  8. Perl is probably the BEST first language on Tux on the Upper West Side · · Score: 1

    Lemme start off by saying that my first programming language is C++. Not good C++, mind you, most instructors/books/courses ignore it's robust Standard Library and opt for proprietary extensions to the compilers they have at their disposal. Usually this can be remedied by getting Stroustroups's 3rd edition and reading it on your own time.

    My second language, however, is Perl. I like Perl more than C++. I especially like OOP in Perl more than C++.

    Another in this thread noted that Perl's OOP support is a ugly. I'd say 'nonsense' to that. I find Perl's OOP support to be at least as elegant as C++'s.

    Don't get me wrong, C++ can be a fun language. But Perl can be more fun.

    Perl is expressive. One thing C++ prides itself upon is the fact that it can be such an expressive language. But I find that expressions in Perl can not only look more elegant, but take less time to code/debug.

    Any language can teach bad habits. Nearly every book I've read on C++ in school taught

    void main() {
    return;
    }

    as being proper code. This is abhorantly wrong - main() must return an int according to the ANSI/ISO standards.

    Yes, Perl is extremely powerful in the right hands, but it can also be a breeding ground for poor programming practice (even among experienced programmers).

    Agreed. I avoid M$ software like the plague whenever I can, but you have to admit, the beast knows how to make an input device - and fsck it up in a redesign.

    The M$ Natural Keyboard is a dream. I've heard quite the opposite about it's revision, the M$ Natural Elite. The Arrow keys are funky on the Elite model (The left, right, and down keys aren't lined up traditionally; it looks more like a cross), and I've heard the angle of the split is different. The non-elite has a more traditional arrowkey layout, generous key size ('specially that huge backspace key ^_^), a comfortable split, and you can raise the front.

    It kinda sucks since the Elite model is a lot easier to find than the better, non-elite model.

    BTW, this was all typed out with an M$ Natural. I really wanna get a sticker to cover up that ugly logo in it's upper right corner...

    MS Visual C++ does compile C++ code. I believe it's always supported C++ since at least version 2 (prolly earlier). It's up to 6 now, and still compiles C++ code fine. It was a lot more up to the latest standards than BCC 5 (which didn't support Namespaces and had buggy template support).

    Since I'm already using MSC6, I think I'll just let this pass. Didn't you hear that MS has stake in Inprise? I guess there really is no escape, other than GCC.
