his name is brad, email him and i'm sure he'd be happy to do something for you, either send it to you or sell it or something.
congrats on getting clear on what life is all about at an early age- that's awesome.
i have to agree with the sentiment that once you KNOW that life can only get better from the low point of jr high and sr. high, then life actually tends to get better whether you like it or not.:)
i definitely think, in retrospect, that the crap i went thru made me a stronger and better person. "that which does not kill you only makes you angry" or something.:)
first - sorry, i shouldn't have bothered with my previous post. it was kinda pointless. i WAS shocked that i got FP tho, first time ever. not even intentional.
anyways, my 2 cents- i think the whole thing about bullying is pretty simple. some kids are jerks, some are not, and the rest float in between somewhere. The jerks make life hell for the "easy targets", the defenseless who won't garner any sympathy. witness the phrase "man, look at those pants. he had it coming. snarf snarf snarf". coaches push to fight against the weak- so the jocks naturally gravitate towards the oppression of the weak.
the worst thing about all of this is that when there IS a backlash (columbine etc) the only thing that happens is blame is thrown around and the easy targets become easier. according to a friend in high school, the school shootings that have been happening actually caused an INCREASE in the violence and general crappiness in his school. the jerks in the school used his long blue hair as a target- one even tried to plant a "hit list" on him. he's been frisked numerous times by a not-at-all-attractive vice principal, more than anyone else and on very shaky grounds.
my point is... crud. i forgot. i think it had to do with the fact that being a teenager sucks. it always has, and always will. someone told me "these are the best days of your life, jeremy"... i wanted to kill myself then.
on a clean install, 98SE is not bad.... not good, tho. this is why (besides the file security issues and such) it is not used in a corporate environment more. NT, on the other hand, has not been mentioned once here. Of my 3 servers here at the office, all 3 run NT with relatively mainstream hardware. Total downtime of all 3 combined over 1 year of operations? About a day. Total. This includes the memory upgrades i did a few months back.
Check out 2000 before you discount all of windows systems. It's pretty nice; even my Linux-runnin'-windows-bashin'-billgates-despising friends agree with me. One even acknowledged (GET THIS) that microsoft got it right for a change.
wierd to hear, but true. Don't confuse the 9X kernel systems with NT kernels... the 9X are acceptable only for newbie home use. NT and 2K are what you should be comparing your linux monster distros to.
"I don't care about the clueless people. Let them run Windows. The important parts of the world already accept Free Software. "
oh my god.
any relation to Marx? Not to say that linux isn't better than windows, or nt rules, what have you.... but that line could have been part of a communist geek manifesto.
and i'm SURE your homepage is REALLY 2600.com.... sure it is.
you're so 31337 mistar hax0r can i bowwow d0wn b4 joo?
not to sound pro "wintel" (oh, the VAST conspiracy that is capitalism), but ummm...
microsoft and apple both stole their ideas for the gui with a mouse from XEROX. one implemented it faster than the other, and one with more commercial success than the other.
rip on ms all you want, i do it too. but at least i get my facts straight.
and btw: it seems to be universally accepted in the financial world that it was steve's "genius" that brought apple back to its knees and near death. sure, he started out with a wonderful concept and did well, but hey... megalomania can only drive a company so far, then you have your standard revolt and coup.
the job security thing was just a joke, by the way. didn't mean to imply keeping people dumb was for the best. i DO think that people should shop smart in ANY purchase. what do you do when you go (to keep the auto analogy alive) to buy a car? you read up on it, research what it is, etc. and if you don't know for sure, you grab someone you trust who knows this stuff.
most importantly, you buy from somewhere reputable. in south africa it may be different, but here in the states when a company pulls that sort of crap they are pulled into court for fraud very quickly. they lose credibility in the geek community, which means their corporate sales die off, and then they lose their businesses altogether.
as to the ripping people off for services, this happens everywhere. my wife deisgns web sites, and comes across other designers who totally scam their customers. same deal with programmers, database people, consultants, etc... this is part of the reason i say that ethics classes are so important.
i DO wish users in general were more educated about computers, cause it would make my life easier as a win2k admin, but hey. that's why they pay me the (not-so-big) bucks. i gotta deal with people.
thing is, most kids are never going to have any use for knowing HOW a computer works. thye just need to know it does, and what the process for getting from point a to point b is.
