here's the page i was talking about http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/compl exspira l/demo.html but apparently it also works in IE 5 for mac, go figure. it seems to me that if microsoft wanted IE to be standard compliant it wouldn't take them long. The question to ask is, is this kind of feature worth breaking your webpage's compatability with IE with? If there were compelling features in following standards then people will do so, most people care more about what they can do with their technology than following some standard. This is evident with how many webpages choose to be "best viewed with netscape 3" back in the day.
well that might be great for the developer who cares more about following standards, but why should the end user switch? IE shows any page on the web without a problem, sure there's the occasional security hole but the end user doesn't care that much about those (look at how long people has run win 9x/ME). However if there were FEATURES in the standard that mozilla supports and IE does not, and these features are actually useful and developers will use it, then developers will start writing for standards and mozilla will gain market shares. Rather than pointing to the standard supporters of mozilla should instead point out the advantage of using the web standard (other than because it's standard). I would love to see a tutorial that shows me all the neat things i can do in mozilla that i can't do in IE (i'm not talking about tabs and ad blocking, i'm talking about things i can do when writing my webpage). I remember seeing a link on a comment on slashdot with a page that only would work in mozilla (it had a nautilus shell in the back ground and when you scroll down the page the nautilus shell stays in the same position) someone please repost that if you see it.
you're right in some respects as a document doesn't really specify the standard of practice, a standard should really document current widely used practice (how people write webpages) and allow products to adapt their products to fit the current practice. But IE really isn't THE STANDARD seeing as how over 90% of the websites people view works in mozilla, the day that 90% of webpages only works in IE then yes it's the standard. it doesn't really depend on how widely the product is used, but how widely webpages are only designed for it.
Don't encourage those who make crappy commercial stuff!!!!
well i wouldn't call it crappy commercial stuff, the software itself isn't inferior by default because it was closed source. And blender definitely is a cool app. By opening up blender they're encourging the use of open source in software engineering.
i don't see why/. shouldn't post this article, it's a great example of linux being used in the real world by a successful company like HP. This would of been interesting regardless of what distro it was. in a time when Redhat seems to have made themselves the standard it's great to see HP step forward and choose an alternative. Having corporations use different distributions will drive the future of linux making sure that software vendors build their products to work on all linux distributions.
actually if you know a little about the psychology of influence, people do tend to equate high price with higher quality. it works even better if you first raise the price of your product then put it on sale for a limited time. usually this works for regular consumers and not people who tend to actually think about their purchasing decisions before they make them.
the main thing is the with JVM you have to program in Java. With mono you can program in any language you want and compile it for mono. this is great cause it allows code reuse, you would be able to use the work of others in your own work even if their work isn't written in the same programming language. As i understand it the CORBA stuff in GNOME does the same thing except that mono solves the problem with smaller objects (or whatever they call it).
even if that happens though the primary goal of the mono project isn't to interoperate with windows apps written for.NET. the point of the project is to make programmers lives easier by providing the tool that would make programming for open source OS easier. MS can't crush the project because it doesn't rely on anything more than the standard they submitted to ECMA. And the development tools are nice even if you wouldn't be able to run MS.NET programs.
any word on what's planned for Gnome 3 yet? Gnome 2 looks like i'll provide many of the things lacking in Gnome that everyone's been screaming for. But i'm far more interested to see what the Gnome team has in mind now that it's done cleaning up Gnome and are now ready to write Gnome 3. Both Gnome and KDE provides much needed components to the linux desktop but none of the work has really been innovative. The KDE people never aimed to go beyond the current idea of a user desktop, but the Gnome people looks like they're far more motivated to work on something more interesting. Miguel de Icaza seems to be someone who's more interested in pushing the envelope of the desktop.
i wonder how much heat this kind of memory produces, if it's purely resistive then isn't all the power it consumes turned into heat?
not so much worried about not being able to reboot anymore all you'll need is some kind of reliable bios flushing routine to flush the OS out of active memory if it does crash.
To anyone that is disappointed with the evangelion ending. Know that it's widely accepted that the last two movies are held as the REAL ending for evangelion. Essentially the movies says the same thing as the last two episodes, but with MUCH more money!
The story that i've heard is that the last two episodes resulted from the Studio running out of money at the end of the production of the series. Two years later the studio made it up to the fans with the release of the movies and redoing the ending. And IMHO the movies are the best anime out there, sit back and prepare to have your mind blown to pieces. It's actually more appropreate to watch the series up to the last two episodes and then watch the movie ending.
riiiiight, lets completely suffocate kids by placing them in this controlled sterilize environment and manipulate their actions at every step, cover their eyes to whatever you don't want them to see, god forbid we allow young impressionable kids to live in the real world.
What complete bullshit! morality is not something you learn through positive reinforcement, morality is something you develop on your own. if we can just point to the bible and throw the rule book at everyone who behaves from what you perspective immoral then it's not really a problem with personal morality as it is following orders and brainwashing people.
Shit nigger, don't you know i was playing? Yo it's all love bitch. and if i over did it, My bad. Truth is you right, them linux appz are wack, i dig the comment on MS. MAD PROPS TO MICOSOFT! Don't be pissed, yo no you my nigger?
