.
The exit from Iraq was because the Iraqi government wanted the US to leave and the US obliged them. It only took about 1 day after the US left for them to start killing one another which seems to be the SOP in most of the ME countries. The only thing these countries ever agree on is thier animosity and hatred of the US. Remove the US from the equation and let them destroy themselves.
Every country in the world that has US military basses only needs to ask the US to leave and they will if they are not in the middle of an actual war. Of course all monetary related aid will also be eliminated. The US can project military power world wide so foreign bases are not necessary. The US should also start evacuating Afghanistan as fast as possible and let them do whatever they want. And the US should not even contemplate putting boots on the ground anywhere when they can use air assets to bomb the shit out of any enemy. This type of policy should be applied to every country in the ME and other regions. As long as they keep their killing and mayhem within their own borders the US shouldn't give a shit. This whole "spreading democracy" horseshit should be abandoned. If the US has to interact with any of these countries for commerce they can do so with whoever is in charge at the time regardless of the type of regime they represent. An amoral based foreign policy should become the standard. Humanitarian aid should also not be the government's responsibility. If someone is upset with that they can supply support using their own resources. If someone wants any US government help they should expect a invoice for services rendered with at least 50% due upfront.

They launched it ONE time and it was unmanned. Where were the re-use capabilities displayed? Where was the orbital maneuvering capabilities displayed? The project was started as a military endeavor because the Russians were worried about the US using their shuttles as a nuclear launch platform. The Russian program was cancelled after 1 flight. To compare that weak effort against the space shuttle is ridiculous.

Both China and Russia have a lot of advanced and gifted scientists but their projects have never been as good as advertised because of their governments interference and lack of money. Russia almost launched a full nuclear strike in 83 because their satellite system couldn't tell the difference between a normal atmospheric phenomenon and a launch of ICBMs. The one Russian who didn't push the button for the nuclear response was court martial-ed. So my original question stands. What other country has even come close to displaying US space capabilities? China has purchased most of their space technology from Russia and have been trying to steal any additional technology needed from other countries to get thier programs going. The real good thing is if they ever do get their shit together and try to land on the moon it will cause the US to initiate and fund programs to make damn sure China doesn't land there and annex it. China has shown pictures of their stealth fighter but have certainly never shown that it has the same capabilities of the F-22. They claim to be building a cruise missiles to take out aircraft carriers but so far have shown no signs that anything is actually being built and tested and by the time they do produce something shooting down cruise missiles will be easier than it is today. After all cruise missiles are almost as big as a fighter jet and it is not very hard to knock them out of they sky if necessary. The US has been lucky that most of the really smart foreign scientists have migrated to the US because their home countries lack the resources they need to actually develop their ideas. The US is supposed to filled with the dumbest people on the planet but somehow they have managed to become one of the major powers in the world in just about every category. People tend to exaggerate US capabilities and power for the sole purpose of being able to argue that the US is in decline.

Let me know when China, Russia, India, or any other country actual builds and deploys a true re-usable shuttle like launch vehicle. China has been announcing their grandiose plans for increasing their space capabilities for the past 10+ years and still have not shown the capabilities the US displayed 40 years ago. Let the Russian's use their vehicles for ISS supply missions (at least those that don't explode on the launch pad) and allow the US to spend it's time and money on other projects. It already has a reusable launch vehicle in the X-37x series of unmanned vehicles and they are working on producing a manned version. Both of the vehicles are the direct result of the lessons learned in the old Shuttle program and is funded as military projects which fall outside of the NASA budget constraints. The X-37 vehicle's are highly maneuverable in orbit and have atmospheric flight capabilities to make landings a lot easier than the old shuttles. The turn around time between reuse has also been greatly reduced.
The next step needs to use the lessons learned during the ISS project to build an orbital docking facility for re-fueling and maintenance capabilities to reduce the cost and risks involved in launching from the ground. If we ever develop a manned spaceship for exploring the solar system it will need to be built in orbit so creating an orbital facility now would provide more information on how to do it.
