  1. Scientists shouldn't dismiss the unlikely on Exoplanet Count Tops 700 · · Score: 2

There are scientists and there are scientists. If the scientists in your family scoff at the idea of alien life then their opinions may not have been well considered. There are plenty of very credible thinkers who feel quite certain that we will one day find life off the earth - Stephen Hawking among them. People who scoff at ideas which seem far fetched just because they seem far fetched have a history of looking quite red faced when later they turn out to be wrong. The earth is flat and the centre of the universe, and the Newtonian world being just two famous examples. It goes all the way back to the earliest discussions on the nature of matter. Greek philospher Democritus was criticised for his ridiculous idea that matter consisted of 'atoms'. We may or may not find other life in the universe, but to dismiss it as impossible is just silly.

  2. Aliens, the time to invade is now! on Toronto School Bans Hard Balls · · Score: 1

Attention all aliens. Earth is now ripe for invasion. Our descent towards a population composed only of pudgy, pale, velvet skinned meat bags of banality is almost complete. There will be no fight - we are all too busy playing with dolls in the shade.

  3. Re:Oh, the irony ... on Tech Site Sues Ex-Employee, Claiming Rights To His Twitter Account · · Score: 5, Insightful

Yes I agree completely. PR is a funny beast and someone at PhoneDog clearly doesn't understand that. People in general don't like seeing companies take petty action against employees (whether rightly or not). The damage they do to their brand will likely outweigh the value of the Twitter account they are trying to get their hands on. The longer this goes on, the worse the damage. If they weren't able to do this out of court amicably then they should have dropped it and gone on.

  4. Bollocks on Kindle Fire Will Be Hotter Than iPad This Holiday · · Score: -1, Offtopic

First of all, I'm not an Apple fan boy. But I went to look at a Kindle the other day and I can't figure out why I'd even pay 10 bucks for one. It was like being back in the '80s. The only thing I can see going for it is the battery life. I went home and downloaded the Kindle app to my iPad. Unless the new Kindle has leapt forward about 12 generations I would suggest Apple will still be the stocking filler of choice this year.

  5. Re:It's almost all China on IEA Warns of Irreversible Climate Change In 5 Years · · Score: 1

And I assume that you own no Chinese made products? It's all very well for everyone to bitch about China's pollution, but we're all very happy to pay for cheap manufactured goods when it suits us.

  6. Re:A Fucking Embarrassment on 2011 Ig Nobel Prizes · · Score: 1

Don't be such a kill joy and get a sense of humour! If you take a step back and look at what science has achieved over the last 20 years alone then I think we can probably afford to take the time to have an occasional laugh.

  7. In the deep end on How Do You Explain Software Development To 2nd Graders? · · Score: 1

Give them a copy of the C++ standard. Tell them if they don't understand it within one week Santa Claus will poison their pets.

  8. Re:And the point of this is? on Public AAC Listening Test @ ~96 Kbps [July 2011]. · · Score: 2

For you, probably nothing. But some people have inquiring minds. They are the reason we don't all live in caves banging rocks together.

  9. You may not know this but... on NASA Plans Mission To Study Martian Atmosphere · · Score: 4, Funny

A fact that not many people know is humans used to live on Mars. We fucked that place up and came to Earth.

  10. Re:Getty Images charged Dido for the photo... on Astronaut Sues Dido For Album Cover · · Score: 1

Really? What an idiotic thing to say. Should the manufacturer of the space suit also get paid? Should everyone who ever appears in any commercial photo get paid for having done so?

  11. Smells of desperation on Astronaut Sues Dido For Album Cover · · Score: 1

Sounds like someone's bitter to not be getting as many endorsements as he'd like. Probably spent all his money on coke and pros. Now that he's skint he's doing what every good litigious American does - sue somebody who hasn't done anything wrong for something you don't deserve.

  13. Don't cut this guy any breaks on Canadian Spammer Fined Over $1 Billion · · Score: 4, Interesting

To just update you folks who don't like to read and feel like we should cut this guy a break, he didn't just send annoying spam messages - he conned passwords out of users and then fraudulently accessed their accounts. If it was just the spam that would be one thing, but this is much more serious than that. As far as article summaries go this one is pretty crappy because it misses the whole point of the story.
