Actually, I'd think that a variable-width font would be more "secure" since then there'd be a question of how many letters there are. If you use a fixed width font, and you can tell exactly how many characters are present in the blacked out string, that makes the job a lot easier. If there's a variable number of characters, that'd have to be more difficult to crack.
Back in my day, we only had one continent, and we LIKED it! We hadn't evolved legs yet, and we had to slither everywhere we went, on a trail of our own mucuous, and it was uphill, both ways. There wasn't any fancy "erosion" like you modern day kids have to make things smooth on our underbellies, either.
The other thing I don't get is that most people who bitch about the NYT free registration have registered for slashdot IDs.
The only thing I can come up with that makes sense is that the NYT and/. have different policies about what they'll do with your information, such as sell your email to spammers or track your reading habits and send your name to the government if you start reading the wrong stuff.
And there's also the fact that/.'s registration isn't mandatory. I guess that makes enough of a difference. But really, it's not hard to give the NYT bogus information when you register.
Batteries keep your balls warm, but Plutonium not only keeps your balls warm, after a few generations you end up with extra balls. More balls the merrier, I say!
That's a neat idea, and it's been a long time since I read the EULA for Windows, but I'm pretty sure that Microsoft's EULA specifically prohibits the transfer of licenses to other hardware than that which it came bundled with.
Which, means that yes, technically we have to live with such stupidities as I can't give away my old PC with Windows installed on it to someone else when I buy a new PC, and if I want to decomission some outdated system and install my existing Windows license on new hardware, I can't.
It's a good thing the damn licensing agreements are unenforceable.
Actually, they foresaw this and came up with the idea to switch to Street Fighter II special moves. The release of 10.5 "Hadouken" and 10.6 "Sonic Boom" will bear me out on this, just wait and see.
Try a manual focus camera, if that's the case. The time it takes for the auto-focus to do its job adds a significant delay to the time between pressing the button and the shutter actually snapping.

Ah, but It will... It'll enable them to crop out a lot of a picture and compose around a section of the frame which would otherwise not be usable as a full-sized print. The nice thing about having a lot of extra pixels is you can throw out a whole lot of them and still have acceptable quality for your prints.
The US sponsors petty dictatorships in little countries all over the world.
The US response to 3000+ civilians killed on 9/11/01 was to kill many more than that number of civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq, along with "legitimate" military targets. Of course, anyone attacking "legitimate targets" in the US command structure would be illegal, but it's perfectly OK for the US to attack anything it perceives as a threat.
We're good, so it's OK for us to point guns at you, because we need to be safe and free. But you can't point guns back at us, because that's an illegitimate use of fear to advance your agenda, which is the definition of terrorism. When we "accidentally" kill civilians of other countries, it is "regrettable" but when other power kill our civilians, it's cause for retributive war. To my way of looking at things, the civilians are dead either way.
But for some reason it's OK for the US to wrongly kill people accidentally in the pursuit of justice and to secure freedom for "everyone". And it's OK for the US to dismantle the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms because they make controlling the government unsafe and make business unprofitable.
Buy a clue: you can't establish democracy by pointing guns at people and telling them they must govern themselves in such and such a way in order to become "free", and shooting some of them when they don't react the way you expect they should react.
All of this was precipitated on an extremist unilateral position, with US leadership proclaiming that you're either with us or against us. Rather than making anyone safer or bringing "justice" to the world, these actions have resulted in decreased global stabilization and many more recruits for all the terrorist organizations.
I am an American, a natural born citizen, and a student of liberty. I think the US's foreign policy stinks, and our use of unilateral force is totally hypocritical.
Nonsense! My freedom to kill people who live in different countries and speak languages I don't understand is essential! All this democracy stuff is a sham if we can't kill everyone else on the planet and take their stuff. Why do you hate America so much?
I told the scammer in question to quit abusing her TTY services or I would beat the living hell out of him, and he did. Got right up and walked out of the bar after dropping a $20 for the drinks he'd bought. I recommended to my gf that she consider re-evaluating how her protocols broadcast the availability of her TTYs on public networks, and suggested she wear a turtleneck next time we went out. It hasn't been a problem since.
Sometimes you need to know the right techniques to apply.
Considering how seldom the idiot^H^H^H^H^H^H users actually use the help function whre I work, it shouldn't be a problem. It seems they regard the IT Support "Help Desk" as their first place to look when they ought to be using the online Help function in that seemingly invisible menu at the right side of their window.
DO train the new hire... and encourage him to "press The Red Button" if he is ever in doubt about what to do. In most tech companies, this should result in the self-destruct mechanism being activated. That'll teach them.

In other words, the geek boycott of RIAA labels is failing. I don't really see this as good news.
Custom = one of a kind.
So: make many copies of the software. Now it is no longer "custom" code but mass produced.
Cost of making copies of the binary: zero.
Tax savings: Lots.
Nothing to see here, move along.
Man, forget about Duke Nukem Forever, that's old news.
I can't wait for the suquel, Duke Nukem Never... Literally!
I propose that the companies merge rather than compete against each other. Imagine how many people would line up to purchase a brand new Smegway.

Manslaughter... unless of course it's a UCITA state and the virus comes with its own little "You can't sue me no matter what" EULA.

I am an American, a natural born citizen, and a student of liberty. I think the US's foreign policy stinks, and our use of unilateral force is totally hypocritical.
So, let's just be clear on this:
When America holds the world hostage with 20,000 nuclear warheads, that's "protecting freedom".
When some guy straps explosives to himself, and does the same thing on a smaller scale, that's "terrorism".
So legitimacy is all about how big and powerful you are? Nice...

I'd kill for $20 an hour
That sounds like a bargain to me. Where can I fax the list of people I want killed?
1/3 is getting worse? I thought 50% or more of all email was spam. I'd think getting it down to 1/3 would be a vast improvement.
Or rather, my girlfriend.

I've been playing Metroid for more than half of my life.
I knew it was a long game, but damn! Maybe you should buy an old NES Advantage off of eBay so you can use rapid fire...
I hope they get The Minibosses to do a few songs for the soundtrack. It would only be right.
When are they going to do Zero Wing: The Movie?
