i was reading an article recently about a factory in india that had two sets of sewing machines for the workers: one of electric machines, and one of foot-pedal-powered machines. when the power went out (not if), they would get up and switch to the manual power set to keep making the clothes until the power came back on.
i dunno about you, but it's probably pretty hard to run a 24/7 internet startup server in india when the power goes out and infrastructure is poor.
Granholm added: "In the future, any hacking, regardless of the amount of financial damage it causes, will be a felony. A vandal is a vandal whether you are a virtual vandal putting graffiti on a web site or a real world vandal putting graffiti on a wall. Both are illegal.
Uhh, I'm not sure, but is putting graffiti on a wall a felony offense? I would think something that minor would be a misdemeanor or something. If writing graffiti in rl is not a felony offense, then they seriously need to rethink their comparison, because it's flawed.
hey, i think that making people with poor grammar skills and spelling suffer is a great idea. it'd be 'the internet's spell-checker', and would force people to learn the language that they are attempting to communicate in. i for one think that would be a Good Thing(Tm). grammar nazi will back me up on this.:) (have you ever tried to read some internet sites, like some of slashdot's posters' posts or things like www.techcomedy.com? it's amazing that some people are qualified as literate.) (i just know this post will be ripped apart by people for spelling and grammar, heh.)
unless, as was mentioned earlier, the results of searching were customized per user; results stored in a cookie or something similar. then you could tweak the search engine for you personally, and some unscrupulous company attempting to manipulate the system in that manner would be wasting their time.
yeah, great. takes karma whoring and poor moderation to a whole new level... now instead of it being limited to just slashdot, we can have the entire web that way...
heh. no need to be sarcastic about it... it's just that based on past (or even better, current) history/events, a certain cynicism has developed as to their (corporations') goodwill towards consumers. we're not people, we're just units to be squeezed for dough.
this breaks down in the thinking that the corporations will allow your 'personalized maximum price per good' to fall below that "old" general-market minimum. your_max will always be > old_min because they are greedy. therefore, such a strategy does not 'benefit the consumer'. (en general.)
because of this, the situation only benefits one party (the sellers). because of that, consumers have no compelling reason to support or accept it.
sure thing, job 13...

napster-corp provides napster-service via napster-program and napster-servers to users.
mp3-d00d provides mp3-service via ftp-program and ftp-server to users.
same same.
and, since corporations are legally considered entities, and individuals are considered entities, i'd say we have a match.

add two vcr's or record to vcr from the dvd player and you've got copyright infringement (remember the fbi warning at the beginning of the movie?)...
also, suck free cable from a neighbor's feed or something to your tv and that's another crime...
