    Nice to know the damn thing actually works... and it figures Leno has one! My turbo was considerably more garden variety - I had an '82 Yamaha Turbo Seca. Not quite as fast but still made a great sound, and was about $147k cheaper. :-)

    Ah, don't worry. With good people supporting you I'm sure you'll get what you want sooner or later.

    I prefer to think of "free software" ventures more along the line of art or music projects. Some things gain enough ground that they support themselves, but the majority are funded by more mundane activities.

    Hey, I'm the last guy around to defend the Christian Right, but that's simply not anywhere near true. It's not the philosophy of Jesus that's the problem, it's people who believe that God (tm) is somehow both all-powerful but and at the same time unable to take care of things without their help.

    They've done plenty of evil to point out without having to overstate it.

    FACT: There are make-believe religions. (Scientology, Moonies, Islam, etc.)

    FACT: There is true religion. (Christianity)

    You're kidding, right? Right? I have friends who think Catholics are a cult... seems to me a "real" religion is in the eye of the practitioner. Or the IRS.

    I've learned more than I'd like to know about Scientologists due to losing a girlfriend over their weirdness (I think they're total lunatics) but that doesn't make it a "fake" religion.

    I mean really, next you'll be dissing Rastafarianism. :-)

    Seriously though, you obviously need to have your lawyer call them. If they owe you money under one contract you don't need to sign another one to get it. If the money involved isn't worth an hour of legal bills, then sign and forget it.

    i was doing a lot of work on my Amiga (with the attendant Guru Meditation errors) and freaked one sunday morning when i woke up at my girlfriend's house, turned on the tube and found the Preview Channel's Guru Meditation screen! for a second i thought my programming errors were chasing me across town. :-)

    wonder if that'll happen with .NET?

    strangely enuf, i consulted for a (would-be) competitor of Prevue called StarNet, we delivered mpegs via satellite instead of sending laserdiscs around, and played them on NT boxes with the local cable schedule.

    Yeah, I did great stuff with OS/2. Warp was the ultimate DOS development platform (booting different DOS versions in each window), but even the last 16 bit (V1.3) version was really tight. I was running power plant air pollution systems on a 20Mhz 386 with like 8M of RAM, ran 24/7 like a charm with about 50 threads.

    It was just damn hard to install if you didn't know what you were doing. Sort of like Linux sometimes. :-)

    (Not trolling here, I've just had about 3 systems I never could get Linux on, as much as I love it. Ended up buying a VA Linux box!)

    From new, yes. But older ones hold their value quite well. An '89 911 bought in '98 is still worth almost exactly the same money today.

    It is another example of how the people in Europe are gutless and will let their governments walk all over them while taking an obsene amount of money from them in every conceivable way in the process.

    They also get 5 weeks vacation and years on unemployment and the taxes they pay reflect that.

    Also it seems to me that US residents are pretty gutless too for the way we've let our rights be taken away bit-by-bit on the pretext of the war on drugs, terrorists and pedophiles. To say nothing of a pie-in-the-sky missile defense that'll transfer a $100 billion or so from our pockets to the likes of Raytheon and Martin Marietta. That's pretty obscene to me.

    When I got my first CD R/W a 3-pack cost $39.
    I'm not gonna lose sleep over this one.

    Gas we've been sliding on for awhile compared to the Europeans, although it does hurt to put $45/tank in the Blazer and $33 in the car.

    Now the price of good tequila, THAT's a problem.

    'cuz life sucks and then you die. or you just get too old and/or fat to get in the bloody car anyway. i mean, point well taken and all, but i find my toys are excellent motivation to get my ass out and working. besides, a little self-confidence and risk-taking is really essential at some point if you're trying to do something career-wise.

    don't get me wrong, i have little sympathy for people eating $100 lunches while their car gets towed away, but sometimes you just have to make a fashion statement, and if it doesn't work out well hey, try again next time.

    It's not immediately apparent to me that there's a difference whether you open the source or not.

    How are you going to prove you couldn't have worked any harder or smarter to fit some bureaucrats' deadline? If we have to pass a government audit everytime we release an app or make a change to a webserver config then I'm going back to making cheesesteaks.

    If you don't like MS, then don't use them. If you use a service, check up to see they do things the way you like. But don't encourage some Congress-critter to get up my butt because *somebody* in the world may be able to crack my system. Why not just fine everybody who gets robbed for having an attractive nuisance?
