heh play any Quake 3 Team Deathmatch lately on an east coast Speakeasy server? if not, then you have yet to experience "elitists"

err, of course Counter-Strike is more elitist .. but the passwords for the servers required to experience it are harder to come by ...

  2. Actually this will be pretty cool... on G4: The Pong Channel? · · Score: 1

There is a rather large community of competitive gamers, mostly Quake3, Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament, and now Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Of course the koreans are heavily into Starcraft. A channel devoted to televising leagues and large LAN tournaments would help alleviate the limitations of GTV and HLTV, which are mostly related to bandwidth. Instead of having to limit viewers to the hundreds, obviously thousands would be able to view the matches. Last night over 200 people filled the available GTV slots to watch Clan Kapitol play Kung Fu Clan in the Resurrection2 Quake3 TDM finals.

I also haven't seen anyone mention that your very own "Wesley Crusher" is the host of one of the shows "The Arena".

  5. Re:QuakeTV on Spectator Gaming, Multicast Style · · Score: 1

Yes the "gtv" does take up a spot on the server.(gtv is what is generally used now for high profile games, i am unsure of its relationship to qtv, might just be a name change)

The gtv works as a proxy. The spectators connect to the gtv server, and view from its perspective. Think of 50 people looking over the shoulder of a person who is spectating the match. It doesnt use up any bandwidth on the server where the match is being played (other than the bandwidth being used by GTV, which isnt any more than a "regular" player).

During some high profile matches you will have upwards of 150 people tuning into to watch. Multiple GTV's can connect thus providing "mirrors" of the match around the country/world, and making it scalable.

The interesting thing is that this technology is almost a requirement for "pro" gaming. Without it, the game loses all spectator interest, other than those who download the match demos later.

With CS being used at the recent CPL event, it was essential that they had some kind of spectator friendly technology. So there must have been a push to develop this. However, the Quake community has enjoyed this for some time now.

The Half-life utility resembles a Q3test app called Argus. Which also gave you the overhead view. Looks like the people at Valve used Argus as inspiration.

Why pick on Loki games? Is that a fact based paranoia, or a personal vendetta?

What would Loki have to gain by getting into the average gamer/Linux users machine? and compare that with what Borland could gain by leaving a backdoor in it's product. Access to large corporate/organization databases, the support call from the frenzied admin who lost or forgot the admin password, etc...

Leaving a backdoor in Mechwarrior or Quake3 just doesn't make any sense...

closed source or not, nvidia still retains the higher quality product, in both speed and actual picture quality. their gl implementation is much more mature and it shows it. BTW their linux drivers are a sight to behold, just as fast as windows...

now if we could only get my intellieye to work as smoothly q3 linux as it does in windows ... i mean i cant sacrifice my rail for open source ... call me shallow .... but its just not an option.
