Why is it that nobody seems to consider bursting / short-term throttling? It seems more logical to me to run a simple IPchains-like setup per address that kicks down after so much bandwidth being used in a period of time. Just not in the way mentioned by others here.

Example: I'm downloading a 650 Meg file. The first minute I'm really cranking speed, but after that it kicks down because I've exceeded my burst rate. This would have let me load a web page in no time, but keeps me from sucking bandwidth. This also doesn't nail me in the fourth week of the month for getting a new distro in the first week. Bandwidth is not per month, it's per second. Overall usage really shouldn't matter (who cares what I do at 2 AM? I'm the only loony on!), it's the bitrate. Want it faster, pay more.

When you buy a line, you should own that bitrate at every second for no extra cost. Bursting ought to be something you can buy above that. And the smart provider would include that in the default plan to make their customers really happy. I just can't stand this per month thing...

You just described current DNS, but you forgot to mention how the ISP is supposed to have their entry. From their ISP perhaps? And what about them? Eventually, you have a TLD. It's possible to have a .quest .verizon .uunet etc, but that's the same as .com .org .net . And we have a term for when a root server points to another root domain: peering. Already happens as well. Try again, amis.

  18. Re:Is DNS showing its age? on ICANN Wants $35,000 From Dot-org Wannabes · · Score: 3, Informative
Yup, the logic sure is the same.

In the current DNS system, after I request a lookup for a domain name, the server that gave it to me caches it. Every machine that asks that server again before the time out period gets the cached answer. This both keeps loads on the central system down, and allows the owner to specificy how often an update will take at max.

Next, if anyone can register, and the system is distributed so that it can't be controlled, how do you propose that names are removed? Interesting idea, dumb plan.

Yeah, and how do you control registration? What if somebody registered a domain that wasn't theirs? DNS is by nature hierarchial, and it should stay that way. As far as loads go, that's why you query your ISPs DNS, not the root servers. And if you disagree with it, start another set of root servers (don't I wish that were as easy as it appeared typed here).

I got that memo, and it's in my .sig (which I intend to change as soon as I'm done posting this). The reasoning behind it as best I could gather was that some of us were rather inflamed at the comment on how our comments were of little signifigance. And I suppose I just wanted to be part of something that might bring about a noticable ... well, not change, but something. But the number of comments stayed steady, and I realized that there wouldn't be a chance of me sticking around this site if not for the comments, both those I read and when I get to throw in my two cents. So for all the hope in The (Hopefully) Great Slashdot Blackout, there wasn't much substance.

The sum of it is that the comments are the meat of the stories, and if you're interested in a story, you're going to look to the comments. Since people didn't stop posting, I'm not having much luck at holding back from reading. And so now I'm posting as well since it'd be damned stupid to hold out trying to prove some point that I'm not really sure of. But I guarantee, if the comments faded, I wouldn't have had much a problem staying off the front page as well :)
