Take a look at Book Crossing. It's a site about sharing books and is similar to your library project. With BookCrossing you register your own books. Then you can "release" them (leave at coffee shop) and hope someone finds them.
So far I've been very happy with the service provided by Netflix. Like you, I'm not planning to switch.
I must admit I do welcome the competition. I'm interested to see what Walmart or Blockbuster will add to make their service more appealing. - price - speed(how close is the distro center) - web interface.
You can have more fun reading Jim's article about the Stupid Users Instead of a headline like "Dangerous Fizzer Worm Attacks the Internet," how about "Thousands of Morons Open Obviously Virus-Laden E-mail Attachments"? I kind of like it. It has a light, comedic feel similar to headlines found at The Onion.
A guy at blockbuster told me I had to rent this film. I was pleasantly surprised. This movie shows the crime/action scene first from the police detective's point of view (Willem Dafoe plays a gay FBI agent).
I have been using popfile for a month now and it's doing a pretty good job of catching SPAM for me. I think it is currently running around 95% accuracy rate.
One nice feature I notice about popfile is that is decodes those SPAM messages that are mime encoded and looks for matches.
Pros:
Easy Setup for Windows Users
Web GUI for setup / configuration
Subject Modification - easy filtering for Outlook Express - also provides X-headers for filtering
Works with any pop3 email client
Cons:
pop3 downloading is slower
I also like to look to see which kind of words have a higher probablity of being SPAM than normal mail. You would be surprised.
I think corporations have the right to make contributions to elected officals just as normal citizens.
If corporations can not make donations, what about sole owner or LLC?
I just think you are hampering free speech by making limits.
Why not make it a requirement that ALL donors and their contributions are provided to the public? Maybe have a rule that elected officals, their political parties (soft money), and people running for office have to maintain lists of donors and their donations amounts.
I just have a few comments to add to this thread. I graduated from Texas A&M and according to Association of Former Students more than 50% of graduates are working in fields not related to the degree they earned.
To me, a BS degree means that you :
have the ability to learn
can complete a long term task/goal (graduation)
I also wanted to point out that some of my favorite classes had nothing to do with CS.
By the time I graduated with CS degree, I was sick of CS as well. I ended up going into the Military working in a completely different area. Four years later, I got out of active duty and started pursuing a career in IT.
Now my GPA in school was low but I did graduate and I still enjoy computers.
I made the conversion from IIS to Apache more than a year ago. A hard drive failure presented a good opportunity to make the switch. I was luckily in that the dynamic portion of the site was already written in php3. (Thank goodness someone else persuaded me in using php over ASP.)
I have read some good comments but here are my issues/problems with my conversion.
Case & filenames I never realized that this could be that big of a problem. When moving the site to Apache and Linux, I was faced with converting links and file names to the same case. The other issues you might have are references to Default.htm instead of index.html.
php3->php4 I found minor issues with some of the php3 scripts when running under php4. So I had to look at them and do some tweaking.
I believe that you and your company will be happier in the end by switching over to Apache and php or perl. It will give you more options if you decide to switch the operating system again.
I believe that text base ads can work and have worked for Lockergnome's website. Chris Prillo is the man that created this website and daily newsletter.
Chris Prillo also wrote a book title, "Poor Richard's E-mail Publishing" ISBN 0-9661032-5-4. His book goes into detail about creating newsletters and text based advertising.
Lockergome is one site that has shown that advertising can work if done well.

There is even a story in Readers Digest.

my two cents.

Instead every tax payer would have to write a check (or get a money order, etc) to pay their monthly tax bill.
