  3. Me too! on SPAM - A Different Kind of Identity Theft? · · Score: 1

    Mine started about a week ago with several bounced messages from yahoo.com. What did I do?

    1. Safely followed the link in the message to the website hosted on a DSL line from Belize (Mortage Refinance)
    2. Looked for contact info (none, just a phone 900#)
    3. Did a whois on the domain (all bogus info)
    4. Contacted the domain registrar with the bogus info and a quote from their terms of service.
    5. Asked that the domain be suspended until contact info is provide.

    Did it work? Not yet but I have hope.

    Ponder this if you will:

    1. User id10t buys a new Gateway with music installed
    2. id10t downloads Kaaza and procedes to share their entire hard drive
    3. Johnny Hacker downloads the watermarked music and cracks it
    4. Johnny puts it back on Kaaza unencrypted(but still watermarked) for the world(and the RIAA) to see
    5. User id10t is charged

    Finally stupitity will be a criminal offense. Of course it could be Grandma going to jail. I would like to see that prosecuted.

Will the megacorps be able to sneak into our houses and look at our photo albums looking for infringment? Will Al Queida develop a f2f (face to face) network to fool Tom Ridge and his merry band? Can I go faceless for halloween?

    We need to get him where it hurts, the checkbook. He very likely has a static IP address. Rather than redirecting to dev/null return them to sender with interest (mabye a 3meg attachment that repeats "We do not want or accept mail of this type" over and over). As he is paying for bandwidth, fill it with as much of his 'product' as possible. Let him pay for it.

    Geez. This is like sending out virus attachments to people in hopes of getting them to buy your anti-virus software.

    I got a virus notification spam from RAV antivirus (a cleaning notice and a 'virus' both from their servers). They even spoofed the postmaster@xxx.com email address to notify me the 'virus' was cleaned.

    What you see is a signal to noise effect. Scatteded daylight reduces the apparent strength of the beam without reducing the actual strength. Try this experiment:
    1: Get in the car an get on the highway
    2: Roll down the windows
    3: Set the radio volume to a comfortable level
    4: Roll up the windows
    The radio will sound apparently louder because the amount of noise is reduced. The actual amount of sound the radio puts out does not change. Science is cool.

    I have an Alesis Nanoverb that I use for sound design work. You can get them on Ebay for under $100. Acording to the specs you can get over 1200ms delay per channel (loop left out to right in for 2400ms or about 2.5 seconds). Correcting the delay involves turning a nice analog knob.

    The Alesis QuadraVerb has a full 5 seconds of delay per channel and should do the trick for you for about $130 .

    A couple of points:

    But you're blind, you're not going to be able to use visual (WWW) media anymore!

    WWW is not a visual media, it is and information media. All HTML is about is describing how to display information. Content should be able to be seperated from code.

    No, it's like he's blind and he's suing because he's unable to use a visual medium.

    It's like I open a restraunt and build an 8" curb around it with no cuts. I can say it enhances the beauty of my property, but it is an unnatural barrier to some people. If I changed my restraunt to a website and called the curb Flash it is the same thing.

    If he wants information about airline flights he can *pick up a phone and call*.

    Sure he can't eat in my restraunt, but he can use the drive through, it's the same thing right?

    According to the P2P Crime Prevention Act, property owners would have the right to disable, interfere with, block, or otherwise impair an individual that they suspect is using their property without permission. The bill doesn't specify what techniques--such as baseball bats, brass nuckles, lawn inplements, or pits full of sharpened sticks--would be permissible. It does say that a property defender should not kill, but it limits the right of anyone subject to an assault to sue if they are accidentally killed.

    You should file for a lien on the eventual "product". That should get their attention quickly. The "mechanics lein" allows you to collect your pay and expensenses and if necessary, to liquidate their asset (your code) in the 'real' world. If intellectual property is actually 'real' property it should work. Or at least get some lawyers all twisted up. Of course IANAL.
