    They were all included in the primary debates because they were all running under a democratic ticket. That was the democratic primary. These are the presidential debates.

    So if some random homeless guy says he is a Democratic candidate, will he be included in the primary debates with other Democratic candidates?

    my rule on decriminalization is "if it is not physically addictive, legalize it."

    That includes alcohol. Does the benefit of criminalizing aloohol (again), tobacco, and heroin really worth imprisoning users and sellers, while putting our law enforcement at risk of life and life AND taking their time away from solving violent crimes?

    Personally I think conscription would provide this nation's youth, and in fact the nation, a long lasting positive legacy by having to give for once instead of take.

    The draft is not about youth GIVING their service; it's about the government TAKING (or they face penalty of inprisonment).

    it's certainly not the government's fault if Detroit was stupid enough to price it's cars like the higher-quality japanese jobs.

    Detroit wasn't stupid; they were SMART! After the import tariffs, US customers could choose between cheap American cars or artificially expensive Japanese cars. Detroit saw that they could raise their prices and STILL be cheaper than the artificially expensive Japanese cars. Why wouldn't they raise their prices? US tariffs hurt US consumers.

    You sound like a well-meaning person. If you have the time, you should read Johan Norberg's "In Defense of Global Capitalism". He was a leftwing anarchist who become a "classical liberal" (liberatarian) when he saw how global capitalism is the "race to the top", not the "race to the bottom". He documents how developing nations that adopt free trade are freer, have cleaner environments, less corruption, better health care, and LESS income gap between the rich and poor. I found his book very informative.

    If a country pays jack shit to it's workers, the tarrifs go back in the importing country's government's pockets who can then use it to help increase that country's competitivity. But if it pays it's workers better, in turn, THEY BECOME MORE COMPETITIVE, because the receiving countries' tarrifs drop, and the extra price they are able to get for their products stays in the exporting country as profits, instead of tariffs in the importing country!!!

    Why would the foreiegn country raise its wages? If their low foreign wages + import tariff > domestic wages, then HIGH foreign wages + import tariff >> domestic wages. Then NO ONE would b

    Why would the receiving country drop the import tariffs? They want to keep out cheap imports and FORCE people to buy their overpriced domestic goods. They only people helped by tariffs are the politicians' fatcat corporate buddies. Poor people have no choice but to buy shoddy, overpriced domestic goods.

    This is EXACTLY what happened to the US automobile industry in the 1970s. The US government raised import tariffs on Japanese cars. How did Detroit react? They raised their cars' prices to match the cost of Japanese cars + import tariff! So the US government's "helpful" tariff only helped Detroit executives to make more money.

    If digital TV really is that more bandwidth efficient and the current TV signal is worth more for non-TV data, then some greedy capitalist will pay for it. Just don't make the taxpayers pay for it without a choice! :(

    the problem with Xfce4 is that it's not as easy to install because you have to make special effort to start using it. This turns off aunt Tilly.

    If installing Xfce4 turns off Aunt Tilly, I'd like to know what turns her on..?

    Polluters would not be able to afford to pollute if consumers stopped buying the polluters' products. Consumers should stop financing polluters! I'm a vegetarian because I think meat production is wasteful and environmentally damaging. I am voting with my dollars. The market is greedy: it will follow the money. Look at all the hyped-up organic food markets and hybrid cars. The market is listening (albeit slowly).

    John Kerry is also a (Catholic) Christian. So I guess she must believe both candidates are qualified for the presidency.

    if it doesn't turn out to make (or save) money, it will go nowhere. Capitalism (and consumism) is ruining the planet.

    Actually, capitalism will SAVE our planet. If people value living on a nice, clean planet, they will pay for such benefits. The problem is not capitalism. The problem is the environment is a market externality. It's the classic tragedy of the commons: everyone uses (up) the environment, but no one PAYS for it. This is usually because governments disallow or dismiss environmental class action lawsuits.

