Yeh, a few weeks ago, I sat down at a friends new computer, and noticed they had OOo (on win), installed. When I said "oh wow, thats cool...", they just looked at me strange.

They hadn't even realised it wasn't M$ Office. They said they had noticed it was different "but so is eveything else on my new computer".

They brought this particular setup because "it was the cheapest, from a reliable store".

"I wonder how long it will be before those detailed logs ARE required by law?"

An interesting point occurs to me. One of the great things about the many 'anti-hacking' laws passed around the world is that most (if not all), have little (if any), requirement for systems operators to take reasonable steps to keep their systems secure.

So if I open up a Wi-Fi shop, and keep detailed logs, of all my paying users, but don't bother to secure the setup?????

'Yes officer, you can have the logs of my customers. Unfortunitly it dosen't cover the several thousand p2p users, who have creaked my system, and you want..... Yes thats correct, removing the howto from the MOTD would reduce this, but I'm under no requirement to do that.' :-)

A extended version I'd like an answer to.

In the software industry its common practice to drop support for a piece of software after a given time. Often this results in the consumer being left with a perfectly functional product, that will not run on modern hardware / operating systems. What are the legalities surrounding the creation of, and use of a 'hacked' version that will run on modern systems.?
If its a 'depends' answer, what factors influence this type of situation.

    a) A kid plays a video game, where they 'shoot people' over and over, until they think 'hay why not try this for real', and shoot up their school.

    or,

    b) A kid is forced, day after day, to go to a instituation where they are mentally, physically, and even sexually abused, where the 'responsible adults' do nothing, and even encourges it. Until the kid figures 'hay, my lifes hell anyway, why not take some of 'em with me'.

    Backups always!

As for postage, I've never had to post h/w to/from the states so I don't know. However here in NZ, I've never had serious issues. In fact I get exceptional service from the courier service run by NZ Post.

I'm pretty hard on HDDs (well h/w in general). I use a these polystyrene cut-outs sold by a local stationary place. They fit snug, and with a bit of duct tape are relatively secure.

As for dropping h/w from hights, thats just fun. FYI: Novatel phones stop bouncing, at six stories. :-)
