  1. What chu talkin' bout, Willis? on The Celeron Casts Aside Its Crutches · · Score: 2

How is "slightly better than bad" a good option? If you have a Celeron 433 and you are only looking at intel products, then you are selling yourself short.

For 202$ you can get a 700 Duron bundled with an ASUS KT133 motherboardw/fan(you can prolly shop around and get it for less). For 30$ more you can get the same with an 800.

How much is the the Celeron 800 going to retail for if it comes at ~170 in units of 1000? Does that mean it will retail for 170$- nearly twice the cost of an 800Duron? How much is it going to run you in 3 months? The price of the Duron bundle above has already dropped 20$ in the past two months.

If the 600 Duron is about equal to the 800 Celeron(it's a little weaker, actually), then the 700 Duron is definitely going to be better.

Even IF you already have the motherboard you do, if you are considering upgrading your chip, since you are willing to jump past all the other celerons to the 800, I don't see why you wouldn't consider swapping your mobo as well and jump ship to AMD. Then sell your CUSL2(and the chip you likely would have sold already), and guess what... you probably ended up spending about the same amount of dough in buying the 800 celeron(probably less if you don't mercy the board away)- only you have a better machine now.

Or better yet- set up a family member with your old gear and help defray your upgrade costs(like I did). It's sorta like selling it, but you know it's got a good home. :) Sorry this is so long, but it bears repeating that this doesn't seem to be a good option unless you don't want to get the most out of your money.

Once you get into the AMD family, speed comes cheap, and will only be getting cheaper.

Egads I sound like an AMD ho... Then again... maybe I'm just a Mac user who wants to get the most out of any 'winblows' junk that I pay for.

  3. The blame game... on Apple's Ad Agency Goes After Mac Rumour Sites · · Score: 1

Currently there is no confirmation that Apple itself has given the nod for the action taken by *the advertisement agency that does their advertising*.

But even if it _is_ Apple behind the sting and not simply Chiat/Day working to protect it's own interests, I don't see why you lot should really care.

One bloke said that there's really nothing exciting when a company announces a new product... well go figure. That's because the rumour sites had it out the month before in ripped-out-the-guts detail. Perhaps if this _wasn't_ the case, a new product announcement would actully hold some excitement for fans.

The Mac rumour/news sites live for Apple, not the other way around. Fandome and support and 'getting out the message' is one thing, but it should always be about supporting the company. Although I'm sure some people think that's what they are doing, if a business has to question whether it's benefitting or hurting because of "issue B" then something isn't quite right.

I'm of a mind to think that if it is, in fact, Apple behind the "threat" then they are probably looking out for what is most important to them. That would be money, and that's tied to(guess who) it's paying consumers.

  5. And now the real story... on Has Linux Lapped Apple As Competition For Redmond? · · Score: 1
    From Apple History

"But he saved the best for last. In a ground breaking decision, Jobs announced an alliance with Microsoft. In exchange for $150 million in Apple Stock, Microsoft and Apple would have a 5-year patent cross-license and, more importantly, a final settlement in the ongoing GUI argument. Microsoft agreed to pay an unreleased sum of additional funds to quiet the allegations that it had stolen Apple's intellectual property in designing its Windows OS. Microsoft also announced that Office '98, its popular office package, would be available for the Mac by years end."

So in other words... M$ gave out a bag of dough and other stuff to Apple in return for stock that was basically worthless- not to "keep Apple afloat", but rather to save their own thieving arses from getting sued by the People's Champ. :)

  6. 4 thousand years before Ep 1? on LucasArts and BioWare to Develop New Star Wars RPG · · Score: 1

"For the game, LucasArts and BioWare are creating an entirely original storyline set some four thousand years before Star Wars: Episode I. The ancient era is dominated by an epic struggle between the Jedi and the evil Sith."

Wow... I mean. Our "human civilization" is only about 5k years old from relative stupidity to now. Is this game even going to have vehicles with spaceflight? Or is it going to be something like sword-wielding jedi? Note... sword _not_ lightsaber... :)

All things being equal and relative, to say our civilization won't have ships that rival Star Wars in 3,000 years would be madness. Which means that the setting should be somewhere around the year 1,000.

If they _do_ have spaceships 4,000 years prior to Ep 1, then they'd better have a darn good excuse- like an older race in the area or something.

  7. Umm... Old News anyone? on Could The Moon Power Earth? · · Score: 1

I had heard a discussion on a news radio program a good number of years ago talking about this very thing(they were also talking about hydrogen fuel cells). Back then strip mining the moon to acquire the resource was part of the conversation.

So they'd either have to develope mining operations on the surface and transport it back via shuttle, or find a way to "beam" the energy back to the earth from a plant built on the lunar surface.

When I listened to the radio show I often imagined huge yellow digging/dumping tractors tearing up the surface of the moon. Thanks for opening up old wounds.

I have yet to see it(the reviews have really kept me at bay), but I may just rent it with some friends(if it ever comes to video) to see if we can stomach it.
