Yes, and consumers not paying use tax on goods purchased from out of state is evasion. I guess the question is should Amazon collect the sales tax and submit it to the respective states. It would certainly seem to be a more efficient solution than hiring hundreds of tax collectors in each state.
For what it's worth, the company I work for sells products wholesale in several states, and we have to report the amount (dollars) we deliver to Washington state to their tax bureau. Perhaps Washington has a law forcing out of state sellers to report in-state sales (WA was excepted in the article).
Amazon revenue is in the neighborhood of $15 billion. I have no idea how that breaks out by state, or what the average sales tax is (it's 10% in most of California), but lets assume 5% nationwide. That equates to $750 million in lost tax revenue, give or take.
I later found this article. A former security director from Ben Gurion is/was training MA state troopers in Behavioral Pattern Recognition at Logan Airport in Boston.
You have free internet access?
Otherwise, you can't see my site unless you pay your ISP. And if you want to see my site faster, then you can pay your ISP more. What's the problem with this.
The only problem I have with Net Discrimination is intra-protocol discrimination based on source or destination (e.g. degrade YouTube and/or promote Hulu).
THIS is what security is people. Patting down kids, strip searching the elderly, having your privates groped. EITHER you accept the risks of NOT having this security (and vote accordingly) or you accept that security searches only work if EVERYONE is searched.
It's not an either or situation. There isn't only one possible solution, juxtaposed against no solution.
"According to Raphael "Rafi" Ron, who served as director of security at Ben Gurion for five years, aviation security in the U.S. suffers from two shortcomings that Ben Gurion has dealth with and overcome. . . . Second, airport security directors in teh U.S. have faild to come to terms with what Ron calls the human factor - the inescapable fact that terrorist attacks are carried out by people who can be found and stopped by an effective security methodology."
I'd quote more, but I'm having copy-pasting. Read the section on Behavior Pattern Recognition though.
At the end of the video, the reporter suggests asking at the ticket counter if your kid has been randomly selected for extra screening. There is a code on the boarding pass if he/she was. Then he says, "Ask the ticket agent to be deselected."
my penis,...my wife's boobies,... my kid's pussy. (Sorry for the frank language but I believe in speaking the brutal truth.)
Zis ees vahy intahrestink, yes? You use zee clinical tahm for your own genitalia, adolescent slang verd for you vife's, and zee lewd slang for zee child's.
Now, tell me about your relationship vith your mother.
By the way, if you figure out how to do anything with a kid, even go to the park or whatever, and can guarantee that the kid won't cry, I want to know your techniques.
If only parenting were as easy as spawning more Overlords. Sigh.
Not all profiling is racial. The Israelis profile at Ben Gurien (sp?) airport based on a host of factors (e.g. nationality, religion, ticket purchase details, etc.). Those who meet certain criteria are pull aside not for a special search, but for an intensive interview with a trained security specialist, not a $10/hr contractor.
Maybe Google should, and state that because of the hostile practices that $ISP does, Google is forced to delay each search for $TIME.
I don't think I want to be used as a pawn by Google or anyone else in their fights, even if it seems to benefit me. There is no reason why we should trust Google or any other very large service/content provider more than the ISPs.
As for packet inspection, a perfect oppotunity to implement it widely, just wait until they decide to put noninspectable packages in the not-moving-at-all-lane-until-key-provided.
Hmm... perhaps the UK governments endorsement of this is a prelude to their announcing that MI-5 will be inspecting all packets for subversive materials.
Remember, remember the 17th of November.
Still, I don't quite understand how an ISP could "charge" a website for the services it provides.
If you host your own web/email/ftp server, you need to buy upstream bandwidth from an ISP if you want people to download stuff. They can currently charge more for 10 Mbps up than 768 kbps up (in the US), so I don't see how this announcement is that exciting. But I'm probably missing something.
they tried to claim it was a Federal issue (when no hurricane has ever been labeled as such)
Perhaps this is a bit of a nitpick, here are the Tropical Storms and Hurricanes that were declared Federal Disaster:
2010
Otto - US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico
TS Nicole - North Carolina
Earl - USVI, MA, NC
Alex - TX
2009
Ida - AL, NY, NJ

The underlying cause is the exact same thing that lead up to the great depression: The excessive consolidation of wealth. I'm not a bleeding heart commie, but it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out that when we have too much money in too few of hands, the economy suffers significantly.
Tax the wealthy. Not because it's right. Not because they can pay. Not because they have some obligation. Do it because it promotes a stronger middle class and leads to economic stability. The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few, no matter how rich.

This is fucking brilliant and well said. His mod points should go up to 6.
Competition means that the job goes to the lowest bidder.
While I generally agree with the notion that employers hold the upper hand in non-union labor negotiations in the US (due to their monopsony status), that does not mean that the job goes to the lowest bidder.
If that were true, then I would be an engineer at Google.
no restrictions on hours worked, no mandated breaks,
I'm not sure what, if anything, Federal law says on this, but in California you cannot work longer than 5 hours without taking at least a 1/2 hour meal break, and you must take two 10 minute breaks during each 8 hour shift. I don't think there are limits on number of hours worked, but after working 8 hours in one day (and/or 40 hours in one week) you must be paid 1.5 times your hourly wage. All of this applies only to hourly wage workers though
can legally discriminate,
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents employers from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It also prohibits discrimination against a person because of his/her interracial associations (e.g. marriage). However, Title VII does exempt members of the Communist Party of America (or associations required to register under the Subversive Activities Control Act) from protection.
It seems people out there... really do think something is exceptional because it happened on social networking sites.
And rightly so, in my opinion. It is far easier for a meme to gain traction on Facebook or YouTube than on someone's personal blog or [insert other low-traffic web site].
Yeah, I just grabbed the first Google hit. I just needed a reasonable number to make my point.
Tax avoidance /= tax evasion.
One is legal, the other isnt.

Way to let the terrorists win, Einstein.

Not to mention, if you are select for the body scanner, and you refuse the scanner and the grope, you are subject to arrest and a $10,000 fine.
Only at Ryder Truck rental locations, not airports. ;)

But the law in reality does not say that this is the case.
Actually, it does. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Labor_Relations_Act The law "limits the means with which employers may react to workers in the private sector [that engage in some "free speech" activities]."
I've yet to meet anyone with a Zune or a creative player who is as large a twat waffle as Apple fanboys.
I've yet to meet anyone with a Zune or a creative player, period. Which I think disproves the GPs point more immediately.
enough food to kill themselves with,
Actually, I think most of the food we Americans kill ourselves with comes from North and South America.
How incredibly stupid of you, to say that a set of ethnic groups is a race. Shame on you.
