Does anyone have a standard letter or comments we can cut and paste in there? I'm sure I'm not the only one too lazy/inarticulate to get my point across.
this will make me want to use.NET even more.. just think.. all of your company's data would be inaccessible right now, during the morning workday (at least on the east coast).
I'm going through enormous problems trying find ways to break even on my site (in my sig). Right now it's down as we're moving servers, but a) no one wants to advertise with us because of our borderline content and b) our host won't let us run adult ads. So we're between a rock and a hard place, and have been rejected by around 14 banner networks. We got accepted to 1, and then cancelled, as most of our users view around 200 pages per session. Even if they DID click once, that's still a horrible ratio.
I guess there are some sites banner ads just plain don't work for, and I'm one of those.:( It's a true shame about somethingawful though. His bandwidth bill must truly be ridiculous, and eFront has screwed his site up since day 1 of him moving there. I really have no answers on how people who run sites for fun are going to break even. Right now I'm paying out of pocket, but I can only afford to do that for so long. Then, like everyone else, the plug will eventually get pulled, someone will start up another site, it'll grow fairly decently, and they'll have to pull the plug too.:(
What a shame.:( Too bad bandwidth is so goddamn expensive. If the price of it was cheaper, and hopefully will be in the future, maybe this wouldn't be such an issue.
People who get all upset over losing the "prestigious-ity" (sp?) of an area code are probably the same people who throw a fit when their uptime on their box gets trashed. It's just a number, get over it.
who put these bozos and WIPO for that matter in charge? I honestly don't know how they got there or who they answer to, if anyone, and I am mighty curious about the situation, especially in regards to WIPO.
before we see professional athletes competing with bionic limbs, etc. The old days of playing Nintendo sports games with robots may not be far away, witness the AIBO soccer stuff, then this.. steadily getting closer.
Plaintiffs allege that (the defendant) has covertly, without consent or authorization, planted 'cookies' upon Internet users' computer hard disk drives and secretly tracked their movements across the Internet," the plaintiffs charged in a filing in Denver, Colo.
How can they do that? If the user has their browser set to accept cookies, and cookies get placed on their system, what is the problem with that? Seems like a case of people's ignorance, and instead of acknowledging that, they decide to sue someone instead.
Ahh, that's what I want. For my car to be a billboard for random corporations, for my friends to mock me for it, and get paid not nearly enough for the heckling I will endure.
Maybe you can use that $400 a month to get a prostitute, because I don't think you'll be picking up chicks in that car.
It's like anything in the world that has the gall to charge money for a service is evil in Slashdot-land. How dare you try to make money on the internet. For shame..
The chaff is finally being weeded out.. Scour SUCKED. I hope the whole website tanks, it used to be usable, but as soon as they hooked up with i-drive, it went straight to hell.
We expect on starting out with a T1/T3, then ramping up to whatever bandwidth we need within a 4 month period.. either the idea is going to take off or not at that point. Downtime is very "not good". I've already stressed the need for a UPS, but you bring up a good point about the blackout situation/generator.. hmm. Interesting.
I know going with a non-reputable co-lo, or finding one of the cheap co-lo's is not going to cut it.. if we go co-lo, we need something that is going to be up all the time, a way to handle server reboots when needed, and easily scalable. I'm located in Northern VA, so if anyone knows anyone in this area, I would appreciate it.. AFAIC, the closer the better, in case I ever need to go in there.
I'll be voting Browne today, switching my vote from Nader. Browne is clearly with it, and has a good understanding of how this country should be run.
I only wish I had heard about him earlier and more, but I guess I can thank the media partially for that. I feel so strongly about his stands that I would have become an avid supporter/activist, but now it's too late.

You're new here, aren't you?
Does anyone have a standard letter or comments we can cut and paste in there? I'm sure I'm not the only one too lazy/inarticulate to get my point across.
I am frequently unable (several times per month) unable to reach Slashdot, sometimes up to an hour or so per outage.
this will make me want to use .NET even more.. just think.. all of your company's data would be inaccessible right now, during the morning workday (at least on the east coast).
I can't wait!
and of course Slashdot is the pinnacle of reliability. Wasn't there just an outage yesterday?

What a shame.
Can I sue cell phone users if I go blind from second-hand radiation?
Really. I'm tired of this stereotypical slashdot whine.
Blah, this sucks, let's do it ourselves, the only alternatives are by corporations and ALL CORPORATIONS ARE EVIL.
God, I hate this place sometimes.

No need to worry, knowing Slashdot, the story will probably be re-posted in the next week. Just be patient. :)
Yeah.. well.. um.. that's ok though. :)

As long as they don't replace the cheerleaders.

Just thought I'd pass the word along on this really good deal they have.
Mmm, TMBG fleece jacket.

I disagree... I enjoyed Ender's Shadow quite a bit. Not as much as Game, but still worth the read/buy.

You mean they weren't talking about Wayne Chrebet?
"Take off, you knob."
"No, you take off, you hoser."
Thanks to those who have responded, first of all.

CNN.com took Florida away from Gore, and shows Bush ahead by about 3%.. uh oh :(
