You all forget that Microsoft, solely from a gamers perspective, has done some pretty kick-ass stuff (or at least put it's name on it, ex. AOE). This isn't necessarily a death knell..
A first post by me was 5 at one point, then got marked back down to 0. It was regarding the May 2nd DMCA protest that Slashdot refused to cover. Unfortunately I was not able to find it in the archives, as I know I posted it in a completely off-topic article.
I've seen conflicting arguments here, but I have a case where I'm considering using GPL code in a PHP application, and I'm wondering how it may affect me.
I want to use GPL code in a closed-source application.. I do not want to open up the source to the rest of my project, but have no problems with giving credit to the GPL author's code where it appears on the page. I'm getting the impression though that this would violate the GPL, and I would be forced either to a) open up my code under GPL or b) stop using the GPL code. Is this correct?
But how do you differentiate between all the users on the current systems? What if there are 2 different people, one on AIM, one on ICQ, both using the same nickname? Split it up into seperate sections as to which client they are using?

Might be a little weird if a bunch more IM programs begin showing up/getting popular.. hmm.
1. Serious traffic offenses such as driving while intoxicated in violation of 18.2-266, persons under age twenty-one driving after illegally consuming alcohol in violation of 18.2-266.1, reckless driving in violation of 46.2-852, speeding twenty or more miles per hour above the posted speed limit, racing in violation of 46.2-865, and other serious traffic offenses as the Commissioner may designate, shall be assigned six demerit points.
A person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives a motor vehicle on the highways in the Commonwealth (i) at a speed of twenty miles per hour or more in excess of the applicable maximum speed limit where the applicable speed limit is thirty miles per hour or less, (ii) at a speed of sixty miles per hour or more where the applicable maximum speed limit is thirty-five miles per hour, (iii) at a speed of twenty miles per hour or more in excess of the applicable maximum speed limits where the applicable maximum speed limit is forty miles per hour or more, or (iv) in excess of eighty miles per hour regardless of the applicable maximum speed limit.
Reckless driving is only a class 1 misdemeanor, but sometimes they will try to nail you on reckless endangerment:
Prosecutors must vigorously prosecute aggressive driving cases. Charges must not be reduced. When appropriate, the charges should be substantial, including vehicular homicide or reckless endangerment. Judges must treat these cases seriously and sentence offenders with appropriate severity. The courts must send a consistent message to the driving public that aggressive driving behavior will not be tolerated.
I'm not sure how we made the jump from retina scanners to Metallica and Napster, but this has to be a sign that Slashdot is saturated with this stuff.:(
I guess I can see the jump in a "If I listen to Metallica on Napster, I will want to prod my retinas with a hot poker" sort of way..
They had to sue to protect themselves, but I like The Register's idea.
Fortunately for Napster, we have the answer. Regarding Offspring, write a merchandising agreement and just send it to them. Then pay a designer to come up with a better-looking T-shirt and sell it on your own site. Then, turn a blind eye to abuse of trademark. But do watch what people do with it, then produce a better version and sell it with an "official" stamp on it. No one will mind if you sue someone who misuses an official tag. Thus you get loads of free publicity, you set up a profitable merchandising empire (and of course only the official goods will be cool) and you avoid accusations of selling out.
Actually, I'm in the process of dealing with the FBI about a intrusion on a system of mine, and so far they have been fairly responsive and willing to go after this guy. I only suffered maybe $3k in damages, but since my log info on this guy is really clear-cut, they think it's an open-and-shut thing for them, and are going to persue it..
Or so they say.. (fingers crossed)..
And if this article has anything to say about it..