    The Soviet Union was on of the world's worst polluters. Today, the US government is the worst polluter in the country. Why are they allowed to pollute? When you write the rules, they don't have to apply to you. For some reason, most environmental and endangered species protection laws DO NOT apply to the US government or military! >:(

    I can't wait for diesel-electric hybrids. Diesel has a bad reputation, but modern diesel cars (such as VW's) are actually cleaner and more efficient than gas cars. Combine diesel with an electric hybrid design and you can get over 100 MPG. Plus, diesel engines are most efficient when running at a constant rate, which would be a perfect match for feeding a hybrid car's battery. Diesel hybrids are a clean, efficient alternative using TODAY'S technology. I don't know why progressive car companies like Toyota are not more interested..? :\

    I was discussing oil depletion with a Green person last week. His conclusion was that all power sources are polluting or had bad effects on the local micro-climates (including nuclear, hydro, wind, and solar). His solution was to move back to tiny, self-sustained villages and avoid globalization. How or why would people do this? And I quote:

    "Fascism is very effective to get things done. It's a scary thought, but it just might be a good idea to save our planet."

    And even very expensive oil can be a good deal if you have very efficient machines! I pay $25 for a tank of gas that delivers about 300 miles. If gas suddenly costs $250 per tank, but my new car gets 3000 miles per tank, then I'm paying the same per mile.

    Actually, the picture might even be rosier. Let's assume that extraction, processing, and distribution oil to my car is 50% inefficient (I'm making this up). Since my new car is using 10x less gas than before, the amount of oil that actually needs to be extracted is more like 20x less than before because the inefficiencies of extraction, processing, and distribution are avoided!

    The greens' Precautionary Principle would put the burden of proof on the wind power companies. Those money-grubbing companies must PROVE without a doubt that their wind turbines are safe for the environment and don't kill birds. I don't know about you, but I don't want to risk my children's and my children's children's Earth to this dangerous wind power!

    Agent OJ, I have the same setup (Netgear WGT624 router and neighbor has Airport Express), but we can't get them to work. When connecting your Netgear router and your Airport Express, which is your bridge and which is your access point? When you say they should have "same name", do you mean the same SSID and channel #?

    From what I've read, the Airport Express requires WDS (Wireless Distribution System), but the Netgear WGT624 does not support WDS. A firmware upgrade scheduled for November will supposedly add WDS support. Since the Netgear router (apparently) does not support WDS, did you have to disable WDS on your Airport Express?

    Did you have to make any other Netgear router changes, such as changing the "WAM Setup"? Any other tips?

    Journaled file systems reduce disk write latency because new data (and metadata) can be written in one sequential write. Non-journaled file systems (like ext2) must move the disk head to multiple locations to update the data and then the metadata. For more info, John Ousterhout (creator of Tcl) has some good papers about journaling file systems, such as "The Design and Implementation of a Log-Structured File System (1991)".

    Black males' life expectancy is 68.6 years. White males' life expectancy is 75.0 years. For people born after 1959, Full Retirement Age for Social Security is age 67. Thus, on average, black males receive 1.6 years of Social Security payments, while white males receives 8.0 years of payments! White males receive 5x as much Social Security payment, but they probably did NOT work 5x as many hours! Without Social Security, retirees could keep the fruit of ALL their labor AND pass it down (with compounded interest) to their children. You can't do that with Social Security.

    Apparently, our system is working as the wretched Patriot Act was passed without any of our representatives reading it! Unfortunately, this is not uncommon.. >:(

    Don't forget that Social Security is racist and prevents poor people from passing their limited wealth to their children as an inheritance. Poor and non-white people die sooner than rich white people, so they receive less money than they put in. When they die, Uncle Sam keeps all their unreturned Social Security money. If they kept the money for themselves, they could have gather compounding interest AND passed the remaining money as an inheritance to their children. Instead of safe-guarding poor children's future, Uncle Sam takes the poor people's money and doesn't give it back.

    I really don't buy the "Freedom of Speech" or "Freedom of the Press" arguments--the process of electing a national leader is a serious process that should not be compromised by partisan media.

    Better to have NO media observation or inquiry for something so important? Wouldn't that make election rigging or fraud much easier?

    There is no such thing as non-partisan media. Better to have multiple, partisan voices than to have Big Brother's Ministry of Truth as the sole source of election news! This is EXACTLY why we have Freedom of the Press. If someone on the West Coast does not bother to vote because of something Fox News told them, then they are stupid.