I'd like to give a Shout Outz to my boyz, and my bitch with the wicked sweet ass. NAPSTER RULEZ! Peace out!
well aren't i glad that "EVERYONE" is into it, la di da for everyone. i'm glad kids these days are wise enough to adopt made up words used by rap and crappy teen movies. it's so wonderful to see that a bunch of dumbasses can go on mtv for a few weeks and not only automatically become cultural Icons, but all of a sudden scholars of linguistics too.
no that's actually not what i'm trying to say, i went to american schools. my problem is with ebonics language that teens use, the day that i accept "ghetto" as a adjective is the day i hang myself with electrical wires! I'm conserned that post on slashdot uses ebonics to express their thoughts, because this site is not only read by moron teens who follow the trends. older people or people in other country who read slashdot may not understand or appreciate the kinda language. some Jewish grandmother is probably having a heart attack somewhere in germany seeing the word "ghetto" used to describe fucking software.
the apps are still as ghetto as they were 6 months ago
i'm sorry would you mind defining this colorful term "ghetto" for me? i'm afraid i may not be up to the high standards of american education and do not possess the amazing vocabulary that american teens are capable of these days.
shit i've had enough hearing you bastards bash netscape for no apparent reason. alright we all know that netscape isn't exactly the company to trust when it comes to standards. but this is just silly, critizing this product for having a few intergrated links to netscape is just sad now. look people they haven't done anything wrong or unexpected, they haven't violated to GPL, they haven't broken standards by introducing their own shit.
everyone expected netscape to put in a few netscape or aol addons to mozilla when they release the product. these people have to generate revenues somehow you know? i don't see anything wrong with that. it's not like they have a popup ad that's always on top and closing it would render the program unusable. there's no market for selling browsers anymore thanks to microsoft. having a few links and making you sign up to a webmail service isn't exactly that much of a pain. yes they're trying to make everyone use the same service it's AOL for god sakes. but it's not like they force you to run AIM or shove cnet news up your ass.
it seems like most people here are just bashing it just because it's from netscape. when i installed the release yesterday i had the same feeling, i thought they released it a month too early and they could of waited till all the standard bugs were fixed. but i've been using it as my primary browser since yesterday and it's changed my mind. yes this leave a memory leak even after closing (im in windows). yes it takes longer for it to load at first. but it's very usable! i think it's good enough to be a commercial release, waiting another month isn't gonna fix anything. they've resolved all the speed issues and it's very frigging fast.
yes the nightly builds are more updated but it's the friggin development branch! you think a lot of companies are gonna randomly pick a mozilla nightly build and run a business around it?
i personally will keep running netscape 6 cause i like it. at the same time i'll keep experimenting with the mozilla nightly builds just because they're cool. im pretty friggin impressed by opera too. you can run what ever the hell you want. just don't insult the work of other people just because there's a department called marketing and one called management that decided to add some input to keep the company from going bankrupt.
ok, i agree that these activist groups are stupid... but there are scientist who probably know a little more about the greenhouse affect and chemistry than you or me, and they support the theory. and not all of the people who support the theory are selfish. listen to the scientist who support the theory talk, they're do care about humanity.
yes the earth is a self-regulating atmospheric system, but only in the sense that the anything that happens to the atmosphere will ballance out in the long term. but that doesn't help life on earth much. just knowing that in ten thousand years the atmosphere can support life again doesn't replace all those species that went extinct. that includes humans.
the data over the past 30-40 years show that while industial activity has increased and CO2 levels rise, there is a direct correlation with the how fast the polar icecaps are melting. now maybe the global warming theory is incorrect (if it is then we're really in troble cause we have to spend more time finding out what's really causing it) but it doesn't change the fact that we are seeing highly irregular increase in the mean heat levels that are trapped in the atmosphere.
shit who the fuck care what the hell is causing it, all i care about is staying alive for as long as possible. and that's not gonna happen if the fucking polar icecaps fucking melt and human goes extinct or is forced to mutate because of changing climates. so i don't care if these pencil neck dickheads are right, all i care about is fucking survival, fuck if it's natural we die, if it's man made we fucking die, so it doesn't fucking matter!
the idea of linux for the masses very well may fail. i don't think any of the linux companies expected to appeal to the home destop market anyway, however productivity tools like a good file browser and an office suite may just bring linux into the office space and i think that's just what they're aiming for.
fuck unbiased jornalism, when ever a person says he's completely unbiased toward an issue you know they're full of shit! people read slashdot because they are fucking biased, every geek is! read anything written by RMS and ESR, you can't read a fucking sentence without noticing how fucking biased they are.
what the fuck do you mean what's posted on slashdot carries weight??? don't anyone think on their own anymore? rather and let the fucking media bullshit you into thinking whatever the hell they want you to believe, go home think about everything that's wrong with the world. fcuk you people are adults for christ sakes, if you believe everything you read in the fucking newspaper than good for you! show how well you've been educated. if you can't think for yourself you deserve to be fucked up the ass.
This anti-bush shit has been around for months now on slashdot! listen to any episode of geeks in space. and frankly i agree, bush is just some rich white dickhead who got nominated not because he's the best person for the job but because he's george bush's kid and he has a better chance of winning.
people have to right to post their opinions no matter how much fucking weight it carries. Linus Tovald could put an anti-bush or anti-gore comment in the kernel code for all i fucking care! shit i don't care if they have a cable channel where they chant 'vote bush' 24 hours a day. make your own fuckign opinion!
and if you got a problem with the usage of fuck in this comment, FUCK YOU! it gets the fucking point across.
no the message is stop bitching because most of these people who are doing this isn't getting anything from unconstructive criticism. it's alright to speculate on the status of an open source project but if you're not a contributor you have no right to bitch. constructive criticism however is good for the project, better yet contribute bug reports.
shit i want to see the unification of physics but you don't see me flaming steven hawkings for not being able to deliver on the promise.

who's greed? Microsoft's for wanting to dominate the market or the register's for wanting to shock readers with controversial headlines?