this is much like a car- you really give a damn how the gearing system interacts? you just know not to drop it into reverse at 70mph. (i hope:)
most people have no need to know this stuff, let alone have it taught in elementry school. i think that advanced classes in computing should be offered at the high school level, much like a vocational program, so that a kid going into highschool can go thru a program which teaches him/her about programming, different operating systems, networking and routing, and general engineering as well.
the biggest things missing from the cs courses in any school, imnsho, are ETHICS and PHILOSOPHY. very very very important, probably the one thing that a person with a BS degree has over someone that is certified.
besides, teach everyone HOW a computer works and make them all '31337 haxors' like you and:::poof::: we're out of jobs.:)
anyways, in rgards to w2k - yes, it is being used. it is rare, but ramping up. i just installed a 2k server as part of our nt network emulating a pdc we took down, and it works beautifully. it is one of the 2 dns servers we have, and in the 4 months since i installed it, we have had 100% uptime on that system.
my school just upgraded all (read: ALL) of their servers to 2000. this could maybe be because they teach 2000 cert, but hey.:)
2000 is gaining acceptance as ppl realize it isn't 95, 98, or nt. it's better than all of them. it's gonna be around a while, linux fans... i know, it must suck to admit, but ms actually put together a good os for a change.
now if only we could get a beowulf clu- oh, sorry.
interestingly, microsoft will install datacenter to your needs and specified hardware, afaik.
in fact, you can not buy win2k datacenter on its own- must be installed by a retailer (and not your local store, we're talking behemoths here). why that is, i'm not completely clear. from what i understand tho, it is written very specifically to follow some sort of guidelines with high end hardware, and every implementation is different.
as for why there's a double standard, well... corporate culture sometimes (whether justified or not) seems to prefer staying with the tried-and-true. yes, linux might have.3% more uptime than windows, but those corp whores above you freak out when they see you hacking at their systems in an effort to make them run better.
"open source" they think, "that means ANYONE can look at the code, and how secure is that?" talk until you're blue in the face, you won't convince them.
fact is, nt worked. and worked reasonably well for a long time. 2000 works. and works better, and probably will be around longer than nt and in a wider variety of uses.
whether or not linux is a better os doesn't matter because of the previous paragraph. it's like my dad and ford. he buys the damned things because he had one as a kid that lasted for 10 years without a problem. so now he swears by it. (freak:)
(((look out, a not-anti-m$-stance on slashdot! duck and cover! flame away!)))
small point here, figured as an mcse i was obligated to point some stuff out.
linux hardware support seems spotty to me- on the one hand, you have wonderful support for many archaic or not-so-common devices which are not supported by ms, but on the other hand, the number of devices supported isn't quite as large. this seems to be changing, what with the device manufacturers recognizing linux users as having buying power previously thought to be nil.
other point - w2k does use a cli, and somewhat extensively in some cases. in fact, if you load up in directory services restore mode, you are forced to a cli. in class the other day we started a damned effective dhcp, dns, and active directory global catalog server on the same box from the cli. it ran nicely, but not so pretty. i know, in comparison to linux, it is not a cli system that would be preferable to use, but hey, i've got a p3500... why not show some pretty stuff on the screen?:)
i guess why i like w2k boils down to a few small things- it's pretty, it works, and it's pretty.:) actually, check it out if you haven't... it's ms' first truly deccent os, as far as i'm concerned, since DOS. (or nt3.51, MAYBE)
but back to the subject at hand- what the hell was it? damn. i forgot.
sorry, figured someone had to ask that here, so i did it...
congratulations, enjoy this for all it's worth!
sleep is probably a moot point for about the next year, but hey... who needs sleep, right?
strange thing, i was reading through the/.'ers comments (i RARELY post), and i was wondering if anyone would point that out!
coulda sworn/. had some skeptics.
who cares about the computing power of a mouse brain? doesn't it seem a bit more farfetched to think that in 10 years we're going to have nanites rummaging thru our brains, "beaming" in experiences?
at that point, i'll be glad i have my MCSE. god save you if win2010 crashes in someones head due to bad administration.
i think that something important to remember, though, is that the economy doesn't support products that scare the great majority of people.
of COURSE there's substantial doubt; if there wasn't, i'd be worried that our science community is a bunch of neophyte morons who jump on any "pop-sci" possible. but the thing is, that of all the wierd things in physics (which includes quantum physics and its propensity towards complete and utter illogically strange things), black holes aren't that wierd in comparison, and if they can be proven to exist (without say landing a man on them... sorry, there was a joke there but i guess it wasn't funny so ON with my rant) it could open up whole new doors in theoretical physics.
