Also, the whole "well if they don't want it to be copied they should add DRM" is hilarious. Oh you didn't want your product stolen? I guess you should have better locks on your storefront. I'm not guilty it's clearly your fault for not making your store impenetrable. And don't even counter that with the fallacy that something digital has no value, it takes time to create it in the first place. I also couldn't just walk into a university lecture for free even though it wouldn't take any more effort to lecture to me plus everyone else that paid. No you're just selfish, probably because you can't afford it what with having no job. Oh? Do you have a job? Well I'm entitled to get whatever it is you do for free because...reasons.

Sigh. Hosting is cheap as dirt. If you have that many users where you need a lot of bandwidth then you can monetize using a subscription model. Ads aren't the answer.

But the AC (who may or may not be you) made it sound like subscriptions were also a bad thing

Besides websites were around before the MBAs and marketers got to the net. Once we let them in, it's been downhill since.

The amount of bandwidth a site has to give out given its content/userbase is also a lot higher (and therefor cost is higher) than "before the MBAs and marketers got onto the net"

I agree with your interpretation. I even (unlike you, probably) kind of agree with the original author's point. I would be pretty happy if the Ubuntu team offered Cinnamon as an alternative of Unity. But of course they never will, because they specifically developed Unity to replace Gnome in the first place, thus creating all this demand for Cinnamon and Linux Mint.

There are a variety of different Ubuntu 'flavors', which is basically Ubuntu+Alternate DE. So why couldn't Linux Mint be like that rather than a much larger project that's harder to maintain?