Most of this is not really public business, but if some things aren't stated explicitly, it will reflect unfairly on someone.
As many people have heard discussed, there was quite a desire to remake DOOM as our next project after Q3. Discussing it brought an almost palpable thrill to most of the employees, but Adrian had a strong enough dislike for the idea that it was shot down over and over again.
Design work on an alternate game has been going on in parallel with the mission pack development and my research work.
Several factors, including a general lack of enthusiasm for the proposed plan, the warmth that Wolfenstien was met with at E3, and excitement about what we can do with the latest rendering technology were making it seem more and more like we weren't going down the right path.
I discussed it with some of the other guys, and we decided that it was important enough to drag the company through an unpleasant fight over it.
An ultimatum was issued to Kevin and Adrian(who control >50% of the company): We are working on DOOM for the next project unless you fire us.
Obviously no fun for anyone involved, but the project direction was changed, new hires have been expedited, and the design work has begun.
It wasn't planned to announce this soon, but here it is: We are working on a new DOOM game, focusing on the single player game experience, and using brand new technology in almost every aspect of it. That is all we are prepared to say about the game for quite some time, so don't push for interviews. We will talk about it when things are actually built, to avoid giving misleading comments.
It went smoother than expected, but the other shoe dropped yesterday.
Kevin and Adrian fired Paul Steed in retaliation, over my opposition.
Paul has certainly done things in the past that could be grounds for dismissal, but this was retaliatory for him being among the "conspirators".
I happen to think Paul was damn good at his job, and that he was going to be one of the most valuable contributors to DOOM.
We need to hire two new modeler/animator/cinematic director types. If you have a significant commercial track record in all three areas, and consider yourself at the top of your field, send your resume to Kevin Cloud.
dialasong.com has bee updated and joined the on-line world. With the hip new flash streaming software, everyone is just a quick and easy click away from grooving to the new tracks from TMBG available at dialasong.com. Besides that, dial a song is also back on at 718 387-6962. After months of pure frustration with our computer based system, John and John have returned to the analog scene of the phone machine, and although the songs don't change as frequently, they are fresh fresh fresh and now we have a two song policy so you get more songs with every call.
I remember seeing some article back in the day that listed the most popular BBS software by region, and like, only near Washington D.C. was WWIV insanely popular. Everywhere else, except for CA, it was hardly used at all.
Mainly, I wanted the code.. I wanted to go in and change stuff around.. and man, $70 as a kid when I was 14.. that was a FORTUNE to me. A lot of lawn-mowing and snow-shoveling:) And when I had that code.. wow, I was so happy. I remember the long distance calls on my 2400 baud modem to the nearest WWIV distribution site in NC to get the latest version when it came out, as I couldn't wait to get at it.. proving if you are passionate enough for something, you will -want- to learn it, even if you are young and inexperienced.
As a side note, if you were in the WWIV area, what BBS did you run? I ran The World's Address in Northern Virginia for some time, and started up a network called FearNet, that grew to like 3rd or 4th largest overall at some point - until everyone died and went off to the internet.
Actually, when I was 14, I started running a WWIV BBS, and I was probably one of the few who actually registered their software and got the code, which was C or C++.. can't recall.. or was some mutated form of C, I remember people referring to it as "WWIV C" for some reason. Anyway.. I cut my teeth on that, learning how to make small modifications, installing mods around the net, and stuff.. it really wasn't that tough.. as long as you can find a subject that interests them, I think they'll be eager and willing to go through some code.. at least, that was the case for me, I -loved- running my BBS and tweaking with it.
so I guess when they say Internet-Ready, they make up the cost of running cable and stuff by not installing windows, right? I mean, who needs to look at this thing that's called the "outside"?
You all forget that Microsoft, solely from a gamers perspective, has done some pretty kick-ass stuff (or at least put it's name on it, ex. AOE). This isn't necessarily a death knell..

The Post ran a HUGE story on Napster today, Chuck D, etc.
It can be found here.
Kuro5hin ran a piece on spammers and attacking them back today.. kinda an amusing read, even though I don't feel attacking people back directly is the answer.
Here's some info on it: here
Other searches of mine haven't turned up anything, so it may still be fictional.. anyone else got anything?

It's Utah. What do you expect? Utah's practically famous for this sort of twisting and warping of the laws to fit their morals and ideals.
Sad, sad, sad.
So this basically kills virus research if this goes nationwide?
I can't go asking for a copy of Melissa or ILOVEYOU now to examine it, as someone would have to intentionally send it to me.
How will virus companies be affected?