not to mention the fact that something as advanced as this could do wonders for the telescope-usin' scientists in general, even if the only thing it would do is add one more telescope to the sick time sharing system they have going on.
as for this being vaporware? i thought the ISS was too, but hey... there it is. neutered, yes. but it's there.
i think the entire point is....
holy crap, let's drop our pants and run around excitedly for a few days and act hysterical! woohoo.
but then again what about 10 years AGO?
did YOU think there would be an international space station?
\
how about news stories centering around computers every other night?
or how about nanotechnology coming of age?
one GIGAHERTZ machines?
personal communications equipment ala star trek?
i don't know.. i still think this right now is really exciting. 10 years from now.. now that'll be interesting too, i hope. assuming ebola doesn't kill us all, that is....:)
every time something this cool happens, i get more of that wonderful "i'm living in the future" feeling.... maybe it's me, but once in a while don't you feel excited about NOW?
i mean, only a few years ago black holes were just some ludicrously unprovable idea. now we're gonna LOOK at them, or at least their even horizon.
neat-o.
i don't know... i get REALLY irked when ppl think the space program is useless, and even more irked when computer geeks get that way.
why? simple enough- without the advances made in computing BECAUSE of the space race to the moon, this conversation wouldn't be happening.
other benefits?
lesse... my cousin would have died by now from her cancer if the medicine to save her life hadn't been researched, and guess where the contributions came from? oh gee - zero g crystal growth.
what else? hmm.
if someone had decided that the space program was a waste of money that could have been better spent on earthly projects early on, then it's pretty simple- weather forecasting, spy sats, communication sats, etc would all be a thing of science fiction.
fiber optics? kiss em goodbye.
pure science may be costly, but the greatest inventions and the best benefits to society ALWAYS come from pure science, either as a direct or indirect result.
and space exploration is, without a doubt, pure science.
'end rant
(sorry, i am a lowly and crapped upon VB programmer.:)
this year? american beauty (i know, it's a year old but hey.... it's worth seeing again.:) AMERICAN PSYCHO. i have never seen a movie until now that i could honestly say i liked as mch as the book.... see it now. why are you still reading this? go! hey lazy.... get up, kill the puter, and go see this movie. you think i'm kidding? huh? you want a spanking???? crud. sorry, guys... bored at work again.:)
it's simple to funnel the money back to the musicians - GO SEE THEM LIVE.
most revenue for most bands (After signing w/ a major label) comes from concert tours.... they get crap from the cd sales.
BY DOWNLOADING MP3S YOU DO NOT HURT THE ARTISTS. by buying cds you give the rec. company more power to dick with prices that already benefit no artists. except maybe, of course, well.... metallisucks.
seems simple enough to me: as a musician (which I am), I want my music to be heard by a large audience, and I hope to make money off of it so I can focus 100% of my energy on making more music. MP3.COM and Napster are a major help to me right now, as anyone can get their music out for free (or cheaply) without signing ones' soul to the record companies. who makes $$$$ on the cd sales? not the artist, unless you are Metallica or Dr. Dre and have the clout to sign a record deal to profit themselves. Most artists make their money where they should- playing live in front of a beer-soaked audience. THIS SHOULD NEVER CHANGE. The recording industry will have to change, and grow up... but, guess what? like the bitchy little brat it is, it will go kicking and screaming. hey metallica- little message from me if you ever read this: you're still the same bunch of dirtballs who revolutionized the metal scene... but now your fans hate you.
go to http://zedd.cjb.net his name is brad, email him and i'm sure he'd be happy to do something for you, either send it to you or sell it or something.
:) just because i'm bored at work. sorry to disturb you.
he has it on his car as we speak, in fact. he's gotten a lot of crap from people about it, and he seems to like that. :)
i don't much care about the mod points. i'm still geeked that i accidentally got first post.
!!!!!!!!! w00t !!!!!!!!!

hey, when i took acid, -i- was a visionary too.
AND because of technology, it's ridiculously easy to obtain a copy of one's very own credit report.
either go to a local credit bureau, look up freecreditreports.com, etc....
and if any of those nimrods listed up there would have done this, they would have seen exactly what was screwing them.
